GoldenEye, a firm hired by the British pornography people most of you will be well aware of, had gained access to the private details of people possibly responsible for pirating and illegally distributing their material.

They're currently in deep shit for sending letters that are using the embarrassment of publically being exposed as blackmail to extort money from people, in order to avert potential court proceedings, even though a large proportion are almost certainly innocent.

Threats aren't an uncommon technique, they are incredibly effective if you aren't familiar with your own rights, and aren't familiar with court literature. It's a pretty scummy thing to do, and because of my opinions on piracy generally, I don't have much sympathy. However, it is utterly hypocritical that the porn industry gets sanctioned for something another industry would get away with in the name of protecting copyright holders.

I found this quite an interesting case, as major porno businesses are suffering badly from the new found ability people have to pick up a camera and film themselves fucking stuff, and because of what they do, they aren't receiving as much support in terms of hunting down pirates. It seems that despite the principle being identical, law would prefer to protect record companies and motion picture companies (even those who have vile homophobes, thugs and convicted rapists as clients) than people who make their living paying people to put things in holes and love it.
