I've heard people who've watched it since, and they say it's shit, so what do i know

They're idiots, "Session 9" is a cracking psychological potboiler with the brilliant Peter Mullan in the lead role. Well creepy and perfect for halloween. The bit where the guy goes back to get the coins is really scary.

By the way, the little-known Japanese flick 'Noroi: The Curse' is worth a watch.

This is on my own Provisional Halloween Night Film List, as it happens. I wasn't sure if I should keep it there, since another strong contender is Lake Mungo, which is also a --- (I really dislike using the term "found footage film" to describe these kinds of things - found footage is Bruce Conner, Ken Jacobs, these sorts of folks - the term was in use for decades, then suddenly everyone decides that it means something else entirely) --- type thing. Now that you've recommended it also, I'll probably have both.

I'm trying to go for things that neither myself nor my girlfriend have seen yet, save for the odd Absolute Necessity (Ghostwatch, The Haunting). So far we've got those two up above, plus Livid, The Tall Man, and The Woman in Black (TV or Potter version, we haven't decided yet. Probably Potter version for the meantime, just for the sake of having something to say about it.) Or maybe we'll chuck that and to hell with the rules, we'll just have The Woman in White again.

Oh, and I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Trick 'r Treat is a great Halloween picture. Not as great as its many devotees would have you believe, for sure, but a really fun film that captures that beautiful, crisp, suburban Halloween feel you get from things like, well, Halloween, and the aforementioned Woman in White, and to a great extent the animated Monster House from a few years ago.

One Horror movie that I remember from my childhood that I always wanted to see but have never gotten around to it was: The Stuff.

The lurid video cover would always draw me to it whenever I was in Ritz Video. Has anybody seen it, or can recommend it?

The best thing about those old video shops were that they were divided up by genre.

Suck it and see...

Alone In The Dark is a forgotten 1982 slasher movie from the director of The Hidden. A top cast to boot. Here's a spooky clip

Dellamorte Dellamore. Not a scary film as such, but a very demented one.

I'd also strongly recommend this short instructional film:

I just started watching Cockneys Vs Zombies!

I just stopped watching Cockneys Vs Zombies.

Oh fuck, I just cannot stand zombie outbreak plots. Even the promise of Richard Briers as a pervy pensioner can't make me sit through the usual round of brains-gobbling and guns. I loved the reason for the outbreak here, but I can't put myself through the ensuing 80 minutes.

The Shining is back in cinemas on Halloween, that's where I'll be.

There's also a related documentary coming out called Room 237.

Not much of a horror fan, and haven't seen it myself, but I've heard a few people saying that Snowtown was worth a look.

Just stick The Thing on, can't go wrong.

Brundle-Fly

Anyone seen The Possession at any festivals? It doesn't seem to have been released yet. I really enjoyed Drag Me To Hell and this looks like similar Sam Raimi hi-jinx cartoon horror fayre.

Snowtown is very good, albeit almost unwatchable (I know several people who only made it about 30 mins in) and very bleak and depressing. Not really "Halloween" viewing, I think something lighter and less realistic is better for this time of year. Stuff like Return of the Living Dead that is tongue-in-cheek and can be enjoyed with a crowd works well.

Yeah not only is Night of the Demon a truly great film, the Demon in it is really not half as bad as made out. Yes it would have been better to leave it ambiguous, but half of me is secretly glad they included it.

I like the way that the DVD cover completely ruins any element of surprise by putting the demon right there on the cover

The original Thai version, of course.  This is one of the very few horror movies I've seen that does jump-scares properly.

Fuck me, I'm laying here watching this in the dark, before bed. Have jumped out of my skin about 5 times so far. Genuinely scary stuff

Cheers for the link. I think. ;-D

The Woman in Black (TV or Potter version, we haven't decided yet.

TV version, definitely. One of the only things I've viewed as an adult to make me literally jump out of my seat. I watched the Potter one on a plane last month and it's hugely ineffective in comparison, especially with that pipsqueak in the lead role stinking up the screen with his awful stilted acting.

Anyone in or within easy reach of London should go and see the stage version of The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre this Halloween season.  I must have seen it five or six times now and it's one of the few things I really miss about London - especially in the autumn/winter months.

I think it has been and gone with lukewarm reception, which is a shame as I also love Drag Me to Hell.

Also I've watched the first Halloween episode of South Park ("Pinkeye") twice this week.

Ghostwatch documentary 'Behind The Curtains' gets a trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-V8Fv6ENa0&feature=youtu.be&a

I tweeted the makers to ask whether it will be a straight doco, or whether we should expect any strange goings-on.

They replied:
QuoteNow, that would be telling. :)

No official release date confirmed but their website says they're aiming to have it coincide with the show's 20th anniversary, which is next week!

Bah. It won't be as good as the one Eclectic Boogaloo made 13 years ago, I was in that. Very remiss of them to overlook me for this one, so fuck it.

I'm really looking forward to this. Is it just going to be on youtube?

It's a great film (save for one or two glaring flaws, this being one of them) - but the fact that not only is the name childishly obvious, but they also insisted on putting in a little argument about it between Rourke and De Niro early on, mentioning it so many times that it'd be hard not to guess who he might actually be.

Cor, that was a bugger to write.

Probably already mentioned but I'll be watching the original Let the Right One In. The most beautiful horror film I've seen.

Oh and the Salem's Lot mini series.

I actually watched it for the first time last night and was "disappointed" that it was nowhere near as bleak as I'd been led to believe by pretty much everyone who's seen it.  Sure it was aiming for a depressing tone and it got that, but I wasn't really made to feel anything other than neutrality throughout most of it.  Of course it's based on a true story and I'm sure it's closer to the reality than an "entertaining" film might have been, but that didn't make it good for me.  At the end of it I was left with nothing; it had about the emotional impact of reading the news story rather than actually seeing it unfold before my eyes.

I can't call it a horror film though.  The remake tried to be more of one, but the original felt no more of a horror film than 'Casper The Friendly Ghost' (albeit far superior, obviously).
