Woah, is that E2?! brb

Pedro_Bear

Right then, that one bored lurker, disappear for a bit. This is TouHou talk; you really don't want that tainting your soul.

Imagine anime raised to the power of anime and then opening up an avoidable pit in front of you that you willingly throw yourself down, never to return. You are not ready. No-one is ever ready.

Yeah, yeah, so you've played that one game and now you believe you can take it. We've heard it all before, dripping from the mouths of shrivelled victims who - just like yourself - didn't just walk away when warned.

Begone and be thankful!

They've made it 20% moe-er! Obviously, this is a very good thing, and I can't help wondering whether it might be worth assassinating ZUN just so KyoAni could get their mitts on Gensokyo. But then again, they probably wouldn't want to touch it with a ten foot bargepole given the negative connotations associated with TouHou, none of which are actually present on screen here, another huge plus point. Well, beyond it being TouHou, of course.

This is stunning work for amateurs. The voice actresses in particular are amazing. It's still got that jarring 3D animation in the OP which is a shame as it wrong-foots quality expectations, but in a bad way. The main animation is crisp and pleasingly moe, and so much improved on E1. Like... wow improved on E1. There's a lot of background activity in this episode, and they're getting more confident with it.

The story hilariously isn't going anywhere, even funnier given how very long we wait between episodes. E3 will possibly be storyboarded by Christmas. The fact that it ends on a dramatic, pre-duel cliffhanger is equally amusing.

There's very little fighting in it, but that's what E1 was exploring; whether the insanity of the bullet hell videogames could be animated in context. This was already touched on in another fan flick which tried for a full-on danmaku fight, with some success. Memories of Phantasm was a bit too emo-TouHou overall, though.

What we get instead is their personal take on some crowd-pleaser characters. Remilia Scarlet in particular is imagined as a charmingly stupid, pretentious child, almost. And it works.

They've made Tewi cuter than cute, which I suppose is deliberate for when she kicks off. Marisa and Patchy are perfect, but then they're kind of balanced chracters anyway. Still no Cirno, still no Flandre, and given their take on Remilia we're probably in for show stoppers when they finally do make their way on screen in 2020.

Given that TouHou is whatever we want it to be, this project is making something quite beautiful and playfully humourous. I hope they continue. They're not quite there yet, but they are improving in leaps and bounds.

'Next episode of Yuru Yuri is all about sisters'

Hmach! ahrgh, grummphffft!!...

Ahh, no, hang on now, knowing those buggers they'll easily sideline Akarin like like nobodies business next week and keep her sister squirreled away from us as usual, the merest of glimpses perhaps but that'll be our lot.

I so want her to turn up and glomp/perv all over Akarin for an episode but perhaps it's best we're kept at arms length, never quite getting what we want.

Pedro_Bear

It was Akari's episode last week~♪

It'll be everyone's sister but.

Yeah. We've got to be more careful what we wish for in future, 'kay?

Ah, that was a good one, a nice little window on her obviously well practiced routine of highly questionable activities while everyone else is out, then the swiftly slapped on veneer of civility at the end working even more in her favour.

'There's cake for you too!', even if it's for the school uniform clad, hug-pillow 'you' stashed behind the sofa..

So... I finally got around to watching the K-On film this afternoon. Nearly a month after it's release, thanks HMRC. The package itself was pretty nice, which is always a plus as I've spent loads on limited editions before which have frankly bare and pointless. The storyboard book can certainly pack a wallop, and there's lots of nice colourful artwork in various forms.

I don't think I make it any secret I don't really like K-On. I almost winced at the thought of spending nearly two hours straight watching it after seeing the runtime. But I must say I was rather pleasantly surprised; I really quite enjoyed it. I chuckled a few times, and was generally left feeling happier once it finished. My problems with the francise were still present in the movie, but they didn't detract, certainly not enough to annoy me. I did like the ED set on Brighton beach and the subsequent reprise of Fuwa Fuwa Time. If they were trying to push my buttons, they certainly did.

I've still got the rest of series 2 to blast through, and after watching the first two episodes of it, I don't feel like I'm really going to evaluate my feelings on the franchise as a whole. However, the movie has definitly sweeted the sting somewhat, and making my way through it shouldn't be such a chore as series 1 was.

Also in the parcel along with the K-On movie was Nisemonogatari volume 4, so I'm looking forward to rewatching the epic toothbrushing scene again tonight.

....Somethings are best left in your memory.

Man that part was soooo good.  I love how anime seems to just throw these ideas out for like one ED then fuck them off again.  Just constant aiming to please.

Imagine being a 12 year old girl and getting that as a present from a semi-lucid grandparent.

That whole cover is a wool-puller, it should be a whirling vortex of rabid crayon strikes, clusterfucked scenery and arcane inscribed metallic whips surrounding Kubeys eyes.

Sometimes the MANGA symbol looks a bit jarring on 'sweetness and light' style covers, in Madokas case it should be three times bigger with 'This is crazy shit dawg and not even in a fun pervy way' scrawled beneath it.

Looking at it on that box it's not too bad, but the logo itself is still a byword ('bysymbol'? whatever...) for 'Sweaty, spotty, tentacle-rape loving herbert material' and "The cover might look innocent enough but there's wrong in there!"-types. With Madokas cover that attitude is justified but in a completely different way than they might imagine.)

Their eye scans the box, sees the logo, and since humans are so steeped in the gutter, they've already mentally replaced that shrimp with a cock in their minds and without knowing another morsel of information, would, with great confidence, bet there on the spot with you that this is a cut down version of Squid Girl where they removed all of the sex scenes cos the BBFC wouldn't let it fly.

I'm not saying a new logo for the less pervy/violent/psychologically harrowing titles could end that preconception, hell it might even enhance it and have people giving you funny looks and sniggering as you leave after buying something totally innocent they've misinterpreted as porn or at the very least pathetic wanking material.

It just can look a bit ugly sometimes is all, like a bloodied scar on your DVD box, sometimes it works sometimes it's out of place.

So I'm playing Neptunia 2. You know that game about anthropomorphised consoles. It's pretty bad really, but there's nice touches here and there that means I'm giving it just a bit more of time. My favourite bit is using Keiji Inafune as a weapon[nb]Pretty rich for him consider all the complaints he levels at the Japanese game industry and he appears in this, pretty much the poster boy[nb]or more aptly girl[/nb] for the worst it has to offer[/nb].

But today I was hit a small scene which totally took me by surprise. There's a character in it called Nippon Ichi, who is there to represent Nippon Ichi[nb]obviously[/nb]. She's voiced by Kaori Mizuhashi[nb]This becomes relevant in a minute[/nb]. It starts off with Nippon Ichi teaching a couple of the other girls how to fight monsters, but the dialog trails off into that famous Madoka Magica scene with Mami Tomoe, who has the same voice actress. Almost verbatim in fact[nb]もう何も怖くない,etc.,etc.[/nb]. She meets the same fate as well, after turning her back on the monster. It turns out to be a dream, just like the second scene in the series. To top it off, a character voiced by Eri Kitamura appears out of character for the scene just for the Sayaka reference.

It was just kind of a neat little scene that popped up out of nowhere and put a smile on my face, as it was completely unexpected.

Next time we'll be fighting against a famous mid-90's series.

I'd like to try this game sometime.  It sounds like my sort of idiocy.

You're getting the lipsync really, really well matched to the flow of the jokes!

The ambulances and that entire end sequence could have been a legit dub, delivery-wise.

Funnily enough, now Rukia turning is the weakest gag in it, albeit it's still quite funny.

Kodomo no Omocha (or Kodocha) is a series I've been watching recently, and would like to talk about it. It is mid-90s series based on a popular shoujo manga. Directed by Akitaro Daichi, it is a notable over the top kinetic comedy series.

The series follows the trials and tribulations of young talent Sana Kurata as she balances her showbiz commitments with her otherwise ordinary school life, and quick to pull out her rapping device to ad-lib some random songs at a moments notice. It's a very hyperactive series, some even comparing it to Excel Saga thanks to the protagonist's motor mouth. Rather unfair, because they aren't alike, aimed at very different people, but it comes off with it's own brand of humour with, including characters like a mad author whom fucks about with her editor and zooms around the place in a mini car.

For an old series aimed at younger people it contains some surprising content beyond the humour. The 11 year old protagonist refers to her manager as her pimp, a friend at school contemplates suicide over deep self value issues, and even the Sana herself has to come to terms with the fact she's the abandoned child of sexual abuse relationship. It's all framed from the kid's point of view, so there's no explicit detail, but you can see some quite interesting stuff if you dig a little[nb]I didn't think that lolicon was in popular parlance in the mid 90's, but this show demonstrated it was enough for to mentioned in a shoujo show[/nb]. The somewhat series storylines serve as a nice contrast to the off-beat humour.

It's not all great, and there's certainly characters who can fail to bring the laughs. Certainly the parody of TV comedians Zenjiro, who appears contractually bound to appear in every episode, but nearly always fails to instil any humour. And then there's bat rabbit thing which is bizarrely apparently required to add jabs at the most inappropriate points. It's length does go against it as well, at 100 odd episodes making things some times being drawn out way beyond what is necessary.

But it's an interesting series especially given it's age. It's nothing if not notable for being a bit different, and the energy shown is quite interesting for a show of it's age.

Here is the OP

madhair60

See, I would have watched that, it looks appealing, but one hundred episodes.  Fuck.

Consignia

I totally see where you are coming from. I mean, Kodocha is a product of it's time, I couldn't imagine it being so long in this day and age, even given it's demographic. There's slack all over the place, and could easily have been condensed into a 2 cour show these days. I wouldn't usually go for something like it either due to length, but it had been sitting on my shelf for awhile.

But it's also interesting to compare it with it's peers. I watched some of Tonde Buurin recently, a similarly aged show for the same target, and the differences are astounding. Kodocha is positively modern in comparison.
