Just got my Virgin today (I had broad-band installed too), and this....

It's the 60mb one, is that right?

MojoJojo

Your upload speed is better than mine, and my download speed is better at 17MB/s

I'm on the basic 20Mb/s package though.

However - your ping is a lot higher than mine, and Skipton 50 miles away seems a bit of a unlikely closest server, unless you are living somewhere a bit remote (not that that should affects things anywhere near that much with cable).

It normally takes a few days for things to settle down properly though - so I'd wait a few days and see what speeds you can get from popular torrents and stuff before phoning virgin up.

(Edit - apparently the basic virgin package is 30Mb. Or that might just be what you can sign up for now.)

No, that's not right at all. You should be getting 60mb from the moment they install, unless they say otherwise

Santa's Boyfriend

Why do you need it to be faster?  I have a down speed of 9.7Mbps and Netflix plays HD on my PS3 without any trouble.  iPlayer sometimes skips around in the evenings, but I'm assuming that's a problem with iPlayer rather than the connection (I'm on Virgin), since Netflix still plays fine when it does that.  Faster is obviously better, but 23Mbps isn't shit!

And that's about as good as it gets for me. You people make me sick.

hi Santa,

I assume he is on the 40mb / 10mb package in which case that is significantly lower than what he should be getting.

The main advantage of having these speeds is getting whole TV series.. it takes under an hour to get a whole run of anything..

But the best thing is steam games as they come down at 10MB/s or 36GB an hour. I very easily filled up a 1.5TB hdd, need to install the 3TB in at some point

Yep, games are getting huge now, so downloading a 10gb game is a non-issue on a 100mb link

Plus if you get your films through less salubrious methods, you can get an 8gb blu-ray in 10-15 minutes or whatever

100mb is also unlimited, so downloading a film or a game doesn't then throttle you and make your porn download slow that night

Are you making sure to turn off any downloads/uploads you have underway whilst taking the test?

Also, is your router secure (or are all your neighbours enjoying your new bandwidth)?

small_world

Yeah, secure, changed passwords and stuff. And tried it without anything else downloading...

I'll see how it goes in to the middle of next week, but I am right in thinking it should be higher than that?

On a similar note, I used to be with Tiscali/TalkTalk in the old house, and I used to download loads of stuff (rightly or wrongly), are there many differences between ISP's and their tolerances to copyright/adult material downloads?

Jamie Oliver is fat

not really, it depends if they're being leaned on at the time, but they're all as likely to block a site as each other IMO

never seen any differences in terms of porn

you should be seeing 60mb/s download

I'd have had second thoughts opting to sign up to an ISP who used to be a big name in the music industry, that's for certain. Virgin were one of the first to agree to comply with any restrictions on downloading from certain sites (and I think some are blocked), whereas Talk Talk were, perhaps, the only one to categorically state that they would refuse to do this to their customers. Things could well have changed in recent months, though.

No.

Have they reversed their position on blocking sites since 2010? They were very proud of their censorship initiative back then it seems.

wasp_f15ting

Small World, are you sure you have virgin media fibre optic?

They do ADSL 2.0 which comes through your phone line.. If that is the case that speed is consistent.. if not i'd get on the blower straight away as that speed is not right for their fiber optic
