70. Styrofoam and Sarah Shannon - I Found Love

The original was so beautiful too. This is an atrocious mess.

I've just added The Free Design to the Best Covers thread to make up for that.

That's implying the original was ever any good.  It was fucking shite to begin with.  I don't know where that myth of the song being good ever came from.

Baby One More Time is a stormer of a pop song. It satisfies the exact audience it's aiming for. Like The Boston Crab, I also really dislike the Travis cover, which is hideously smug in a really unmerited way, as if their output has been some kind of cultural blessing to society.

I might add The 59th Street Bridge Song to that same thread. They did some great covers.

I have no love for the Britney version, but as a piece of writing, it's fine. But the lyric does ring more true somehow if it's sung by a man, rather than a teenage girl.

Brian Molko's singing voice is unbearable, regardless of the pseudo-NIN backing track.

There should be some kind of rule that guitar bands should never try and cover dance/pop songs, and dance/pop groups should NEVER try and do rock songs.  Especially if that is the end result.

While I'm here:

62. Annie Lennox - Shining Light

The only Westlife song I own. But Richard Curtis made me, dammit. (Though I drew the line at whatever that unbelievably shite boyband was called this year.)

I bet when Neil Young heard this he committed suicide just so he could turn over in his grave.

59. Simply Red - Mellow My Mind

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UUH8avj6hs

More bad news for Radiohead.

58. Jamie Cullum - High and Dry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHG89PMXClA

This must have been a single if it has a video. Though the video looks very American, so maybe it was their attempt to launch him stateside. I'd prefer if they launched him into the sun, eh lads?

57. Girls Aloud - Teenage Dirtbag - Dire song gets bile inducing make-over

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7lq_EAJ6uE

56. Rolf Harris - I Touch Myself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8Yxmz-csB4

I really have nothing to add.

55. Divine Comedy - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

In theory this could've been amazing, but the entire band sound like they just cannot be arsed. The arrangement is dull, Hannon's vocal is totally disinterested and the whole thing drags like a sulky child being forced to go shopping with it's mum. It's almost as bad as hearing Morrissey trudge his way through old Smiths songs these days.

54. Gene Simmons - Firestarter

Fuck off you utter moron.

53. Jimmy Eat World - Firestarter

Fuck off you wannabe Deftones arseholes.

52. Muse - House Of The Rising Sun

Fuck off you warbling faux-Orwellian arpeggiated wankers.

51. Ian McShane - Avalon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J583NFHoZ-c&feature=related

It was a toss up between this and his version of This Guy's In Love With You but Avalon just won out in the end because I like to think of Lovejoy chanelling Ferry.

Oh look. They've just ruined Christmas

Believe I love The Fall, and could fill the other thread with many of their covers, but fuck me:

96. The Fall - White Lightning

Agreed with the pro-Fall sentiment, but how about this bilge?

Yeah, plus, even though Travis were already becoming quite unfashionable, it got a lot of attention and, going by memory, popularised the useless trend of "ironic/hip/indie cover versions of pop songs". Reports came in that Coldplay were "wackily" doing Like I Love You on their tour around the same time...ugh!

Come back Gary Glitter, all is forgiven.

As bad as that is...

45. Jamie Cullum - The Wind Cries Mary

Sands all the melodic quality off of the original, and replaces Hendrix's soulfulness with Cullum's smugness, exemplified by his increasing insistence in belting out the word "Mary" as loud as possible. Horrendous.

DJ One Record

Torn between sticking this in here or the Least Credible Rap thread. Right now, I think this thread needs more attention:

44. The Automatic - Gold Digger

The definitive answer to the question "Whatever happened to The Automatic?"

On nightmare-inducing power alone, I vote yes.
