Fixing a YLOD on your PS3

Depressed Beyond Tables

A Simon Munnery DVD hammered the final nail into the coffin of my PS3 on Sunday. I was left with the infamous 'yellow light of death'.

Buy a new one: 300 quid.
Repairs by Sony: around 150 quid plus post (could be an issue with their storage in certain areas).
Get some bloke to fix it in your area and give you a 6 month warranty: probably about 80 quid upwards.

Good news is you can fix it yourself for around 50 quid. Don't waste your time with hair dryers despite what you read. Buy a Heatgun in Homebase, and a tube of thermal adhesive (preferably high in silver - Arctic 5 etc.) in Maplins, a Torx screwdriver (size T10) and some isopropyl alcohol.

Keep your screws in separate bowls, and in order of dismantling to avoid confusion, and give yourself a lot of clear workspace.

If your PS3 is over 2 years old or is used a lot you might want the prevention:

Different generations of PS3s do vary in their construction but once you complete it once, carefully, it's very easy to do again. A friend of mine does have one of the original generation consoles and his is still going strong. My 40gig lasted 3 and a half years of moderate use before the ylod.

I was thinking about doing it myself when mine died but decided I wasn't brave enough. There's a repair store here that did it for 70 quid and gave a 1 year warranty on it so I went for that and its still going strong.
I wouldn't mind a new PS3 though simply because they're much faster at loading.
