Fantastic stuff! Thanks for your help guys!

KLG-7B

I was just about to turn up in this thread to post this track and say "doesn't this sound like it ripped off The Cardiacs?".

Wikipedia saved me, but I'd still like to register my idiocy.

A rather sweet cover version of one of their most gentle songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVghdYrSchw

Anyone fans here of Tom Waits/Cardiacs influenced, Norwegians, Major Parkinson?

Yes, just discovered Major Parkinson why only the other day and yes they're bloody brilliant (I've only listened to their latest album so far...).

I wouldn't usually do this on the internet, but what the heck:

:o))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Brundle-Fly

That's great. Thank you. And Tim all normal and in civvies. Weird. I wonder how he's doing these days?

Finally heard some Cardiac Arrest era tracks last week. Punky.

David Minnick has done another of his rather splendid acapella Cardiacs covers, Fiery Gun Hand this time, his best yet I reckon.

Complete with laudation from Tim himself if you check out the comments.

3 brilliant bits of video from from the Frozenland Festival in Holland in 1998 have shown up on YouTube.  Here's A Horse's Tail - and watch out for the lovely look to camera at 1:35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94YIVzxlzK0

Spinney & The Duck & Roger The Horse are also there.

In other news, I got the crowdfunded second Goddamn Whores album through the post yesterday. It's brill - and it's marvellous at long last to have the words to 'Silvery' (now retitled 'Sparkly Silver Sky')!

I love that footage from Tim's birthday party. It confirms what I had always suspected about the 'Cardiacs family', namely that they're all really close friends and will go to considerable lengths to make eachother happy, with music taking a central role. It's beautiful to see, especially the look on Tim's face when he returns home and sees all his chums there.

Anyway, I hope I'm allowed to say here: there's a very tenuously related gig happening soon (this is likely to interest only Londoners and those who like driving long distances). I once went to see the fantastic (and reverently Cardiacs-influenced) band, Little Trophy, in Brighton, and there met former Cardiacs guitarist Jon Poole. He was apparently a regular at their gigs, describing the experience of watching them as being akin to "having flashbacks to [his] Cardiacs days". I can also confirm that he was every bit as welcoming and good-natured as none of the tales about him suggest. Here's the link: Little Trophy disbanded and two of their number reconvened in the equally exciting and inventive Ham Legion...

(Removed)

Sorry if this wasn't the right place to plug this, but I feel the Cardiacs/Morris crowd are my kind of people, so I hope you don't mind.

Neville Chamberlain

Heard great things about this gig - sorry I couldn't have been there.

Dirty Boy

Sorry for bumping this bloody thing and shitting you all up (again!)

Some fairly interesting stuff Kavus said on another forum recently

Quote from: 'Kavus'We did have a very expensive 8 camera crew with crane for the Astoria show in (I think) 2005. Tim was going to leave the editing to the company involved, but when we watched a rough of the first song (Home Of Fadeless Splendour) he decided (rightly) that he should edit the thing himself. At the time of his accident he had not yet mixed the soundtrack, let alone edited the film. A shame because the actual shots looked magnificent and the backstage footage was amazing. Subsequently this is shelved at the moment. Much closer to completion and 90% edited and completely mixed was the Garage rehearsal film, two tunes of which are on YouTube. I watched what there is of that again with Tim recently but as far as I know he has no plans to get it out there as yet.

Was wondering where that filmed Astoria thing had gone :-(

Oh, and there will be a LOTSS Songbook 2 apparantly :-)

Phil A's just reminded me of something that we think Nev is especially going to like...Napalm Death[nb]The ND/Cardiacs link is of course well-established, with both sharing a manager in the early-90s and recording their live vids on the same day[/nb] are recording a cover of 'To Go Off And Things' for a forthcoming split release with Melvins.

Norton Canes

Not much to add, except that Marc Riley played Is This The Life? on 6Music yesterday, which I remember 'cause the video was on The Tube. It's good.

Haha, blimey - I shall keep my eyes and ears peeled for that one - thanks, Boki!

Yes, a certain corner of Facebook is currently quite-a-buzz with friendly warmth.

Neville Chamberlain

Really great to see, this is!

Brundle-Fly

That's nice to see Tim's dipping his toe back into the world.

Slightly off topic, I was listening to an old Wizards Of Twiddly album recently and forgot how much they're like the Cardiacs. Went to see them play live at the George Robey, Finsbury Park in 1993, purely on the strength of their silly name spotted in the Time Out gig section. Brilliant gig

Ah yes, Wizards of Twiddly are a fine band - saw them playing live at the Tim Smith fundraiser at the Fighting Cocks a couple of years ago!

Tim Smith posted this on Facebook today:

QuoteHello Kidz! (You will notice that I spelled the word kidz with a 'z'). I have been bowled over and knocked back by the outpourings of love, posted on here. Every one of them. You have no idea what this means. Really though. While I would love to respond to each message, you are doubtlessly aware, my body is my enemy and my hands are cunts. Nonetheless it means the world to me, thank you all so much. I am truly blessed.

Snobbish Puerile Wanker

Now we'd better pray to god he doesn't discover FarmVille.

Snobbish Puerile Wanker

Turns out that to the list of vaguely famous-ish Cardiacs fans we can now add anachronistic cock-rock ponce Justin Hawkins.

Can't say I'm exactly overjoyed about that, but hey, the more people who know about this band, the better.

Dirty Boy

This all sounds jolly exciting

QuoteAn extravaganza of music, art and film to celebrate legendary cult musician and writer Tim Smith of Cardiacs. Lake of Puppies and Scaramanga 6 perform. Sarah Cutts (ex-Cardiacs saxophonist) exhibits her art. Official merchandise will be sold and there will be a rare screening of rehearsal films. All followed by a Cardiacs disco. A must-go for all Cardiacs fans!

Can't make it myself. Anyone else going?

Fantastic, I'll try.  Of course Tim is the main deal here but try and see The Scaramanga Six, currently in a 2 drum configuration and their last album, recorded by Albini in Chicago, is superb.

The Cambridge Footlights show 'Canada' now playing at the Edinburgh Fringe contains a couple of nods to Cardiacs. There's a random mention of Tim Smith in the 'audience participation sheet', plus the show uses 'Odd Even' as its closing music.

gloria

Cardiacs shop now open again at http://www.cardiacs.net/ (note the .NET and not .COM) with CDs, vinyl and merch, plus a wee update about Tim.

I've only got the Big Ship EP and A Little Man and a House.... love them both, but where should I go next?
