Do you just need Arma 2, or all the plugins too? I'm on Steam and don't want to spend too much.

Toast

You need Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead installed.  Steam sells a bundled version called Combined Operations which includes both games together. It's pretty pricey at the moment, £24.99.  Once you have those there's a nice installer here that makes installing the Day Z mod and keeping it up to date much easier:

Its £19.99 from the developers own webstore

I used that worrom installer thing with it easily too.

Warning: This is almost content-free post.

In what some might describe as "a trivial use of Google that anyone could accomplish", I've found a Singleplayer Day-Z mission which (also allows you to cheat a little).

No idea if it works with the latest code, because I haven't actually had a go yet. I want it to, because I find hovering around Arma II while listening to Woman's Hour very relaxing, but I'd quite a little bit of danger.

Edit: Well, it does work with the latest 1.6x release. And I've learnt that DayZ doesn't have Mils which is a bit irritating. Must be somewhere to fiddle with that...

i just get kicked from all the servers i try to join. i've got a decent connection and computer so i don't get it. get kicked even though i have around 50 in ping on some.

Maybe they all know you?

I've been alive for many days now, and I've began to avoid contact with anyone since I'm convinced they'll shoot me on site for the stuff in my backpack. The thought of someone killing me to steal my compass sickens me. They're all out to get me, I have to get to them first.

Toast

And... I was just killed. Sitting in a field ready loot a small town when I heard a whoosh sound, then another one, before I could run I was down. I managed to get back up and start crawling through the grass but another bullet finished me off. I actually feel a sense of loss for my character, he went through so much and this is how it ends? I never seen who shot me. A game has never made me feel like this, normally when I'm killed I want to jump back in but I don't feel like that, I need to work through this before I can start again, come to terms with what happened.

When you're thinking of starting again Toast, please let me know if you'd like to try teaming up.

I do keep trying to act as if I trust strangers - while actually simply trying not to give a toss that they'll inevitable shoot me in the back - in what is proving to be a series of very short attempts to lead by example.

I'm jumping back in now. Teaming up sounds good, might keep the bandits at bay. Are you on Steam?

Zetetic

Yep. My account name is "zetetic".

Edit: This might help.

I'm looking forward to trying the next update, there's also some talk on the Day Z forums about spawning without a weapon which sounds interesting.

Changes:

* [NEW]    Infected can't attack through walls
* [NEW]    Infected can't see through objects any more

These sound lovely.

* [NEW]    You can hide from an infected chasing you

Great idea, I was playing with Zetetic and we ran out of ammo and were being chased through the countryside by zombies, it's very hard to find ammo and run as fast as you can at the same time. It ended quite badly.

Zetetic

That does seem quite important - I'm a little surprised that Arma didn't handle some of this stuff (at least the line-of-sight) by default.

So this game suffered some drama?

Well, I figured out how to spawn bombs on top of players in game using the scripting engine, while thousands of people had already been using the scripting engine to do inconsequential stuff like spawn weapons. I then proceeded to post the script all over 4chan, knowing they would make full use of it as my friend and I went from server to server and systematically blew each one of them up, mostly having targeted the reddit server. This went on for about 3 days before it became super rampant, and the reddit server got so upset by this that they decided to password their server, which is against the developer's rules and will lead to their server being blacklisted. (http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/v2n6o/due_to_the_severe_influx_of_hacking_we_will_be/)
All of this happening lead to the developer, rocket, to become extremely upset. He shut down ALL of the servers for about 30 minutes, and then banned any player who ever ran a script in the game, which totaled in the thousands. This perma-banned all of the users across all of the ARMA 2 servers which have battleye on.

I made a few videos of it, they're nothing spectaular, you can read the chat though at the bottom left if you set it to 1080p.

QuoteHere's a quick summary, I posted a script and the means method to nuke servers all over 4chan, my friend and I went to tons of servers and started relentlessly nuking them to laugh at chat after the people die, as the game has permadeath and they lose everything they've worked for. After 3 days of doing this, the game's developer shuts the game down completely, and bans every single person that's ever run a script while playing dayz. He goes and acts like a total dick on his forums laughing at all the people that got banned, a few hours later, he goes to the largest ARMA 2 hacking site and starts crying about how he done bad and how he was pushed to this.

I've missed all this since I haven't played for a bit. I upgraded to the latest version a few days ago and lost my position when I tested it so I'll have to find Zetetic again. It seemed a bit buggy when I played it so I've decided to leave it for a few days until things calm down. Lots of updates today though so hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

Latest changes

Edit: Good news from the forums:

Quote from: RocketDue to constant and sustained hacking, the central server has been dropped to prevent any further degradation of service to DayZ players, and safeguard any corruption of player data.

It is now being bought back online. BattlEye is processing an update for all servers.

We're sorry for the delay, and the problems people experienced.

TO CONFIRM: SERVER IS BACK ONLINE AND UPDATE HAS BEEN RELEASED

We got info from BE that those who have previously been using hacks have received a GLOBAL BAN via BattlEye. Yes, that's right. You just bricked your copy of ArmA2 in multiplayer.

This does look amazing, but I just know I don't have the time this looks like it needs to do justice to it.

I still don't have time for this, so didn't bother buying in the Steam sale.

But I have become slightly obsessed with watching YouTube videos of this.

These guys have quite intense videos:

Then there are the strange videos:

Real life DayZ.

I think I may have mentioned this in the Walking Dead thread but maybe it is more suited in the Games section. Abandoned Mall in UK is used to house a real life Zombie game and some US new show have taken an interest.

Anyone willing to give it a go?

Is there an ETA on this becoming a standalone? Or a rough guess even? I'd love to try it out after seeing some of the YTube vids, so much conniving and surviving, tentative buddies turning coat or pulling a hero move to take the heat off their pals, fear filled chases across the dark terrain and a mercy bullet or two from unseen snipers flying by to put the poor, soon-to-be-zombie-dinner players out of their almost inevitable misery.

There's no solid ETA on the standalone, but it is a priority. Here are a couple of relevant posts from the Day Z forums:

Quote from: RocketI've said it will go standalone, that is obvious. It has caused massive sales. But I need concrete stuff, something worth saying, before I come to you and tell you something. I've said it will happen, and this will affect the direction of the mod. There is only so much that can be done in the mod, to the point where diminishing returns apply. Not all bugs can be fixed easily, and many would be much easier (or only possible) in the standalone version directly in source. Yes, this sucks, but that's the nature of the beast and the fact is: the mod is fairly playable in its current state for the vast majority of people.

Quote from: RocketI've already confirmed that it is a certainty it will happen, that much I know. It is just a question of timing, to which I said I believe we will have something to release (as in, standalone) very soon. Previously I have stated I couldn't see why it wouldn't be before the end of the year.

Standalone looks like it might actually be happening.

Bit late to this party, but it's not much of a party for me so far.

After about 20 attempts to join any server I just sit on loading screens.
I can hear people blathering on sometimes but nothing. Just black buggering nothingness.

I tried six-updater, but that just added a whole new layer of confusion to the proceedings.
Then I installed dayzcommander which seems much easier but are either of these actually necessary?

I can load up A:OH no problems, choose a server, loading screen, some sort of lobby chat box or something,
a character creation screen sometimes, loading screen,
then an eternal black screen with "Loading" and it just sits at that forever.

Dayzcommander seems to be the more recommended one. Can't help with your problems, I'm afraid. I still don't even play the game. I still just enjoy watching live streams and good videos.

I had an issue with six-updater until I went in to the options and ticked the "Use the Beta" check box.  I guess it makes sure Arma is using the latest patches. I also think it does some sort of sanity check on the whole thing so if anything is wrong hopefully Six Updater will fix them. Then I clicked update and was able to play. There are two programs in the Six Updater thing, I only ever use this one:

Only options I have in six-updater are these-

Which of those should be ticked/unticked?

My PC wouldn't even run it... but the amount of hours I have spent watching videos of this game is insane. I find it totally mesmerising.

Morrison Lard

Well, it finally decided to work.

Got relentlessly slaughtered by zombies a good few times, then I found a hatchet.
Then I got a quad bike and felt like king o the world, til I inevitably trashed it into a burnt out car.

Didn't find a gun or see any other players on my travels.

Looks a lot of fun, now I just have to try not to be so shit at it.

Heh. I went for a drink with my mate - he's the only 'gamer' I know (we play BF3 together sometimes), and it turns out he also watches all these videos as well.  It's the latest spectator sport!

I have force beta patch ticked on mine, sorry I wasn't at home at the time and couldn't remember the right wording. Sounds like you figured it out anyway though.
