I love Jelle's Marble Runs, and I'm pretty confident in saying it's been my favourite sporting event to watch this year. It's pitched perfectly, and if you watch it too, I'm a Hazers fan (despite their logo being pretty boring).

Anyway, British Youtube celebs the Sidemen discovered them this week, doing a show on their "Reacts" channel where they watch an old event and bet on it. At the beginning, they were all "marble racing, this is stupid" but by the end they were screaming in support of "their" marbles and seemed pretty serious about doing a collaboration with Jelle's Marble Runs on their main channel, which has over 10 million subscribers.

It's just nice. Like that time Showaddywaddy and Einsturzende Neubauten were on the same bill and the EN fans apparently had a great time during Showaddywaddy's set. Worlds colliding, and everyone having a good time.

r/ScottishFootball got intae it in a very deep way. And for a fitba' crowd, they ran with the whole replacement thing and got stuck in character being as tinpot and deranged as the Fitba community usually is about Fitba. Old Firm paranoia as a comedy act, plus Jelle set it up perfectly with the O'Rangers. Concomitant

I don't know if this is a well-known thing in the UK, but due to my tendency to have shows like Hotel Hell and The Hotel Inspector on in the background, YouTube recently suggested a series called The Hotel by "Reel Truth Documentaries".

They don't have the money for a Gordon Ramsay or even an Alex Polizzi, so they send a man called Mark to rescue one of those old-fashioned seaside family hotels in Torquay called The Cavendish.

What makes this show so remarkable is that it is intended to be a Hotel Hell type show, but Mark is a man out of time. Obviously the ex-entertainment director at a Butlins during the 70s and 80s, he talks about how many hotels he has bankrupted and sees this opportunity as his way back to success.

So while Ramsay might work with the chef on a lunch menu to boost revenue while they renovate their rooms, and Polizzi might hire a branding company to work with the hotel owner on revamping their image, Mark brings in a friend of his who has two synthesizers to do a night of entertainment for a room full of very old people, ending in a electronic version of Land of Hope and Glory. And the next day he's on the phone to the local paper telling them "WE'RE GOING TO BAKE THE BIGGEST SCONE IN ENGLAND."

QuoteMark secretly announces to the press that in 48 hours' time the Cavendish will make a record-breaking attempt to bake Britain's biggest scone. However, the news is out before the entertainments manager has asked for permission or told head chef Gerry that he will be responsible for preparing the giant cake. And hotel owner Vicky is convinced it's all a recipe for disaster, because baking - on any scale - is not Gerry's forte.

There is so much more. The bar manager who hates Mark on sight for taking over his bingo night with all of 5 people ("6 and 9 ... 69 ... that's a memory ... time for a break in the bingo ... I'm going for a cigarette.") The posh man and his son who check in, clearly at the behest of the producers, to act like twats and look down on the poors they're forced to mingle with, but who actually end up being quite nice and decent.

I'm two episodes in. Think I might press on with it.

Absolutely loving this. First episode was heartbreaking stuff with Amos, the second (I may be watching out of order) was the couple on their first night away from the babies in 18 months. Knocked it out of the park. The Polish chap who rolled in to work battered for the third time. The Angel people. I don't want to give any of this away. The humanity in this show is wonderful and hilarious and bleak and tragic and I can't wait to watch more!

Glad you're enjoying it. Tell you the truth, I really don't know what the order is. The seem to have more than one series called The Hotel featuring totally different people, but it's good stuff!

I tuned out of series 2 (the one with Mark) after one or two episodes because it felt like they were just trying too hard. The series set in the Damsen in the lakes felt somewhat candid at points and had 2 or 3 genuinely moving episodes. Not convinced that'll be the case with series 2

One of the Youtubers I like, Rob Finds Treasure, just opens rolls of coins from banks, and tries to find rare ones. It's a simple endeavour, but I like how excited he gets about it (without being too over the top) and I learn the occasional interesting thing about coins.

Every now and again, he'll do a terrible skit at the beginning of an episode, usually involving some play on words with a sort of coin. He has zero comic timing, though, so they're always awful (but he really doesn't do them that often, so it's alright). But his most recent episode begins with, for no good reason, a rap about what he's going to do that episode. It's a thirty second look of puzzlement.

Been rewatching SciManDan recently because knowing there are people so wilfully ignorant and thick out there makes me feel better about myself.

Just random stuff like people trying to debunk Pi. Mental.

Whoaaaaaaaa

I mean, it's one thing to have a video called "World's Hottest Military Uniforms", but to actually go ahead and include a Nazi uniform in it, and have it in the thumbnail, and to know enough about how bad the swastika is to censor it in said thumbnail, and to have the K-pop types in it go on about how "it's so pretty in general"... I mean, fucking hell. Also, this was uploaded upon the start of this year's Yom HaShoah, AKA Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I find it a weird and tasteless idea for a video, but I find the whole K-Pop culture itself strange and alienating. I suppose it goes to show how culture-specific taboos are. Remember the novelty Hitler-themed cafe in Mumbai?

edit: wow, by coincidence, the article mentions a similar case in South Korea

This guy is brilliant. He's savvy to how scam calls/fake support centres operate and fucks with them. On this occasion he uses an old woman voice modulator and sends the scammer into an apoplectic rage. Very satisfying:
