Effin good fun.

Where abouts are you? I can head that way next time I'm on and get us both killed help out if you like? I can't decide if the game is harder playing solo or with a group. I played a few games with Zetetic but the game was a bit unstable back then and we lost our place.

Usually I join one of the UK servers, I think my steam name is "HammerSmashedFace"

PM me when you're kicking about and we can give it a whirl if you want, I'll probably get you killed though so apologies in advance.

Found a satnav and some hi-tech binoculars earlier, got nicely geared up then decided to brave the town.
Some swines chased me into a church and filled me full of arrows and bullets.

Is there any point actually running if you get a zombie after you and have no weapons?
Managed once to shake one off, oo-err, but usually the shrieking gits just encourage more of their pals to join the chase.

Also, weapons!?! Where the heck are they.

North West Airfield has the most weapon spawn points, but it tends to be pretty overrun with players. If you have no weapons and nothing to lose anyway, then you might as well go on a suicide sortie.

Also look out for downed choppers as they can spawn Grade A loot. You may also find weapons in the towns, but they tend to be rarer... also keep an eye out for downed players to loot (listen out for flies).

When chased by zombies, try running through buildings as it tends to throw them off.

Nope, I have still never played this game.

Worth checking out Sacriel42 and DaSquirrelsNuts videos on youtube for some decent tips (amongst others, but those are good starting points). In particular, Sacriel42's Elektro Loot route may be of particular use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzB5ZEkVf9A&feature=plcp

Thanks I've added you on Steam.

It took a long time for me to find a decent weapon, keep searching barns. The best place for them are the military bases and larger cities I think, but they're dangerous places. Perhaps Seal Team CaB can infiltrate them without getting killed.

Edit: Puffin Chunks, you're a better player than me without owning the game. Buy it and lead us!

Try barns and deer stands for basic starter weapons.

When chased by zombies, try running through buildings as it tends to throw them off.

Nope, I have still never played this game.

Zombies can only walk in buildings, so pick a building with two entrances. There are thick pine trees that if you stand right in the middle of, the zombies just give up on you.

If you're aggroing zombies a lot without firing shots, learn to crouch run and avoid them more.

Watch all of Frankie's videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPJ37khFJWI He has some good tips.

Nope, I have still never played this game.

I'd love to play this but my laptop just wouldn't be up to it, so yes, I too just watch the youtube videos.

Any recommendations?

For vids? I'm subscribed to the following (effectively they're the same squad seen from different perspectives).

Go to the oldest DayZ videos and work to the most recent for the best narrative.

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAxeManAndy (absolutely superb satchel charge hacker kill here)

I have no doubt that I would totally suck at this game. I wish I had a decent PC as I would love to do a bit of CaB squad play. Unfortunately I need to get a job first... by the time that happens no one will be playing DayZ anymore.

Oshi has some decent content, but he whines a bit too much. And we don't need face cam. ;-)

This was funny. He was getting destroyed by some decent jet player in BF3, and the jet guy happened to come across a recording of the stream. As jet guy had also been recording, he overlayed the footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpgSiV5BCXQ

Can't argue with that, also his pseudo transatlantic accent grates a bit, especially as it disappears as soon as the situation starts to get stressful. That vid was a great example of toy throwing though.

Never played Battlefield, but from the few videos I have seen I'm not that interested... DayZ seems to be the opposite, where everything takes time and is measured in contrast to Battlefield's run in there and start blasting. I think it's what draws me to DayZ so much.

This is one of the most appealing parts of the game for me.

Spraying off endless rounds, killing people, then dying every 20-30 seconds, in most shooters is boring.
Give me a good old sneak-about, stealthy game anytime.

Hey, hey, now. BF3 has some real heart-pounding moments. There are times when you are sneaky and flank, and when you come across 5 players with their back turned to you... you've got to take as many down as possible before they notice you.

So you have to pay cash to play this game, no matter what?

Well (and this is purely hypothetical mind), you could download Arma 2 and the Spec Ops pack from... somewhere and the Dayz mod it's self is free, yes?

Then all you'd need is a cracked server which doesn't try to authenticate your game/log-in name. So most likely a private group of naughty folks who would then probably vet you in some other way before letting you in.

I've not tried this route myself... yet, as it all looks to be a bit of a pain in the arse, plus it would cut down the variation of attitudes/ways to play the game by excluding the lions share of legit users.

That said I'd easily waste eons playing it, I probably should just stump up now, but I can't help but feel a better, less buggy version would be out 5 minutes after I'd snapped.

Sounds like the Alpha version of the standalone will be released this December.

I'm hoping the standalone is nicer to low spec computers and laptops as I've heard Arma / Day Z is quite spec heavy? No?

I'm really looking forward to the standalone now. It might not sound like much but being able to enter any building is a killer feature for DayZ.

For anyone interested, the Survivor Gamez are tonight. 18 teams of 2 fighting out to the death on a custom map.

Kicks off at 9pm. I have no idea how good/interesting it will be, as I've never seen this kind of game play before, but if you like watching DayZ videos then this could be interesting:

http://survivorgamez.com/home

I'll be following Sacriel's stream (www.twitch.tv/sacriel ) who is teaming up with Oshi7 (www.twitch.tv/oshi7 ), although I'm not sure they'll last long as they haven't played the map before (although they're practising the map at the moment on their streams) and I'd imagine that most teams will be gunning for them.

I think most of the contestants will be streaming and you can pick several streams to watch simultaneously here:
http://spiralnine.com/sg/

Not entirely sure how they're going to prevent cheating via stream sniping, but hopefully it'll be good.

Watching now. This could be a very short game if there are guns in those tents.

They can't have put guns in there.... too much open space around them. It would be stupid if there are. Maybe guns with no ammo.

I can't believe that none of these teams will be cheating.

Rocket (the game creator) is commentating, which is a surprise. Interesting to hear his plans about it. Never knew he was a Kiwi.

Wish they'd hurry up and start!

I'm watching oshi and sacriel's streams. sacriel's got a 2 minute delay apparently. Who's this rez guy?

Is that Rocket on the overview stream?

Sacriel took the delay off, I think. The only other streamer I know of is PsiSyndicate.

If you use this link you can view both their streams at the same time:
http://spiralnine.com/sg/

Need to mute and unmute it to hear. Sadly the overview stream doesn't seem to be on it. It is Rocket on the overview.
