Not strictly a cameo, but seeing Leonard Rossiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey throws you out of the movie for a while.

Haha, it certainly does. Slightly less startling was Morecambe and Wise on an episode of the Sweeney. Two cameos in Hot Fuzz, Cate Blanchett and Peter Jackson, were both playing characters that required them to cover their faces during their screentime, making it less than obvious who they are.

As well as Fred Elliot, the second 'Home' sequence in A Clockwork Orange features Dave Prowse proudly showing off his big packet.

Big packet? Well, okay then.

Anyway, not strictly unlikely, but watching Vanilla Sky I was reminded of the rather sweet cameo swap Cameron Crowe did with Spielberg.
Spielberg's at the posh party in Vanilla... And Crowe is in the virtual arcade in Minority Report

Brundle-Fly

Chuck Jones in Gremlins (1982)

Don't know where it stands on the scale of unlikelihood, but Gary Shandling appears for a few seconds during a montage in The Dictator.

Rob 14 Iced Bears is in Shakespeare In Love.

It surprised me just because it's such a tiny cameo. I really love Shandling's past work, and The Larry Sanders Show completely changed the way I looked at comedy when I first saw it, but it's incredibly frustrating that he's done nothing of real value since. I know he's made a few cameos of late and that psychologically, well, he's very complex to say the least, but I wish he'd go back to either performing stand up or making tv in some form or another.

Apart from the Jim Davidson one (which I do wish I could forget but is indellibly burned into my brain), I can only really think of musicians, indie ones at that.

Apparently, Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell is in King Ralph, as is Lawrence from Felt/ Denim/ Go-Kart Mozart, wearing a grass skirt.

Various members of The Pastels & The Vaselines and Bill Wells are in The Last Great Wilderness, wearing dresses and playing in a 'supergroup' in the background. Not sure if this counts as a cameo as The Pastels did do the soundtrack for the film.

Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis has a cameo in Gas Food Lodging, as do members of Red Kross. Actually, I think Alison Anders often has 'stars' of the US underground in her films, although I can't be more specific than that.

Brundle-Fly

Mars Attacks is chockfull of pointless cameos.

Oh I don't know. I rather liked Tom Jones in this

Bad Ambassador

"'Ere, there's a Martian followin' me!"

Michael J. Fox's last non-cameo live-action film.

The 60s Casino Royale seems to consist almost entirely of cameos. Peter O'Toole's is especially good.

Didn't Orson Wells stipulate that he'd be able to perform his magic tricks in the film.

There's a very brief, not even facing the camera cameo by Richard Burton in What's New Pussycat?
