As the other thread seems to be lost in H.S. Arts I thought I'd start another one as I enjoy listening to other verbwhores stuff..oh and foisting my stuff onto you all.

So last night I gave myself a music exercise. 2 Hours, All one takes (hence loose playing).

I give you 'Coffee, Tea or Me?" (A soundtrack to an imaginary porn film)

The last song I made was about a year ago according to SoundCloud. Sort of a techno vibe mostly inspired by The Knife, I guess. A lot of people said it was easily the best thing I've made which is both extremely gratifying and depressing, seeing as it now seems to have been the last gasp of my attention span before I completely lost interest in bedroom production. I still have the desire to create music (probably more so with someone else, physically as opposed to electronically, on my own) but I don't have the energy required to even sit here and tab shit out for hours with a mouse and sift through endless drum samples for the perfect sounds.

It's a shame, because I used to make music so prolifically and I always preferred spontaneity over heavily-produced professional stuff, but when I moved from FruityLoops to Reason all of that went out of the window and I found the music I was making to be extremely sterile. I didn't have fun making music any more, whereas beforehand I never even realised how much fun I was having banging out any old crap. I listen back to that stuff now and much prefer the methods of making music I used back then; specifically, not remembering at all how I made it. It just jumped out of me and I pretty much had no fucking clue what the hell I was doing. I just knew I wanted to make music.

Just now was the first time I've listened to this song in a fair few months and it really made me sad because at the time of making it, people started saying that I had my own sound going for me and that I should keep in the groove and not lose sight of what I was doing. Making music seems like a distant memory to me now, and I sort of feel like a part of me has just vanished. Thinking now about making music this way, I honestly wouldn't even know where to start, and maybe that's a good thing because I really want to go back to the way I used to do it... but who knows whether or not I will ever even bother.

Either way, here's the song. I hope you like it.

Long story, short version.

I was thrust into familiarising myself with Ableton a couple of weeks ago because I couldn't believe that Live's sample manipulation was anywhere near as much of a chore as FLStudio.... and fell in love!

Second creation. Nowt special. Beach Boys FTW[nb]For The Warp[/nb]:

Is Ambleton better than FL Studio for a non dance music person like me?

Personal opinion (obviously), I would say yes. I've been dicking around with FL Studio for some time and find Ableton's interface far better laid out for a start and more functional in some respects. It lets you get on with the creative stuff a lot quicker than FL does. The learning curve doesn't seem as steep as FL's either.

Check YouTube out for tutorial videos and you'll probably get a better idea of what I'm on about :-)  It's lovely!

Ableton and FL Studio, Audiomulch, Reason...what is point

Their interfaces are rubbish. What's the problem with the simple idea of layering and chopping up different tracks?

Music software that forces you through their gimmicky interface just to build a track infuriate me. Even Audacity doesn't make it as easy as it ought to be.

Just have a timeline, some layers and allow you to import and change things to your exact specification. It doesn't matter what flash shit a program has- if you can't do those things with ease from the get go, it's shit.

Yeah, I would say Ableton better lends itself to recording stuff like that. I wouldn't even attempt to use FL with any hope of a decent result. Again though, personal opinion etc.

Nothing at all. However I'm finding Ableton to be as quick, if not quicker, to use than a multi-track recorder. Suits my needs perfectly in fact.

[Edit] oh, and the automation capability is sweet! i'm a bugger for using effects and it's far superior to FL in this respect. no need to draw automations in (although you can), you can play/record and do the knob tweaks on the fly so anything with, say, an x-y adjustment is instant rather than editing two parameters separately. erm, hope that makes sense. i'm not good with the terminology...

Nothing at all.

Even multi-track digital audio workstations are needlessly, pointlessly unintuitive on the whole.

I use an old version of MAGIX which is very simple and uncluttered, you just drag and drop everything like a dream, and you can do all the complex shite with a simple standalone software that loads VSTi's.

So after the realisation last week that my career in electronic music was deader than dead, I pulled up my socks and decided to have one last pop at doing something productive. I cracked open the voice memo recorder on my iPhone, recorded a bunch of vocals and harmonic layers and even a rap, emailed them to myself and slapped them all into a Hot Chip-style pop song about racism. The voice memo recorder is actually a pretty good microphone and I've wanted to sing on something for ages.

I'm quite pleased with the result and I had more fun and felt more instant excitement making this than I have with anything else in the last god knows how long. As such, it only took me three days to string all of this together. I feel like I actually want to pursue this jokey singing lark (inspired mostly by the mighty Ween of course) and would greatly appreciate any feedback at all, please!

Here you go then!

Nags, that's fucking marvellous.
I've been thinking of trying something similar when I have the time.

I've been messing on with some guitar rock instrumental stuff, I've got a load of songs I'm going to get on to Souncloud when I get the chance. They don't really fit with the musical tastes of this forum[nb]Although there were a few supporters for Satriani when Steve Vai/noodling was discussed[/nb], but you're gonna get them anyway.

Thanks, NoSleep mixed the track & the Dynamism LP.

We were lost in between Ninjatunes bigger acts such as the Herbaliser & DJ Vadim, still I hope the music stands the test of time a little sympathetically than some of my old label mates :)

^ Absolutely love the style and the melody, but I really think it would benefit from a fresh pair of ears for the mix*. I would have liked to have heard the bass come through more, especially given that it's a funk track, and the vocals need to be louder, especially given that they're quite heavily processed. Really enjoyed it though and would like to hear more.

*Not saying for a second that I would do a better job, but I would love to have access to the stems to have a crack at it, just for a bit of practice.

Showing off time! It is my new album Riparian Forest available for the fee of £0 on Sirona Records.

This one is really my first full on attempt at synth composition, so there's a lot of dripping ambience with field recordings, as you would probably expect by now, but done in a 90's style.
