Northern Soul In Its Many Hues

I really don't mean to de-rail the thread, but listening to an old DJ Andy Smith mix from way back in 2005, '60's Northern Soul 45's',
I was stumped by this song.

I don't know that it's strictly a Northern Soul track, and I am (reasonably) sure it's James Brown, but I can't identify it.
It has shades of Aretha Franklin 'Rock Steady' to it, I'm hoping someone here might recognise it; any help would be greatly appreciated.

That aside, I really hope this thread keeps going as it's turned up some absolute gems.

Here's a single from the Belfast band The Bats, which was played in some Northern Soul clubs despite (again) probably never having been released or written with such credibility in mind.  The Bats specialised in gentle, whimsical sixties pop usually, but behind the tight harmonies here lies a pounding little number:

An absolute corker, and the B-side "Stop Don't Do It" isn't bad either.  I'll probably be blogging about these chaps next week.

Can't help you place that track Miles - sorry, I did try.

Yes, I meant to say that I couldn't trace it, either.  Not too sure it's particularly "Nothern" (though who knows?) but it's a good track - but certainly not one I've heard before, and I did try to google more details using guesswork and didn't get far.

Aye, it's not really a Northern Soul sound,
it's only because it was from a sixties soul 45's and NS mix that I thought I'd ask in here rather than start a new thread.

Thanks all the same chaps,

May I thank you all eternally for all the delights posted in this thread and for giving me some understanding of what Northern Soul actually is.

I'm not sure this song qualifies, but it is a stonker. I heard it close an excellent funk and soul night in Edinburgh, and had to ask what song it was - I imagine some of the aficionados here will already know it well.

Personal favourite of mine from Northern stalwart Jimmy Radcliffe, great DJ set-opener:

Which one? Always up for a boogie me.

I too would be interested in this information.

Edinburgh Northern Soul Night Mini-Meet?

I've got the talcum powder if you've got the time, boys.

Yes, I'd deffo be up for this, I'll bring me bowling bag and a change of Oxford Bags.

Sweet.  If Blinder Data chips in with the Data on the night itself, then could get on the good foot launch a thread in GB to see if anyone else is up for some soul gliding and/or gymnastic floor dives.

(Though I think maybe the Wee Red Bar at the Art School sometimes does Northern Soul nights, so could investigate that - cheap booze there, too).

The night was Four Corners at the Bongo Club, a funk/soul/jazz/Latin/Afro/reggae club night. I've been twice, and from what I dimly remember they were both brilliant evenings. It's on every four weeks, the next one occurring Friday 23 September. Most nights at the Bongo are a good laugh though, it's the club with the best music in Edinburgh for my money.

I think I've seen the flyer for that Wee Red Bar night, it did intrigue me.

I may be up for a mini-meet, although it would be the first one I have attended, and I suppose I am a bit of a lurker here.

CaledonianGonzo

Oh right - I know Four Corners.  Fairly sure I've been myself.

Funnily enough, over lunchtime I've been doing a bit of online detective work into the Scottish Northern Soul scene and there are things coming up like a Weekender at the Minto Hotel at the beginning of October and regular Sunday afternoon session in places like the Hibs Supporter's club just off of Easter Road.  Might be a bit niche, though, I dunno.  I mean, do they let you even walk through the doors of these places without a feather cut and Harrington jacket?

But I'm good with a wee jaunt to The Bongo.  Funnily enough, just 20 yards or so from the the site of the last Edinburgh get together.  Next Friday might be a bit soon, mind.  Late October?

Excellent, the Bongo, a regular and favourite haunt - this sounds like a plan.  Would concur with CG though, might be worth giving it a month to give us some time to plan and spread the word.  Also I need to work out where all the best chemist shops are on the way[nb]Only joking officer! Or am i?[/nb] ;)[nb]yes, I am joking.  Just in case you're watching[/nb]

CaledonianGonzo

Top hole. I'll see about raising awareness in the more mainstream avenues of the forum.
