Euro 2012:

My preferred french squad:

------------------------------------Hugo LLoris--------------------------------------
--Mathieu Debuchy---Laurent Kocielny----Philippe Mexes----anyone but Evra--
----------------------------------Yohan Cabaye-------------------------------------
------------------Yann M'vila----------------------Samir Nasri---------------------
----Menez/Valbuena---------------------------------------------Franc Ribery-----
----------------------------------Karim Benzema-----------------------------------

The French defense looks excellent, with Debuchy or alternatively Sagna being to world class right backs, Kocielny and Mexes two good centre backs and anyone but Evra being ok as well. The midfield is the weak point imo, no real super solid, world class players there, don't trust Nasris mental strenght since his time in Arsenal, Cabaye has looked unpredictable the last couple of months. The most talented midfielder of the mid to late 80's generation, Yoann Gourcuff, has been lost to mental problems and injuries and shouldn't be in the squad at all.The forwards look strong with Karim Benzema and Franc Ribery being world class options in their positions and Olivier Giroud being a really strong forward to put into the striker position.

My preffered Swedish squad

------------------------Isaksson----------------------------------------
---Mikael Lustig-----Jonas Olsson----Olof Mellberg----Martin Olsson
--------------------Anders Svensson---Kim Källström-----------------
--------------Sebastian Larsson-------Ola Toivionen-------------------
-----------------Zlatan Ibrahimovitch-----------------------------------
-----------------Johan Elmander-----------------------------------------

Sweden looks at least equal to the English team. Isaksson is not as good a goalkeeper as Hart but he's not too bad. The back four is solid, the midfield is technical enough and Zlatan in a more receded role has made him much more involved in both defense and passing game. The possibility of adding great subs like John Guidetti and Rasmus Elm is also a bonus. Sweden also has three unusually dangerous set piece specialists in Larsson, Elm and Kim Källström. Elm is capable of lame stokeish long throws into enemy penalty box and has shot a couple of corner kicks straight into goal.

If i was England manager i would play both Wilshere and oxelaide-chamberlain in midfield as first choices. Just for the hell of it.

Beagle 2

I'd take that Petey Crouch, he looks the tits.

Slaaaaabs

Crouchy over Carroll any day of the week. Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck and Crouch would cover the bases quite nicely.

Humper

I hope Stuart Pearce takes England to the Euros, purely because I want to see young players given a chance, people like Wilfried Zaha.

George Oscar Bluth II

Grant Holt needs to lead the line, second top English scorer in the Premier League this season after Rooney y'know.

Hank Venture

Why the French squad specifically?

Slaaaaabs

Holt is a good shout, certainly give him a look in the pre tournament friendlies.

Michael Mancienne likes this idea.

I like French football.

The French turned over the Germans a few weeks ago, could be in with a real shout. Amazing turnaround, from shambles to contenders in two years for them.

RickyGerbail

France always have the potential to be strong, 2010 was a matter of bad luck, generational shift and Raymond Domenech.
If one looks at the 2010 squad it's obvious that there wasn't a lot of good players there. Benzema and Nasri didn't get picked, young players like Gourcuff and Gignac didn't do anything good and niether have had great careers afterwards, the main striker was an ageing Henry who had played 21 games for barcelona and scored 4 goals the 2009-2010 season, Ribery being low after the sex scandal, only crud on the right wing ,mediocre midfield (Toulalan?) and a bunch of really bad personalities (Evra, Anelka, Gallas and Ribery). It was more or less a perfect storm and it shouldn't really come as a surprise that they got better pretty quickly. Personally i wouldn't want to draw any conclusions from that friendly against Germany but i think there are other signs that hint to France doing quite well this year, a much better squad than in the world cup is an obvious one, but also a playing style that isn't as anachronistic as before, more based on possession and pressing all over the pitch.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

I actually think who is up front is one of the most over-discussed topics about the England squad, we have a number of players who will perform there capably, the problem is how to balance the midfield, and how to construct a pattern of play that provides the forwards with chances.

If we take the view that our forwards need usually 2 or 3 chances to put one away, then we should play a high tempo direct style, if we take the view that they are pretty clinical in front of goal then a more patient short passing game would work.

Personally I think our current strength is our pace with the youngsters, and Wilshere and Parker's strong continuity play.

Weaknesses, a slow defence, lack of technical ability, mentally fragile older failures, fatigue due to our unbroken league season.

However, the tournament looks like it will be done with rubbish on-the-hoof gameplans and a manager who just whips up the boys in the usual hot headed style, at a loss of any tactical insight. Fair?

thepuffpastryhangman

We bottle it coz we've got a weaker sense of group identity.

And we've got no players who thank God when they score (have we?).

Kinda go together those two.

RickyGerbail

Took a little look at the dutch national team today. It's interesting how few (none) defenders they have playing at any high profile clubs. It's also interesting that some of their midfielders are not coming into this championship with great seasons behind them. Sneijder has only played thirteen games for inter and has been injured throghought the year, Affelay has played 1 match for Barcelona and Dejong 14 for Manchester City. I also remember hearing on the guardians football weekly podcast that Sneijder haven't played very well in the matches he's actually been playing,. An out of form, rusty Sneijder would be a huge negative for Holland. Attackingwise  there's been discussions about whom to play, Van Persie or Huntelaar, given the latter having performed better with the national team than Van Persie. The best course of action would probably to try out Van Persie as first choice in the comming friendlies in may, he's had excellent form and lack of injuries during this year.

Allez les bleus. Another fan hère (ever since WC 1986 - vs. Brazil).

Dreadful in recent times - appallingly weak minded, but there is a sliver of hope now. If they can beat England then I fancy a strong tournament, if not. Au revoir.

doppelkorn

I've got a soft spot for France, Germany, Holland the Czech Republic and Croatia. Anyone but England basically.

I could never understand why I was supposed to spend 9 months of the year hating Alan Shearer then support him once every two years, while doing the opposite to Peter Schmeichel or Eric Cantona. United > England.

Also England are rubbish and people cry if they lose, like big babies. Finally, another reason not to support England is because The Sun supports them.

I like France and Germany because I used to live in both of them places, and I developed a begrudging fondness for the teams, especially the German team of 2006. The behind the scenes documentary of that World Cup is a great watch. The team spirit in the camp seems miles ahead of what I imagine the England dressing room will be like.

Perversely I also started supporting Holland around then, because it annoyed my German friends because of the passionate rivalry between the two sides.

Czech Republic and Croatia I support because of Euro 96 and their natty kits respectively.

Neville Chamberlain

I think the key thing for England is to remain strong up front without compromising their weaker flanks on the edge-wings. Crouch is great at this, particularly on the chest, but Giggs is the man with the shins to pull off a much more aligned run-through down his flanks at the end of the day.

the midnight watch baboon

Giggsy? Yer big Santa Hat wearin', ladyboy fancyin' purple coconut!

I hope England do 4-3-3 with the likes of Sturridge, Young, Walcott I suppose, arrowing excitingly intowards Rooney, Welbeck, Holt.

RickyGerbail

The English midfield is not so good though, that's a problem. It would maybe become decent if they let the ox and wilshere play at the same time, aiming to have as many Arsenal players on the field as possible would probably be a good thing, given how much Arsenal focuses on passing. Actually, a midfield like this:

               Scholes
Chamberlain Wilshere

would look pretty interesting.

And talking about midfields:

Javi Martínez (Athletic Bilbao), Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), Iker Muniain (Athletic Bilbao), Xavi Hernández (vice-captain)(Barcelona), Cesc Fàbregas (Barcelona), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona),
Thiago Alcântara (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Málaga), David Silva (Manchester City), Jesús Navas (Sevilla).

omfg.

micanio

Will Mikael Lustig get called up for the Swedish squad? He's only played 2 games for Celtic since he arrived in January...

RickyGerbail

he's probably going to be in the squad, there are barely any other decent alternatives in that position.

Neville Chamberlain

I like Mikael Lustig - he's funny!

Do they?

Yeah. They're not mutually exclusive but they crop up together a lot.

Maybe because I am English other, mostly Catholic and sunny nations just seem to enjoy closer kinship. I don't mean the Spanish eating paella every day, it's much harder to pin down. They're all the same that lot y'know. Perhaps 'English reserve'
stops us being that way. I dunno. But it's worth half a goal a game or an extra penalty in a shoot out.

The Germans have calculation and guilt to help them. The Dutch are somewhere between then and us. The French use any excuse to be proud of themselves. The Czechs have the collective identity thing happenin'.

We've got none of that. I passed the Give Peas A Chance graffiti on a bridge on the M1 (maybe it's the M25?) recently, for the first time it hit me, 'All we are sing-ing, Is give Pearce a chance'. FFS Psycho. As reads the tattoo on his arm so he doesn't forget his name. No name tattoos on 'Arry Redknapp, no point. He might not know his name but he can't read anyway.
These are our leaders. We have no hope.

The Duck Man

Giuseppe Rossi's out of the tournament with a knee injury. I do actually struggle to name much of Italy's squad these days, there goes another.

Dark Poet

England have currently sold less than half their allocation for their games so I dread to think how few people from other countries will bother to travel.

RickyGerbail

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/apr/14/arsenal-jack-wilshere-england-euros

potentially a big minus for England if Wilshere can't make it. Swedens chances are looking better.

Well, the best way is to try to linger on the penultimate syllable.

Really? England are usually the best travellers too. Anyone know how many Ireland are taking, if the Irish aren't going either the tournament's in real trouble...
