Byrne's enemies have filled his Wiki entry with lies. You are not allowed to quote anything from Wikipedia on his board.

Many of those quotes are directly atrributed, though, often to Byrne's own board.

And having seen some of the shit he's come up with on that board over the years I feel fairly confident in saying that he's a deranged, embittered old hack - the worst kind of fanboy made even worse by the fact that (an ever decreasing number of) people still look to him as some kind of authority.

I mean, he's the guy who goes mental whenever someone refers to Batman as 'Bats' because they're not 'respecting the character', as though these are real people who've expressed actual opinions about these things. He's just pathetic and I don't know why this riles me up so much.

QuoteAnd it's not clear from that story that Barda did anything porny, though that's what the villain was trying to make her do. He is a grumpy old sod though.

No, it's pretty clear: Superman and Mister Miracle receive a videotape that they watch, recoiling in horror as Big Barda does... something. Then in the next issue Sleez (ooh, clever name) is mind-controlling her into trying to fuck Superman. It's creepy and weird.

Yes, the story is still creepy and weird, and at odds with Byrne's current clamouring that comics should be more all-ages - something I agree with him about - and I do often find him cranky, hypocritical and unable to take criticism or discuss things calmly or sensibly.

But I would say that Wiki piece is unfair as it takes every 'bad' thing they can find he ever said, and put it in, without context or balance. Worse (false) things have been put in and removed, I don't know how much of what is currently there is a real quote or fact, but it's now just part of a hate campaign, and not a reliable Wiki entry (yes, a slight oxymoron there), is all I'm saying.

Well I think he was using 'working classes' as shorthand for 'lower classes'. It was said with some humour, but the point was there: you don't see Batman fucking up Nike for exploiting third world sweatshops or bringing down brokers for doing dodgy trading.[nb]Yeah, because that wouldn't be fun to read about. But still/[/nb]

To be fair though, his most famous enemies like Penguin, Joker, Riddler, etc. seem to be rolling in enough money to have henchmen and elaborate secret lairs. Also, the idea that The Dark Knight is right-wing is shot down instantly because of the one scene where he has a choice of blowing up a boat full of murderers and rapists, and a boat full of innocents. A right winger wouldn't even think twice about blowing up the former.

Mister Six

Well The Joker's a bit of an odd example because he's human only in species - his drives and interests are completely alien. But The Riddler is a former carnival worker who has pretensions towards being smarter than Batman (the self-appointed king of Gotham blah blah blah) and rarely seems to have a lot of money (although that's changed in the comics as he's now gone legit as a celebrity detective), and The Penguin (as pointed out in the article you pooh-poohed) is a working-class schlub who wants to be an upper-class billionaire like Wayne and much humour comes from him being rejected by Gotham's high society.

And Batman wasn't given the choice to kill the prisoners - it was down to the people on the two boats whether they'd kill each other. In any case 'right-wing' doesn't immediately equate to 'fucking psychopath'. I imagine loads would refuse to blow up the prisoner's boat on moral grounds, others on legal grounds and most on the grounds that they don't want to kill a bunch of security guards/prison personnel/sailors.

It's impossible really to make a sweeping overview as there have been so many different takes on *all* of the characters in the Batman universe over the past 72 years.

VegaLA

I knew someone was going to make a stink of this eventually.

To be honest I think the role of Supes shopuld be given to an American Actor, i'd hate to see an American cast as Bond or a female cast as The Doctor.
Spoiler alert
There I said it!

Batman and Spiderman are fair game though.

Nah - give it to the best man for the job so long as he can get the accent right. I wouldn't mind an American as The Doctor so long as he wasn't speaking with a Texan drawl or something.

Jemble Fred

I'm surprised that article didn't lay the blame at Hugh Laurie's door...

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Why have they included Thor and Wolverine in that story?

Dead kate moss

They've used American actors for Sherlock Holmes, John Constantine, Robin Hood, Tarzan... so fuck 'em.

It wouldn't really make much sense, no. Nor does him speaking American, or being naturally King Of The Jungle because he's white while the native Africans are shit at wrestling alligators and vine-swinging. It's funnier if it's because he's English though.

John Constantine

Gah, every time I manage to forget.

I'd fucking kill for a decent UK Hellblazer TV show.

All Nordic gods and Canadians should be played by professionals (Americans).

I think Claude was referencing the fact that Thor is supposed to be a Norse god and that the character Wolverine is Canadian.

Amy Adams is playing Lois Lane. That's definitely peaked my interest somewhat.

Quite an unusual approach to have the biggest name[nb]Yes, I know Costner is his dad, but ol' Kev's hardly a hot property at the moment[/nb] on the cast be Lois Lane.

Jemble Fred

I had to google Amy Adams, but I know Henry Cavill.

You don't know Amy Adams? Watch Junebug now!

Nik Drou

It's probably not worth starting a whole new thread just yet, as the movie isn't released for another two years.  In the now-tradition of releasing these kind of images far too early, kindly cop a load:

Despite the bouffant hair and weird, scaly quality to the uniform, I rather like it.  It feels evocative of the more recent Superman comics and, for all his fairly fundamental flaws, Zack Snyder knows how to light and frame a scene.  Or at least, he knows a good cinematographer.

For context, here's the similarly premature promo of Brandon Routh in the suit:

Ginyard

Look at the size of his 'S' (new guy, not BR). If he were clapping at a wholesome barn dance, I can't help but think that the sharp edges of it would cause the top of his pecs some discomfort. Plus he looks less like a man of steel and more like a tiny evil stockbroker trapped inside a radioactive can of coke.

Sivead

Whats with the fish scales/honeycomb on superheroes costumes these days? The S looks like it's made of the sharp rough side of velcro.

The Roofdog

Yeah I really don't like the scales. Seems to be an easy way to say "this definitely isn't lycra"

Tiny Poster

Superman with a mean face and a widow's peak? I don't know. Also, are they doing away with the red grundies?

El Unicornio, mang

Any thoughts on the costume without the underpants? Personally I prefer it

Not sure what to make of the recent pics of him with a beard though...

Dead kate moss

The changes to the suit are awesome. Wait, I mean horrible. This is how the suit should look
