Some of the wettest men on the planet tonight.

And Barry Biggs dressed as a ringmaster.

Still, enjoyed Leg & Co riding chairs like they were sybians, and one of the greatest and most influential tracks of all time as the fade out.

And Barry Biggs dressed as a ringmaster.

What was going on with his Bowtie? It looked like some kind of origami pink elephant.
Maybe it WAS meant to be a pink elephant - to tie in to the circus theme.

Also, I wasn't sure if the person in the cat costume sitting behind him was meant to part of this,
or just someone from the audience (possibly Barry's number one fan). The Director didn't seem sure either!

Gulftastic

From Cilla Black straight into the Sex Pistols. Flipping fantastic.

Interesting show.
Great to see Rockpile on there. Its a shame that their one album was not that great

cosmic-hearse

Aah, that appearance of The Saints playing 'This Perfect Day' (the raw 7" version rather than the slightly more melodic take on Eternally Yours) is possibly my favourite moment in TOTP history. A criminally under-rated band, oft omitted from standard narratives of the history of punk.

I wonder how jarring the opening of the programme must have felt at the time because it still seems weird - no titles, no rundown, just a few words from DLT (without any sound from the audience to boot) then straight into the first artist.

Epic Bisto

Just thought I'd pop in to say the chart rundown on this week's episode is...er, interesting. After all the Creme Brulee-esque acts in the previous rundowns, to see them replaced by the likes of The Stranglers, Jonathan Richman and Television in the Top 30 is great. Smokie are still in there, though. Blimey, this episode is quite good so far - let's hope they don't repeat that Hot Chocolate performance for the tenth time.

She never makes it into the studio for this (aside from the slideshow on the CSO screen). It's been number one for a month,
so why haven't they made a video for it yet? (there was one for 'Winter Melody' earlier in the year, so they've done them before).

Apparently Donna Summer was hospitalised for exhaustion after completing the follow-up album, which would have been around the time I Feel Love got to number one in the UK. It's a pity it never got a video as programmes always insist on using that dire live performance version which completely fails to show how revolutionary the electronics were.

Gulftastic

Annoyed with tonight's ep. It was originally filmed the day after Elvis died and there was a dhort tribute in the show, but the Beeb cut that in the early showing. They could easily have cut the bloke singing the Martini song or the unfortunately named 'Floaters'.

Dug out the 1977 documentary to see the DLT Elvis bit - The "paying tribute in the only way it knew how" was a bit misleading,
as they stuck on Legs & Co dancing to 'Way Down', rather than the actual song cut from last night's show (Loving You).

I wonder if it was a rights problem that caused them to switch the footage in the documentary,
rather than the editor making some sort of cheeky point about the frivolous nature of the show
(i.e. "someone's died - wheel out the dancing girls!").

Can't they do a bit of creative editing to preserve the announcement at least -
the actual audio, but with the film bits replaced with a montage of BBC owned Elvis related film/stills
(possibly from a 1977 edition of  Nationwide or Blue Peter)?

Gulftastic

According to the yes, it's number one webiste, it was a problem with the rights for the film clip from 'Loving You' which caused the beeb to drop it. As you say, I suppose they could have used a montage of clips, but I'm not sure if that is better than cutting the clip altogether in terms of historical accuracy.

I LOVE that site!

Yes, I suppose it would open a can of worms to start fiddling with the shows.
That said, I wish they'd show the DLT Elvis bit at least - and edit after that.

daf

Panic over chaps, according to the 'One For The Dads' website, a 1978 documentary is in the works, and the 1978 shows WILL be shown.

A great week of TOTP - as well as the usual Thursday (the unedited version is 45 mins long!) they are also showing the only surviving episode with Kenny Everett as presenter tonight, along with a 10-minute piece of Kenny giving a tour of the studios.

Anybody else worried about the future of some of the repeats should all of these Savile investigations bear fruit?  It would surely be the biggest test yet of the Beeb's admirable policy of no revisionism.
