Details are scarce but i'm well up for a new Resident Evil game. Not played one since Code Veronica on the PS2 and secretly hoped they would release the first three games in HD for the 360 like they did the gamecube but no such luck. I can only hope this title makes up for that.

I never did complete Code Veronica so maybe this time.

Do yourself a huge favour and pick up Resi 4 second-hand.

Do yourself an even bigger favour and avoid Resi 5.

Spiteface

I loved Resi 1, for some reason didn't bother with 2 or 3, and never got far enough into Code Veronica.

RE4 would have been perfect without the escorting of president's annoying daughter stuff, and RE5, while not as bad as some of you here seem to be suggesting, would have been better either without Co-op, or if the partner was invincible like Tails in Sonic 2.  I think that's why I enjoy single player Mercenaries on RE5 so much more.

Talking of RE5, and I don't really want to be starting a new thread for this, does the DLC stuff now only work if my XBox is connected online?  before my old XBox 360 broke the "Lost in Nightmares", "Deperate Escape" and "Mercenaries reunion"  things disappeared, although they were still on my Hard drive.  Then a few weeks ago, I got a new XBox, transferred my old files over, and went online (which I rarely do) with it, to update shit, and it was back, then later on, when I wasn't online, it was gone again.  I'm confused.

This new one seems interesting, but I want to see more of it before I make my mind up.

Was hoping the XBLA version of Code Veronica was a remake in the style of RE4/5, looks like it's just been given an HD polish. Never mind...

Little Hoover

One of the things that's impressive about Resi 4, is that it has the least annoying escort missions ever produced in a game, Ashley ducks out of the way of bullets, she doesn't just wander off by herself. There's moments where you wish she wasn't around but they're so few and far between.

Resi 5 is fine really, it's just they added the annoying co-op and inventory system and took out the exciting set pieces and gave up trying to create atmosphere, but the core game mechanics were so solid that even  with Capcom fucking up as much as they did, it's still a pretty decent game.

Famous Mortimer

And, as an unlockable in RE4, there's a suit of armour for Ashley that renders her completely indestructible, which is good fun. And the unlimited-bullets tommy gun for Leon...it's the most rewarding multi-complete experience I can think of, as it's just so much fun to play.

Yeah as far as wacky alternate costumes go, there's something about the Chicago Gangster/Girl in a noisy suit of Armour combo that just really seems to work.

I mean

Resident Evil 4 - Chapter 3 - 1 "No Damage" (Gangster Style) Part 2/2

They even bothered to make it hurt Leon when he catches Ashley wearing the amour.

You need to transfer your licences across to the new Xbox: http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Support/LicenseMigration/Home

It'd be pretty decent (if forgettable and overlong) without the RE licence. With it, it seems like an enormous retrograde step.

They also strangled it with bullshit old continuity after giving the impression with Resi 4 that they were starting afresh.

Little Hoover

I seem to remember Resi 5 was quite a bit shorter than 4. Agreed about the rubbish continuity though, the fresh campy storyline of 4 was another reason it was a lot better.

madhair60

I first played Resi 4 about a year ago and it blew me away.  Resi 5 isn't bad to play (and looks amazing on a high-spec PC) but it doesn't compare to the consistent brilliance of 4.

Also, isn't 4 coming out on the XBLA soon?

Surely all the hope in world isn't going to make up for the abscence of the most decent survial horror games with a squad based shooter in it's stead.

True dat! I just hope the new game can reproduce some of the magic I felt the first time I switched off the lights and booted up Resi 1 on the playstation. I didn't get that with Veronica.

I still consider RE4 to be the best game I've ever played, so obviously I is well made up with this news. It was actually the game that got me back into gaming, after a 6 year break. Loved everything about it, and the atmosphere was amazing. I still don't think anyone has come even close to topping the feeling of inner dread and fear i got from that world, everything about it just cut me to the bone.

RE5 I only got round to recently, and had a quick run through with my mate online, and enjoyed most of it. The main problem i felt was how short it was. 9 hours of out n out action, sure, but then it just.... well.... stops. Very anticlimatic, and the end boss was rubs. Had none of the atmosphere of previous games, which was a major minus, also. Can't say I had any urge to replay the game in single player either, which isn't a good sign. I've just sold it on eBays, actually.

Anyway, yes, bring back on RE4 plz you Capcom fellas x

Same on both points, although it hadn't been six years for me.  Gaming had turned into getting the new GTA and not bothering with anything in the meantime, though.  Desres 4 was an absolute revelation, because it was fun, and it was designed so beautifully.  It actually allows you to improve at the game, which is something that has really been lost in recent years.  That initial assault in the villiage is as scary as all hell when you first play it, but as you improve it becomes a cakewalk.  Much as I love something like Read Dead Redemption, the 'hard' missions don't get any easier on subsequent shots, because there's nothing to learn.  You get lucky or you don't.

I feel Resi 5 was my fault in a way, because my honest answer to what I'd have wanted as a sequel would have been 'more of the same'.  That's exactly what they gave us, unfortunately.  It's not just that the structure of it is wonky, or that it never hits the heights that 4 did, it's that it misunderstands what made 4 so great.  So it just resprays it and hopes that'll do.  My heart sank when I first saw those guys with shields show up, at which point I realised that Capcom thought I wanted Galaxians with updated sprites.  It really fell through the floor when yer bloke with the minigun and cigar cropped up.

Completely pointless rattling, there.  Back to the subject of the new thing:

Awww, team-based? Is it too much to ask that they make games that people can do on their own?

Judging from that video, it doesn't look a lot like the other games in the series, but more like any other squad shooter.

Dear Capcom: please do HD remakes of the old games, I'd buy that shit in a second.

Apparently it is.  I'd kill for a game like Left 4 Dead that doesn't require worrying about 3 other teammates, computer or human-controlled.

I second this.  At least make the Gamecube remake of RE1 available on XBLA and similar.

Famous Mortimer

It's been tons of fun playing the new Deus Ex and not having to mess about with online modes, and teams, and just do the shit you want. I don't know how successful it's been, but there must be a market for games like this, especially ones with a long and glorious history of single-player mayhem.

You're absolutely right about making the new version of RE1 available via XBLA.

Famous Mortimer

I just noticed yesterday (apologies if this is common knowledge) that RE 4 is available from the XBox online shop, for £14.99. If I'd not played it to death before (unlocked every single damn thing) I'd probably pick it up again.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Resi 4 is like the godfather of pretty much all third-person shooters of this generation and still stands up compared to them, but on the other hand fifteen quid seems awfully steep.

VegaLA

Did anybody get Resi 4 for the 360?
I see they released 'Codename Veronica' yesterday and took a look at the screenshots. They did not look very High Def. How does 4 look, any good?

VegaLA

In case anyone else is interested, the Demo of this should be available early next year. New trailer in link too.

I've played and loved all the RE games up to 4. This just looks like a hectic, macho mess that completely misses the point.

Completely agree. Is this Resi 6 or some side-offering? Whatever, it looks quite ghastly. I've become quite blind to RE development since I bought an Xbox just for RE5 and it looks like a wise move.

Moving topic sideways, I'm now sensibly on the Wii and recently bought Zero in a fit of optimistic nostalgia after playing 4 to death, and really had forgotten how agonisingly long it can take to just open a freakin' door. And only go near a staircase if you've a weekend to spare.

Still, they was great back in the day.

Consignia

Zero isn't too bad in the action steaks is it? It was produced in the wake of the faster paced Code Veronica, and was nibler than 1 and 2 at least. You don't have to press an action button to go up stairs in it as far as I recall.

Mildly Diverting

Yes, I exaggerate, although obviously speed-wise its a little slower than we are used to. I've hardly got into it yet, but I'd quite forgotten how gorgeous the pre-rendered backgrounds are. Them was the days. Proper RE, back in the day when you didn't need to be told when you'd made a head shot.
