I'm not very good at Iding breakbeats, but I do know that Dub War uses a break from Kool & The Gang - N.T. The break was also used on Public Enemy - B-Side Wins again, so they might have lifted it from there if it sounds a little different.

Sadly not. I agree on the Dub War track. It has everything. Still haven't sourced that break (it's very distinct, I'll try to wrack my brain about what else it appears in).

Researching a bit more, and Dub War samples the following (in case you're interested)... sadly none of these are the break.

Lafayette Afro Rock Band - Darkest Light (from 0.00)
The Step - Yeah You! (from 0.08)
Bomb the Bass - Megablast Rap (from 0.40)

Oh, and don't you dare stop posting!

Goops - Listening Distance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm7QdBWrAZk

Not heard that before, liking it a lot.

Just looked on Discogs to find out about them, and I find that Chris Energy is half of Goops. He owned the HNR record label, famous thoughout the old skool scene for being some of the worst produced records in the entire rave scene. He ended up releasing proper stuff on Reinforced, but the HNR tunes were awful

Well, I'm currently working through this thread procuring all the recommendations that I don't currently posses, so thanks all! Keep them coming.

Thought some people may be interested in a couple of 'hardcore style' tracks released by verbwhores.

waste of chops did my favourite track on HAHA Tape (purely because it was Old Skool hardcore, but it's also great and well worth checking imho)

TRIANGL (waste of chops) - Come Again
http://cookdandbombdcollective.bandcamp.com/track/come-again

And I'm somewhat loathe to post the next one, but I will. It's not a patch on waste of chops' track, and I wrote it about 8-10 years ago so I guess my production values have improved since then, but hey it's Hardcore. monkfromhavana may be pleased to know that it was also written using Buzz, so ultimately, like Urban Shakedown before me, it's hardcore distilled down to numbers on a screen.

Welcome to Children's Hour on BBC Two.

Urban Hype - Trip to Trumpton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXYa_qklKPc

Smart E's - Sesame's Treet (Joe Beltram Remix) - Never much cared for the original, to be honest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cajB6ZmdHg

Shaft - Roobarb and Custard (Dr. Trip and Bob Bolts Mix) - (Yeah, it's house, not Hardcore, but hey)

The Prodigy - Charly (Original) - My personal fav of the Charly mixes

dmillburn

Absolute classic from 91 and still one of my favourite tunes ever, Egyptian Empire - Horn Track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQCoDqv_5KQ

There's a pretty good Micky Finn remix on the b-side too but it's all about the original mix. As soon as I hear the intro it's a proper hairs at the back of your neck moment and I'm transported back to a field in Hampshire with 40,000 other gurning idiots at Vision. This track for me really signified the start of the hardcore split,  it blew my mind as I just had never heard anything as punishingly relentless as it the time. I still hear it played out occasionally -  it got a spin at Flashback in Brum a few months back and it sounded just as amazing to me as it did the first time around 22 years ago.

monkfromhavana

Today's tunes that appeared on my MP3 shuffle as I was walking around trying to buy washing up liquid.

X-Certificate - Strike A Dub
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk3Xm4Pqznc

Mole The Dipper - Ecstatic House
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFacqk2PgTI

Underground Software - Comprehensive Vibes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKNcL7lxBbA

The weird but at the start isn't actually on the tune, I think the uploader has added it. I kinda like it though.

Noise Factory - 123 O'Clock Rock

Vision was meant to be quite a mad night. The promoter, Chris Griffin, was a right dodgy fucker. He probably let the extra 15,000 people in on the sly (the event was only licensed for 25k). Weather was terrible, one tent had to stop early, overcrowded.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsfuByE56Ak

Chris Griffin had a habit of skipping out halfway through the night without paying the venues, companies he'd hired stuff from etc etc, Hence why he had to change the name of his raves all the time (Percerption, Mythology, Vision). He then set up God's Kitchen.

Vision was meant to be quite a mad night.

It was probably the best and craziest event I went to, even getting there was an adventure in itself with the police trying to make it as hard as possible with numerous road blocks, closing carparks and telling everyone it had been shut down before we got there.  It was of course ridiculously packed but we had no idea why it was so full initially as we had tickets and had been inside so we had no idea about people rushing the fences until people we spoke to told us what had happened. The rain didn't start until we were in but then it was just torrential, plus the wind was awful and kept whipping the sides of the tents up. People were absolutely caked in mud and the crush in the tents got a bit scary at times especially as it was a stuggle to stand in the mud let alone dance.

Other highlights included getting stuck in a portaloo for what felt like hours when completely off my mash as I was unable to work out that I had to push the door not pull it, a bloke dressed as Superman diving in the mud then hugging everyone covering them head to toe in mud too and the car I was in crashing within about 3 minutes of leaving the next morning (luckily nothing serious and the other guy was a mate of my friend anyway). I suspect the music was amazing but all I really remember is me and my mate spending an absolute age at one of the stalls selling those "On A Mission" type car stickers, captivated by the melting postcards and trying to work out how money worked so I could buy a purple om sticker.

Not surprised the promoter was dodgy - as was always the case back then I remember the flyer promising loads of stuff that never materialised including boasts of a "Hollywood Bladerunner science fiction film set" which literally consisted of a couple of old rusty scap car bonnets suspended from ropes either side of the stage in the main arena. The supposed "Roman temple" was basically a couple of lumps of polystyrene and there was no sign of the tunnels supposed to be linking all the areas, or half the other stuff listed.

Mind you promising stuff that never showed up was par for the course back then and every promoter did it. Not once did I ever get a free ice lolly or massage, "Full Free Fun Fair" at best translated a a couple of ropey rides and every single "fully carpeted, heated themed arena" was always just a crappy circus tent. To this day me and my mate still call every single room in a venue or house (no matter how small - even cupboards count) an "arena" in tribute to those old rave flyer lies.

Nice reminiscence there dmillburn. Can anyone recommend a decent book about rave culture?

More of a pictorial history but I must get around to buying this:

Wayne Anthony's "Class of 88" is a pretty good read, and he was at one stage happy for the PDF of the original version to be shared around as it was out of print. It's still easily available if you google it but I'm not going to link to it as it seems he's got an updated version out and I'm not sure if that policy will have changed as a result.

If you want to recreate the night by getting the tapes, don't bother. They weren't actually recorded @ Vision, but at other events. It was also kinda co-promoted with XL Recordings, hence the PAs on the night being The Prodigy, Sl2 and Nu-Matic I think.

Prior to the Vision events he'd done some events as Mythology. Check this set by Ratty, the chopping, the mixing. Superb.

Class of 88 is good. Also Terry Turbo's book  "Drugs, Thugs n Parties" is good if you can put up with what a dodgy geezer he is. You'll know him as Terry Stone, the actor is Rise Of The Footsoldier and all manner of dodgy gangster films. He promoted One Nation, Garage Nation, Rave Nation, Dreamscape for a bit. He lays into some of the DJs and MCs too which is a good read.

Liking those clips. There is loads of mew 1991-94 style tunes around, but none quite get the flavour right. I like these though

Wax - 6 A.M.

^^Thus tune is one of the few that does capture it.

Economix - Loops (Eddie Voyager remix)

^^ This one is a belter! Top piano

Warped Dynamics - Free
https://soundcloud.com/warped-dynamics/warped-dynamics-free-smooth

This is their new tune, maybe even better than the one above

Mark Pritchard's pre Reload/Global Communications genius

Chaos & Julia Set - Atmosphere (Original Mix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCkpPzpx_nM

This is what many people agree was the OG Hardcore tune - a US tune from 1989

Success-N-Effect - Roll It Up (Bass Kickin Beats)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DTUk-rUhEI

which was later mashed up by Carl Cox with Landlord - I Like It (Blow Up Dub) to become

A great track - their ability to constantly put out high quality material across various genres was staggering.

Uses to love this slightly more chilled out obscurity from Vinyl Matt in 1991 - Spanish guitars on a hardcore tune

One of the best producers, though he still made "Banana Sausage", one of the worst hardcore tunes ever made. However, he did make the Shaggy Rydims EP under the name Ruff Rider which is one of the greatest releases in Rave.

Ruff Rider - Move Ya Bod (Immense tune! Especially as the sample sounds like she's saying "I get my pleasure from E")

"Wait, as I reset the Atari!"

Vibes & Wishdokta - Obsession (Music's So Wonderful)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp5Jfckz8Lg

The mad horn noises are from a Nazi propaganda album from the war. They made this tune, Wishdokta asked Vibes to unplug something, he took out the wrong plug and they lost the whole track and had to remake it.

When I have a bit more time I'll find some links from some sets from my raving days back at Club Labrynth in Dalston. I was lucky enough to catch the end of the rave scene and the best nights I ever had were at Labrynth. A venue which didn't serve alcohol, so it was never going to last, but they had a good run of it. Unsurprisingly it was eventually shut down under the false pretence of the Council wanting to build a car park there. Of course the building ended up standing there vacant getting more dilapidated before eventually being demolished over 10 years later as part of the Dalston Overland development.

Clubbing died for me the day Labrynth closed.

I'm sure you'll be aware Monk but Grant Nelson (AKA Wishdokta) went on to be a massively influential and prolific producer in the soulful house and later UK garage scenes. In fact I'd be surprised if UK garage would exist were it not for him setting the foundations.

There was an ace thread on backtotheoldskool where some lads broke in there years after it closed and took photos of the place - proper spooky business.

Puffin Chunks

Just been hunting around for it. Can't find it though, but the pics are probably long gone.

I remember my first night there. It was their (8th?) birthday and the place was heaving must have been around '94! There were two rooms I didn't even find that night. I remember just following the crowd and ending up at a wall. The crowd had no idea where they were going either. It was certainly well named. Fortunately the rooms I didn't find were the house and techno rooms, so no real loss there. My abiding memory is walking through the tunnel which connected to the two sides of the clubs, lined with dealers just saying "Pills! Pills! Pills!" constantly. I think they even had a sound system set up down there that night.

I've just found reference to a film made about Labrynth called Legacy in the Dust. I have to find that, although it will probably make me cry! (http://www.backtotheoldskool.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=109105 )
