Metal Gear Solid: Rising. No, hang on...Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

This looked like a good game:

High-quality engine, plus the promise to be able to 'cut at will' makes for some exciting gameplay opportunities.

A year and a bit later, here's the follow-up trailer:

Doesn't look as good, right? Platinum Games, the new developers, gave been previously responsible for some jolly good fun in the shape of Bayonetta, MadWorld and Vanquish. This looks no different, which is rather a disappointment. The ability to cut 'everything' has been dialled back significantly, promising a more trashy Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry experience. Also, 'Revengeance' is an appalling nonsense of a subtitle, even in an industry full of them.

What makes it a bit more intriguing is that Kojima Productions appear to be acknowledging their failure, releasing extended self-flagellating interviews and press conferences that detailed exactly what went wrong. Long story short, they couldn't figure out a way of applying the cutting mechanic without allowing the player to break the game, particularly as they were keen to include stealth elements. They went over time and over budget, leaving Kojima to ultimately pull the plug and bring in a new team.

I'm not much of a MGS fan, but Rising did seem like it'd be unique. I'm sure it'll be fun, but it's sad to see such potential fall flat. It's also rather unpleasant for Kojima to effectively pressure his employees into publicly humiliating themselves, however compelling an insight it is.

Anyone hear about this?

The trailer makes this just look like Vanquish.. as good as vanquish was, it was rather mundane, boring and repetitive.

I hope the story of Kojima is still retained. I can't believe he made all his employees say how shit they were on film and then distributed it on the internet..

I'm looking forward to the new HD-ised versions of the early games (as long as I can still make all those guards in that big room appear in their pants if I do things a certain way, I'll be a happy boy).

You can get the import version from grainger game shops for about £40 which isn't too bad considering.
I can't wait to play snake eater.. but I dunno whether to wait to play it on the 3ds..

Funnily enough, I thought the trailer looked alright but was let down by the music.  That said, it's going to be a tough job to impress people with MGS quality in mind... Could be another Silent Hill: The Room, which initally started out as a different game I seem to recall?

edit: hopefully the music isn't representative of the final product and just for flashy advert purposes.

Wow... check out the hedging at 10 minutes in. Very professional.

Disappointed in this, the new title sounds like it was thought up by some jerk off of The Apprentice. This will cheapen the Metal Gear name somewhat, but it's only a spin-off story after all. Lets hope it spurns them on to make sure MGS 5 is as good as it can be.
