That wasn't an observation levelled at the compilation, the artwork just reminded me - because latterly they have become a visual metaphor for hardcore. But I wonder when/where that started, because it feels inauthentic.

I'd wholeheartedly agree. I think the smiley just became shorthand for rave on the covers of compilations of old skool with Ebeneezer Goode on. Then again, I can't think of any other visual signifiers of 'rave'. Generally they make do with airbrushed naked ladies.

I've become obsessed with a Todd Terry tune from '91, super simple track with an obscure Liquid Liquid sample, bassline, beats, vocal sample and a few sound effects - the arrangement keeps it rocking till the end.

Two books to be made aware of.

1: Marshall Jefferson: Diary of a DJ

An OK read, you get all the stories about the beginning's of house music. I found to be quite poorly written though, and seems to just become a disparate list of events and stories rather than complete narrative. It needed better proof-reading as characters are introduced twice and some stories are partially told twice. The printing is also pretty poor, with entire sections being repeated throughout the last 3rd of the book which really throws you off. All-in-all, worth buying if you're interested in the early days of house in Chicago, some good stories, but don't expect too much of a quality product.

2: DJ Phantasy:  Three Generations Deep

This is pre-order at the moment with shipping at the end of September, could be quite good.

Good mix that, can't believe I've never heard Sudden Impact – Game Of Love before, sounds like Kenny Larkin/Inner City but with banging breaks,I thought it must have been an obscure US release, surprised it's Flex and crew

Even better in this club mix

Just catching up with this thread and quite shocked to read about MC Eze Vibe earlier. I know of him from the Slipmatt Dreamscape 8 set and the Carl Cox Dreamscape 3 set, both of which are really good. Had no idea he killed himself while in prison for child abuse. Fuck!

Couple of sets I've been listening to a lot recently:

DJ Shane, Circus Warp - Castlemorton May 1992

A great mix of breakbeat hardcore, techno and acid. Really enjoyed this and I only knew one of the tunes in this mix ('Dark Star - New Day Coming' if you're interested)

Pearsall - 93-94 Carl Cox tribute mix

Love this one. A mix of the tunes Carl Cox was playing around 93-94, before he moved away from this stuff and became the House / Techno superstar DJ we know today. An accurate reflection of his style at the time which brought back a lot of memories. It's nice to have a good quality recording of a mix like this, rather than a crackly 4th generation copy of a 25 year old mixtape with annoying MCs on. Tracklist included in the link.

Catching up on some of the newer Manix material that I'd not heard before that are proper 1992/1993 style classy hardcore.

This is fantastic, has the "rolling" element of DnB, but unlike most of that, it doesn't bore you to tears. Great Mary J. Blige samples
