Draw Something (daft Pictionary-esque phone app)

This game is awesome. It works much in the same way as Words With Friends in that you can connect through Facebook or search for usernames or both or whatever. The rules are childlike: pick a random word given to you (there are three to choose from: an easy, medium or difficult thing to draw) and take as long as you want with as many attempt as possible to draw it. Then your opponent has as many guesses as they wish from a jumble of letters containing those required to name the drawing.

There's virtually no real competitive element to it seeing as you have as long as you want to draw/guess. The only thing affected is if one of you can't guess what the opponent's picture is, it breaks the tally of consecutive successful rounds that count up as you go, and starts fresh from zero. Based on the difficulty of the picture, it awards you one, two or three coins after each successful guess. These coins build up and can be used to buy (wait for it) more paint colours! This basically just heightens the fun and level of awful detail you can achieve if, like me, you're desperately trying to draw something really good with a pretty crappy game interface on an iPhone screen. iPad users will fucking lap it up though, like my girlfriend, the wanker.

Anyway it's a lot of fun to play and very easy-going (again, much like Words With Friends) and the free version bombards you with a lot less advertising than WWF, so yeah...

My username is Nagsworth. Show me what you got!

Fucking hell, it keeps saying my picture has been sent then it fucking doesn't save. Time wasted drawing a fucking macbook and a fucking furby (the latter being particularly fucking good)

I used to play a similar game on a site, but I can't remember what it was... similar to http://www.guessasketch.com/

Played it with Something Awful people I think, so there were catchphrases (and casual racism/homphobia) galore.

just joined you

I sincerely hope your username is Keithos because I've been sending him some obscene guff in the vague hope that it was a Verbwhore who would get the irony. If not, god help his poor soul, and more to the point where's my fucking picture you cunt?

Yeah that's me. I can't help but notice that you have a far greater ability at drawing with your finger than I. I'm convinced you either have a thinner finger than me, a bigger screen or are using a stylus. I do like your humourous pictures anyway.

That's cuz I'm a fackin artist mate.

The iPhone is a bitch to draw on, though, and the calibration of the app is pretty shit as well. Still, I've used drawing apps before because I like to send friends silly pictures so I have a bit of experience. That and all my years of MS Paint slaving.

glitch

Nagsy I'm beginning to notice a pattern forming around your entries...

buntyman

What's your draw something name Glitch? Nagsworth is taking too long to do new drawings and i'm beginning to have to fill my working days with work.

glitch

In as xerode. And yes, Nagsy takes too long - hurry up fella!

alan nagsworth

Haha, sorry. This game is such a massive drain on my battery that I only play it when I'm at home with my phone on charge, and when I'm not poring obsessively over the forums like I am now. Surely it's worth it for all those crude and amazing drawings I do?

You know you can write words, right? Helps if you get three rubbish words!

This game would be even better if it didn't crash on me every five fucking minutes.

Played it with Something Awful people I think, so there were catchphrases (and casual racism/homphobia) galore.

There was a great one called brokenpicturetelephone, which was a kind of Chinese whispers thing of several panels - people interpreting a drawing through text, or converting text into a drawing, on and on along a group of however many people to see if the same picture would be communicated from (eg.) panel 1 to panel 12.  It was great, but it just stopped working one day, and long before that it had become ruined by people trolling it.  (Nearly every run would be wrecked by references to poop.)

A game I quite liked doing online about six months ago is called Draw My Thing.  It's populated largely by 13 year olds, but it's easy to get a group of friends together and have a lot of fun.  The difference here is time limits of about a minute to draw, but I think that brings something to the game.

The frustration I had with both of those was that I use a laptop trackpad to draw, while others are using a mouse or even one of those proper drawing tools with a stylus.  It's easy to be the comparatively shit one when you're just scraping your finger on a trackpad, and I hope that Draw Something segregates iPad players with tags saying that they're cheating, so that they can't get away with being better than everyone else.

I have since deleted this game, sorry to everyone begging for a chance to witness my amazing artwork. Too many games going and playing one shot means scrificing 10% of my battery life and so I can only play at home, where I have infinitely better things to do like browse CaB for hours or talk to my girlfriend. Also the UI is fucking shit on the iPhone and it frustrates the hell out of me.

However, here are some of my moments of glory for you to look at:

Excellent work, Nags.

Here's another game that seems closely modeled on the defunct Broken Picture Telephone:

I'm out of practice. I had to draw a bee earlier, and was utterly stumped.

I've turned green, which is a colour I'm not allowed to use in the game until I've put 15 hours of gameplay in.

Having looked at it, it seems to be exactly the same as Draw My Thing, by the same people, which has a more fun "live group" element to it.  If you're doing Draw Something at home to save phone battery, you may as well check out the website for Draw My Thing on your computer too.

What's shit about it?
Having to get 249 coins for more colours is irritating I agree, but I really like how this app works.
If you have to be a developer to spot the faults, it can't be that bad.

To me it feels cheap and shitty. It's just not that slick: it looks and feels like somebody's Flash hobby project. It crashes a lot on my Galaxy S II. I'm fussy though.
