Bobby Treetops

If Cliff does get nicked for kiddy fiddling, does that mean they won't show any Top Of The Pops featuring the Peter Pan of Pop? Or will the BBC erase him from history, Saville style?

daf

He's got another two weeks at number one - hopefully they'll show those when it returns next month.

After that, his next number one is in 1986 (with The Young Ones), all the rest would be fairly easy to edit out - like they do for the 7:30 edit, so no need to scrap the whole show.

Gulftastic

Good news, to help us through this massive gap in the showings, Sue from ver Legs has confirmed on 'One For The Dads' that the repeats will conitune into 1980.

(26)    FRANTIQUE – Strut Your Funky Stuff (and charts)

So with DLT getting a suspended sentence will it mean that they'll end up showing the shows he's on now?

daf

Sadly, I think there's virtually no chance of this - the conviction alone (whatever the sentence) seems to be enough to frighten the BBC horses.

Hopefully the compilers of the 'Big Hits 1980' will take a look at the Savile and DLT shows, and use some of the otherwise unavailable performances in their compilation - I think that's the best we can hope for.

For any compilers reading, here's the list of songs that are only on DLT or Savile shows for 1980 :

So with DLT getting a suspended sentence will it mean that they'll end up showing the shows he's on now?

Hopefully yes. He's been given a suspended sentence of three months so in an ideal world BBC4 would start repeating his shows once it had expired.

However, I'm not holding my breath given frankly irrational coverage like this recent Daily Mail story http://www.donotlink.com/bt3e. There's the cake eating headline which manages to criticise the BBC for airing the footage and also puts scare quotes around the word "disappears" to imply the BBC did something wrong by editing the footage for the iplayer. Plus the amazing mismatch between the quote from the lawyer "it is a constant reminder of what they have been through," and the link to the "Crimes that shook Britain: Jimmy Savile" story which has an picture of a half naked Savile (the top half, fortunately) as its thumbnail.

I frequently get fed up with the supine way the BBC responds to criticism, but when it's that unreasonable I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC decides the simplest solution is to never repeat any more DLT editions.

I'm trying to work out what it says about my taste in music that the first time I looked down that list my reaction was, "fuck, not The Four Bucketeers!" Still at least Keith Michell and Captain Beaky is safely tucked away in a Kid Jensen edition.

Given how associated Two Little Boys is with Rolf Harris, I wonder if the Splodgenessabounds performance might have been doomed anyway.

Gulftastic

Cracking episode this week. I'm a bit mystified at the choice of cutting the Jags in the studio from the early showing, but leaving in the Bellamy Brothers on video.

I'm guessing this is the TOTP debut of a certain Miss Lennox and Mr Stewart then.

This would be their first showing on BBC FOUR, but they had an earlier single on the skipped 7 June (Jimmy Savile) edition.

The link for the full show got 'sabotaged' a while ago, but here's that performance (in a slightly cropped version) :

Ah i forget that the show was going through a period where they played songs out of the top 40. I'm pretty sure though that by the mid 80s they tended not to play any non-top 40. I think they'd just show snippets of some new releases instead.

My rate is much slower than daf's so the Peter Powell edition has only just gone up.

Oh, pipe down!

Just got round to watching this edition. During The Jags performance, just after the first chorus, the red trousered guitarist can be seen in the back of the shot laughing at something. One of the cymbals has fallen over near him, it stays on the floor for the rest of the song but The Jags keep playing like old pros.

Brundle-Fly

When Elvis Costello first heard The Jags single  while on his U.S.tour, he commented, "Cheeky bastards. Let's get home quick and show them who's boss."

"Just a cake and sad"? Eh, what?
