Inwas reading a gallery type article of a father and daughter who took a photo together every year since 1980, and this was 1988:

Just watched Brave Dave's Big Fat Freight Hop which is in the spirit of Mission Across Wales. Amateurish and very much not online (pun notwithstanding). It's 2016 and he's agog that he'll be able to get the internet during the journey

Four half hour episodes

https://youtu.be/hUg0jFO7NTo

edit: earlier similar but much rougher one I just found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-FYjiGEtsU

Any other recommendations in this vein appreciated

Cheers for that.

I'd come across Brave Dave a few years ago and instantly dismissed him as on other videos he was prone to include footage where people recognised him and many of the things he did weren't that brave at all (just thought he was big headed).

However that video is genuinely good - love the never ending cycle of dodge security, find a suitable train, enjoy the scenery, sleep in a wagon/shipping container/bush and repeat.

I especially liked the footage where he's hanging off the side of the train which is going too fast and heading in the wrong direction to the U.S border.  He's wondering whether its safe to jump off and then a tunnel starts coming into view...

I watched his Thailand video and he states he uses the name ironically and he's fully aware he's not at all amazing - I think I'd just got the wrong idea of him before.

best one (after part one) since the original Wales mission. brave route. spoiler thought

Spoiler alert
i'm sure they get through the factory as we've already seen an insert VT of them crossing the motorway but christ how do they get across the railway?

really enjoying the Scotland mission after two parts. couldn't give much of a shit about his Geoguessr stuff (his age shows sometimes, he was next to a wall that someone had sprayed "UVF" on and couldn't figure out Norn from that) but he does make fun outdoors videos.

The answer to this stressed me out! I didn't like that bit at all. But really enjoying it otherwise, I think his editing has gotten better, and It's nice him doing it with a partner, great sense of joy when they make it past another bit.

Neomod

The next episode introduces a bit of tension judging by that trail.

"I'm seriously pissed off with you"

phes

It's all such wonderfully tame stuff (climbing over a fence, walking through a yard, crossing a road!) that he's probably creased the map or something

sevendaughters

I dunno if I mentioned it upthread but I think if you like Brave Dave but wish it was a bit more like the Big Lebowski then Stobe the Hobo is surely for you.

He has hours of stuff and I find him quite a quietly inspirational character who plays sweet piano over his videos and has a gentle and homespun philosophical nature.
Spoiler alert
He actually died doing a freight hop too.

.

Here's part one. He sometimes has a guy with him, and he's in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsgNTsIyu_0

phes

Naturally found my way to that after watching Brave Dave and watched everything he's done. I'm just left with the two feature length videos now. I found him to be an endearing and watchable character.
Spoiler alert
From what I read he was killed by an Amtrak Passenger train after getting stranded on a bridge without walkways, and got snagged and dragged under by his backpack. Something of an irony given he was a freight hopper and spent numerous videos lamenting the appalling integrity of backpack construction. Very sad indeed. He also sounded to be reaching something of a crossroads, talking about putting on weight and perhaps needing to reduce his drinking

I found the video of him sitting under the bridge, watching the cars go by and mulling the existential despair of being trapped between mundanity and squatting under a filthy bridge, to be quite affecting.

absolutely cringed my nuts off at the recent MAScotland

Lost his head. Gets told to fuck off home for being a pratt during a national lockdown, then goes searching for his little ladder.

Disappointing as fuck. Was enjoying it so much up till then.

Really stupid to camp in the same place they were spotted with an open fire, should have camped elsewhere once they knew people had seen them there earlier in the day.

And yes, pretty stupid to think they wouldn't get questioned at any point when it was that point of the lockdown. All that effort, and all the luck they got earlier on wasted.

sevendaughters

Yeah their errors are manifold - their stealthiness has pretty much gone to shite. On the whole I enjoyed it and I like how he isn't afraid to show himself as a failure. Too many self-shooters on youtube are in a world in which they are the hero and the winner.

Yeah this is a good point. He's not afraid to show himself looking stupid and silly. I was just all ready for weeks of this to enjoy.

In the previous episode they referenced Ally Law with the 'High-Viz and confidence' bit. I'm sure Law isn't the first to make that observation, but certainly popularised it. Law makes for an interesting comparison with the latest MAS. Regardless of the right to roam laws in Scotland, Geoplonker and his buddy committed/planned to commit several acts of trespassing along the way and all during a national lockdown. He has naively come to believe that his record attempt, YouTube channel and career entitles him to special treatment. He even managed to have a sulky lip about the farmer. Law may have committed many more and arguably worse acts of trespass, but from memory he's never been so arrogant as to think his hobby and YouTube channel entitles him to special treatment.

He's going to do this again and he's going to plan to trespass property again, and he's going to monetise the suspense involved in trespassing. He needs to stop kidding himself he's just all about an innocent record attempt

sevendaughters

agree. always suspicious of everything on youtube. i enjoy the voyeuristic aspect and i console myself that he'd never do a terrible crime for his channel, that he does have basic ethics.

You know in the Superbowl where they have a mini-concert at half-time featuring Prince or Beyoncé or [insert REALLY famous person]?
Well, it wasn't always like that...

Anyone else a fan of Stuart Millard's channel? His stuff is really good but gets shockingly low views, and I feel like most of the subjects he covers, namely obscure and desolate corners of UK TV past, should appeal directly to the Cab Hivemind.

You may well have seen some of his House Party Hell compilations, which do a sterling job summarising the utterly demented world of Noel at his nineties peak. He also does hilariously dry retrospective commentaries on various topics, he's just done a new one on Saturday Superstore containing possibly the most on-point description of Mike Read - "It's like if divorce were a person."

These are also good:

Freddie Starr's nightmarish quiz show Beat The Crusher
Royal Variety Shows

Remarkable drone footage of Great White Sharks here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ile5NS7ucec

Includes some footage of a close call with a surfer, and some gruesome footage of a shark eating a dead dolphin.

I'll definitely be doing the big shop at my local Edeka from now on.

I love Rebillet, I also love Edeka.

WhoMe

Been watching a fair bit of storm chasing footage, especially from 'infamous' events such as El Rino and Joplin. Big one-two mile wide bastards. This footage is fascinating, from the early stages of what turned into a huge twister that was notably intense. A couple of minutes in they zoom in on the base of it moving across the open fields, like some sort of sky drill boring into the earth. Gives a sense of the violence and energy in these things. Fascinating and horrifying in equal measure.

Yeah, big fan of Stuart's. Everything he puts on his Frantic Planet blog is pretty ace. He posts on here, btw.

Can anyone recommend any other YouTube music essayists in the same vein as the excellent Todd In The Shadows ? I think I've finally watched all Todd's videos and had a great time doing so.

The Iain Duncan Smiths' Hypernormalislandisation:

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riPeCe1gPvw

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYwsZVV0j3E

There are seven of these now, all excellent. Another top channel, palpable disgust with the state of UK society while always remaining funny.

sevendaughters

this was algo-recommended to me and I love it!

it's called 'What Makes This Song Stink' and it is sort of a light pisstake of the Rick Beato/youtuber 'breakdown' thing, but with a fairly individual and low-key comic energy.

He talks about Weezer in this one and has a very funny pastiche of Bruce Springsteen in it.
