Seems like a simple thing but I'll be damned if I can find one.

As per the title, I just want to stream stuff off my server[nb]http://freshmeat.net/projects/musicindex/[/nb]. On a normal PC I use vlc, but that doesn't work on Android and nothing else seems to either.

Subsonic?

I use it all the time and it's great.

Edit:
That said, I've just done a bit more research as I'm still in the 'trial' period. I was under the impression that it was donationware and when the trial period runs out I would lose access to the username.subsonic.org address that is set up for you. That's no big deal as I connect directly to my server anyway. However, apparently you lose access to all the API calls, which means that the Subsonic Player on your phone will stop working, as you will only have web-access to your server. This is far from ideal from a phone, and slightly annoying that they advertise as free donationware when actually it's really trialware.

That said, whilst I think this is a bit misleading, the minimum donation is 10EUR, and I'll probably pay up when my time is up because it's a great service. Still worth checking out the trial to see if it works for you. In the meantime I'm going to find if there are any services as good as Subsonic for free as I'm a tight-arse.

I've used Skifta from my home DLNA server. Not tried it on the move yet though. Does music, photos and videos.

Skifta

Nope and nope.

I'm after something that I can just point to a URL and it'll stream it, no libraries, no predefined servers. The irritating thing is, pretty much all of them probably can do this, it's just none of them have the interface to allow you to.

Doesn't realplayer do that? (obviously the answer is going to be no)

Also, Stream Media Player? Haven't tried it myself and it doesn't score particularly highly, but it seems that listening/watching media streams is its purpose:

Humm....

My mind automatically filters realplayer out, various nightmares with .rm formats and the bloat (my god the bloat!) in the 90s. But, it's the closest so far, actually recognises the links and makes a stab at it, but fails at the last post for some reason.

No joy.

You're right. This does seem to be ridiculously difficult for something that should be so easy.

Is the address of your server static? If so, you could always add yourself as a broadcaster on TuneIn Radio. I believe it's free, but this a fairly inflexible solution and probably isn't going to be what you're looking for:

Otherwise, I had a look at some ShoutCast Players as I figured they may allow for other protocols as well. There's a list of players here, and there may possibly be at least one which fits the bill... although it is looking increasingly unlikely.

The way the system works is you can web-browse through various directories and pick individual files/directories to stream, so you can't just rely on one link to the server.

It's weird and I'm really surprised that Winamp and VLC (both of which can do this in the desktop version) fail to support it. Even my old Nokia 770 and N810 tablets could do it with the standard software.
