The Old Skool Hardcore/Rave Tune Dumping Ground Thread-a-Go-Go

Puffin Chunks

Is this thread really necessary? No, probably not, but like so many genre's of dance music, I'm going to splinter off and do my own thing, which is the same as the old thing only slightly different and therefore it's the new thing.

Thanks to monkfromhavana for consistently posting quality tune after quality tune from an era I love in the "Does anyone like dance music anymore?" thread (as my Last.fm account will testify), I thought I'd start a thread which is purely a dumping ground for Old Skool Hardcore/Rave music. I have a tonne of this stuff, but always want more.

This isn't for House Music, or DnB or Happy Hardcore or Techno. Go start your own threads for that, but I think (hope!) this is a distinct and well-loved enough genre to get some posts. This is for Hardcore.

But now it does get a bit tricky, because where do I set the boundaries? Cross-over Hardcore/DnB will be permitted... I guess anything up to Omni Trio's Deepest Cut Album in 1995 is ok... ultimately I loved that album/those singles and they still have recognisably hardcore elements. At the other end... well what was the first hardcore tune? I have no idea. Anything pre 1990? I'm struggling to think of many? Maybe Shut up and Dance?

Anyhow, please post the artist and title of the tracks with the links. I appreciate that list threads can be tedious, but by being as concise as this, hopefully those who aren't interested can avoid the whole shebang. Also feel free to share stories from the golden era of rave.

Ok, I'll kick things off I guess...

Kick Squad - Soundclash (Champion Sound)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnNMgcsxQxg

2 Bad Mice - Illegal Subs (Krome & Time Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apt5l2Uzets

Altern-8 - Hypnotic St-8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIORaFITSFc

Urban Shakedown - Some Justice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3x0BMNy99c

Krome & Time - This Sound is for The Underground
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-93smJK2P0

Omni Trio - Thru The Vibe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rafk00iwSsA

Well, here's two of my all time favourites for a start.  They may be obvious choices but I don't care.

T99 - Anasthasia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx3LccRvidg

LFO - We Are Back

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYX1bHl8WMo

monkfromhavana

I'm really glad you called the thread "Hardcore" and didn't go down the revisionist routes of claiming that tracks from 1991/92 were "Jungle". I fucking hate that. As for the boundaries...1990 to 1994 I think.

Right, some tunes.

The Occupant - Introducing to You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfUtfL238vk

This tune's from 94, so it's probably a little jungley, but as it has pianos all over it, and has a great deal of energy I think it's suitable. Plus, i'm a sucker for that piano line at the start/end. It would have been amazing though, if that the 1 minute mark a stab pattern would have came in on top.

2-X-Treme - X-Treme Theme

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIIZh3L_xtw

Lovely, lovely piano. Really nice vibe on it too, has that kinda hectic-but-bittersweet feeling.

Boomtown Productions - When The Right Time Comes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7JhN-jYSX8

"When the right times come it will be dread for sure"

The Moog & Hardcore Rhythm Team - You're All I Need

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-QkFVWysDE

Top sampling of The Specials and some random soul or house tune.

Morphosis - Latin In Dub Major

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkCqkUg4OZU

Slightly different kinda tune, really good, but never got played. The guy behind this tune ended up putting together The Sugababes. I love the sweet little vocal sample and scratching from 1.40 (you can barely hear the scratch on the YT link).

That's enough for now I think, otherwise I'd probably break CaB with the amount of tunes i'd stick up.

Here's some potentially obvious but crackin' tracks:

All good 'uns. There's a really nice Hip-Hop remix of "Made In Two Minutes" by Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop era as well, came out in 94. Labello Blanco was quite a good label, although some people thought it was a bit cheesy due to the amount of chipmunk vocals that they used on their tunes in late 92.

The first hardcore tune is a matter for debate. Some will say "Radio Babylon" by Meat Beat Manifesto, others would say the Bonebreaks series.

For me it's out of SUAD or Break The Limits, both knocking around in 1989-90.

Puffin Chunks

Yeah it's a tricky one and probably impossible to answer seeing as music is naturally a progression rather than something that can be neatly fit into genres that begin 'here' and end 'there'. I've never been a fan of labelling music to be honest, but appreciate that it's a necessary evil (although it can go a bit far for my liking).

And anyone who would label this type of music as Jungle[nb]he says after saying he's not a fan of labelling music[/nb] either wasn't there or is an idiot! It's Hardcore... you know the score[nb]Yes, yes. I actually said it[/nb]. Although there are certainly Hardcore/Jungle crossover tracks which wouldn't be out of place here.

Anyway, keep these coming. I don't care how obvious or obscure they are, I just want to hear a load of old skool hardcore! Need to keep building my collection too, and it's a great feeling when you stumble across something you haven't heard for decades... even better if it happens to be a tune you've never heard before.

The Scientist - The Exorcist - I thought this track was 1989, but Discogs has it down as 1990.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbLZJHrkUZ8

Jonny L - Hurt You So
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4_t6IwfaDY

Quadrophonia - Quadrophonia This track did kinda go a bit huge and is Belgium, but hey...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PkD--DD0TM

Q Project - Champion Sound (Alliance Remix.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9QG6MXcXSo

monkfromhavana

I love that Scientist tune, always does it for me.

Zero B - Spinning Wheel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKc1Hppi9xY

Everyone always plays "Lock Up", but this is a far superior tune.

Cheeba City - Hardcore Disco
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7uKbg9xMiY

Hardcore outta Sweden from 1992. One of those big anthem-y tunes

The Rat & The Happy Hippy - Hardcore Rush
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebO9GYU4xB4

Really simple, short and to the point tune.

DJ Ileagle - Testify
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zuxz5yIhszg

The ultimate chipmunk tune, with a massive Robin S sample in the middle. Completely daft and costs a packet to buy, £35 at the minute.

DJ Trax - Infinite Hype
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQIQ3wpVnWg

Along with Hyper On Experience, the best artist on Moving Shadow. More of a Hip-Hop funk edge to his tunes, with loads of samples/scratching etc

Criminal Minds - Pretty Lickal Gyal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDzoD9aICI8

CM were one of the best hardcore acts. They were a Hip-Hop act before, then did the rave thing, now they're back to releasing Hip-Hop tunes again

Sublove - She Moves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWRok0CUAy4

I posted this in the other thread, but it has to be posted again. Love the cheeky little "C'mon get up" sample from the Empire Strikes Back. Then that amazing ravey breakdown.

Fuckign hell there are so many tunes. I've been constantly listening to this type of music for 20 years and I still find tunes every week that are fucking brilliant. Every teenager in the UK must have put a record out between 1990 and 1994.

Cheers monkfromhavana! I've just worked my way through your first list and I can safely say I don't own any of them, and if I have heard any of them then they have escaped from memory (not hugely surprising given my mental state when out raving to these back in the day!). That Morphosis track deserved to do better. Going to start ripping tonight.

I can't hear Genaside II - Narra Mine enough to be honest. I always liked the Genaside II Remix of Prodigy's Jericho for its cut and paste simplicity. I just get the feeling they got hold of it and thought 'ok... what does this need? Heavy breaks? Check. Rewind sounds? Check. Random speech samples? Check. Big minor chord stabs? Check. Ok, chuck that in the blender. Fuck it, that'll do.'

A good site to go on is Rolldabeats.com, you  don't have to join to view the threads or anything. They have tracklists of all the tapepacks released from 1990-present day. I do a lot of stuff on there spotting samples (my geeky obsession and one of the reasons why I fell in love with Hardcore in the first place.

There were also so many tunes released that a lot of the time they didn't even get played by DJs. Take Hyper On Experience (gods!), they were on a big label (Moving Shadow), made amazing tunes, yet apart from Lords Of The Null Lines their tunes hardly got any airplay whatsoever. Whereas you'd hear something like Edge#1 played 2 or 3 times for years.

Also, you don't get atmospheres like this in clubs these day, I don't care what anyone says. I have never seen anything like what happens at 25 seconds in since

Moving Shadow passed on "Hurt You So" after he offered the track to them.

Cheers for all the tips, going to carry on working through these this afternoon and post some more later...

In the meantime, this is what got me into hardcore. I was bit young for the hardcore scene at it's peak... however, I had an Amiga 600 and it opened my eyes. These (imho) are well worth checking, assuming you've not seen them before. This was the single most amazing thing my Amiga ever did. 880k of pure Old Skool goodness with visuals that I would not have believed were possible with a machine built in the 80s unless I'd seen it with my own eyes

Spaceballs - State of the Art
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPSst20JEcE

I think it's fair to say that was more techno than Harcdcore. This, however, is 30 mins of pure Amiga generated hardcore spread over 2 discs and it opened my eyes. Sure, it maybe fairly derivative in places, but if you haven't seen it then I think you're in for a treat[nb]although I admit that nostalgia may have the better of me[/nb]. Complete with mis-transcribed hip-hop samples cos they didn't have the internet back then:

LSD - Jesus on E's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x37gIahAtXQ

Of course (and anyone who knows hardcore knows this) the Amiga was no stranger to the hardcore scene. The aforementioned Urban Shakedown - Some Justice was 2 synced Amiga 500s, a mixer and a tone generator for the bassline. I actually have the 4 channel Pro Tracker Mod version created by Urban Shakedown kicking around somewhere. I might see if I can get it converted for posterity. They apparently performed that song on TOTP. I've never seen it, but would love to.

And just to include a genuine hardcore classic:

Satin Storm - Think I'm Going Out of My Head - or Nicholas Parsons as it was more widely known
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3CZX1IJVNU

monkfromhavana

I was going to post the Urban Shakedown Amiga story, I remember an interview with Aphrodite and he was still using the same Amigas in 1996. I think DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer were also Amiga users. There was one program that people used (notator or Octamed, one or the other) where everything was reduced to numbers on the screen. It was like looking at a hardcore tune observed through the prism of a piece of accountancy software.

I was also a little bit young to be going out, though I did sneak out once or twice in early 1994. I can't temember what got me into it, i'd bought Voodoo Ray when it came out in 1989 and loved it, but i still carried on buying shit pop tunes as well as whatever dance tracks had charted. Looking back I do remember my older mates having a VHS of Amnesia House at the Sky Blue Connexion in Coventry, and that was certainly the first rave video i'd ever watched. It was baking hot outside but we went o my mates bedroom and shut all the curtains so we could get the full effect of the lazers and strobes. I think that kinda set me off on the path. Then hanging around Bang-In Tunes records in Cov trying to buy the odd tune.

Shit thing was, when me and my mates were old enough to go to a rave, they all started listening to House music or Brit-Pop. Fucking idiots. Still managed to go to quite a few events though before it all went shit in around early 1997. Luckily the old skool thing had picked up so I just threw myself into that. Sold most of my records when I moved to another country in 2000, so  i've only got a couple of 100 pieces of Vinyl now.

It's fucking snowing and miserable here! The next tunes I put up will have to be a little darker to reflect this.

How rude of me to not add some of my favourites...

Power Zone - Addicted to Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VEPu_LjF_M

The Fat Controller - In Complete Darkness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy2CnWMFTXM

Ionosphere - Just For Me

Dance Ritual - Off the Ground
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu38PI-O2aY

Bizarre Inc - Such a Feeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egORko3cgAo

monkfromhavana

Some great tunes there. Addicted To Love was great, and In Complete Darkness was a big tune when I started going out, even if it is just a house tune with a breakbeat and a Janet Jackson sample. As for Ionosphere, if I remember correctly they've had an album out in the past 2 years, all old stuff with some unreleased bits n bobs.

Never been keen on the original version of "Such A Feeling", but I do like the Love Decade remix. It's more housey, with the strings from Twin Peaks on there.

The best Love Decade tune was one they released in 89, really nice Ambient House tune perfect for being outside when the sun comes up.

Love Decade - When The Morning Comes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdDUXbnuUHs

On a similar tip, but more uptempo were Dream Frequency. A bit cheesy maybe (but they were northern), but they were always doing PAs at raves.  (and good)

Dream Frequency - Free My Mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8b1TFnTYas

Dream Frequency fact time! Madonna was going to sign them to her label Maverick, but when she found out that the lead singer Debbie Sharp was pregnant she pulled out of the deal. I think it was the same time that Madge was proclaiming her devotion to feminism.

Oh, and bonus Karma if someone can tell me where the break used at 52 seconds comes from. Leftfield also used it in Inspection (Check One) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbCLbLmO40U- 52 secs in. I have been trying to source it for pretty much my entire adult life. I know it's bound to be obvious!

Dub War is probably my favourite tune of all-time. I think i listened to it everyday for about 10 years. The remixes weren't half bad either.

The "Derek" in the title of the SUAD tune is actually meant to be Derrick May. He'd been slagging off rave music in the UK and upsetting a few people who treated him as their hero.

Tango & Ratty - Tales From The Darkside (VIP)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp4mEG3PMWQ

Check out about 3/4 of the way through where it just slows down to Hip-Hop pace for some beatboxing. This was never released back in the day, it was only on dubplate, but it finally got released last year by one of the guys on B2VOS.

Swift & Zinc - Other Side Of The Moon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKPuzaX1NCA

Check out that breakdown at 3.10!

Torchman - Tell Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut5b3ld-gE0

DJ Mayhem - Inesse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_RnYcEs0qU

Co-produced with one of the finest engineers/producers in hardcore, Jack Smooth. DJ Mayhem now does house stuff as Soul Purpose

DJ Biz - Losing Track Of Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vooj0u0-_P0

Stay away from the LTJ Bukem remix that is nowhere near as good. Sample "Promise Me" by Beverley craven (as also used on Orca - 4 AM overplayed rave anthem). I LOVE the "now i'm right where I want to be, losing track of time" vocal sample - beautiful, beautiful, beautiful,. Sums up hardcore and it's use of samples, seeing beauty in the unlikeliest of places.

Sublove - Lost City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWm_CP0FiEw

Another tune that was never released back in the day and was only used for Live PAs. Got a release the other year (finally). The Lost City was the name of the hardcore tent at the Universe rave in 1993. Love the piano on this from 1.56 onwards. Rushtastic!

I'm not very good at Iding breakbeats, but I do know that Dub War uses a break from Kool & The Gang - N.T. The break was also used on Public Enemy - B-Side Wins again, so they might have lifted it from there if it sounds a little different.

I don't think it is, but have a listen and see what you think.
