1918-39 was dominated by Tory governments, so I expect we did.

There's this great book I discovered in St Andrews Library, called "I know these dictators" by some Tory peer(1938). He describes his meetings with Hitler and Mussolini, calling them "wonderful people" and nothing to be afraid of. Hitler was just misunderstood in Britain, he was a "kind and gentle" man. Hitler ment well for the people of Britain and for the people of Czechslovakia, after all he was a war veteran and didn't want another war.

Then there's the chapter about apperances. Mussolini has a "spiffing new uniform" when he greets the author. He also talks about how stately Hitler looks since he put on weight.

Most fucked up book ever.


But Hitler's main appeal was to the bourgeosis, the middle classes, and most especially the old craftworking and shopkeeping classes who were prejudiced by industrial development. We can see that his working class vote was relatively small, as they were split between the SPD and the KPD, with little shift in votes between 1928 and 1933. Hitler was petty bourgeois and his working policies appealed to those who had lost the most from industrialisation and the depression; often at the hands of 'jewish' banks, 'jewish'  department stores and 'jewish' heavy industry.

This is my cue to plug The Tin Drum by Günter Grass. Please read it if you want a heart-stoppingly powerful description of the rise of the Nazis, as seen by a very strange boy, who like many Germans, refused to grow up and see what was going on around him. It is truely one of the greatest books of the century.

Grass himself has had a quite a life, and much of the Tin Drum must be based on his experiences. He actually served in the German Army (aged about 16) at the end of WW2 and was captured by the Americans. He wrote much of the Tin Drum in a boilier room while working as a caretaker in some building in Germany.

It gives me an excuse to mention how angry I got when I saw the 'William Morris' public House in Hammersmith at the weekend. I'm sure the lifelong socialist and generally groovy guy, would be really pleased to have one  of the very worst Wetherspoon pubs in existence named after him.
