That wasn't an observation levelled at the compilation, the artwork just reminded me - because latterly they have become a visual metaphor for hardcore. But I wonder when/where that started, because it feels inauthentic.

I'd wholeheartedly agree. I think the smiley just became shorthand for rave on the covers of compilations of old skool with Ebeneezer Goode on. Then again, I can't think of any other visual signifiers of 'rave'. Generally they make do with airbrushed naked ladies.

After the Italo-Disco thread, I thought I'd post some early 90s Italo-House

Ferrante & Co. - Breaking Away

Step & Rhythm - Time Like This

Paolo Zerletti - Escape From Italy

Francesco Zappala - No Way Out

Class from 1991

4 Hero - No Sleep Raver

4 Hero - Ghost Stories
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q3Dad9tS3Y

I've become obsessed with a Todd Terry tune from '91, super simple track with an obscure Liquid Liquid sample, bassline, beats, vocal sample and a few sound effects - the arrangement keeps it rocking till the end.

Two books to be made aware of.

1: Marshall Jefferson: Diary of a DJ

An OK read, you get all the stories about the beginning's of house music. I found to be quite poorly written though, and seems to just become a disparate list of events and stories rather than complete narrative. It needed better proof-reading as characters are introduced twice and some stories are partially told twice. The printing is also pretty poor, with entire sections being repeated throughout the last 3rd of the book which really throws you off. All-in-all, worth buying if you're interested in the early days of house in Chicago, some good stories, but don't expect too much of a quality product.

2: DJ Phantasy:  Three Generations Deep

This is pre-order at the moment with shipping at the end of September, could be quite good.

A fantastic pirate mix from Randall on Rave FM in 1990. House, techno, breaks, hip-house and all points in-between

Even better in this club mix

Just catching up with this thread and quite shocked to read about MC Eze Vibe earlier. I know of him from the Slipmatt Dreamscape 8 set and the Carl Cox Dreamscape 3 set, both of which are really good. Had no idea he killed himself while in prison for child abuse. Fuck!

Couple of sets I've been listening to a lot recently:

DJ Shane, Circus Warp - Castlemorton May 1992

A great mix of breakbeat hardcore, techno and acid. Really enjoyed this and I only knew one of the tunes in this mix ('Dark Star - New Day Coming' if you're interested)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVhP3hMZK0A

Pearsall - 93-94 Carl Cox tribute mix

Love this one. A mix of the tunes Carl Cox was playing around 93-94, before he moved away from this stuff and became the House / Techno superstar DJ we know today. An accurate reflection of his style at the time which brought back a lot of memories. It's nice to have a good quality recording of a mix like this, rather than a crackly 4th generation copy of a 25 year old mixtape with annoying MCs on. Tracklist included in the link.

THC - Surreal

All about the floaty intro dropping into the stabs for me.

Lovely new release from DJ Vibes & Hattrixx, the artwork is a proper throwback to 93

Catching up on some of the newer Manix material that I'd not heard before that are proper 1992/1993 style classy hardcore.

This is fantastic, has the "rolling" element of DnB, but unlike most of that, it doesn't bore you to tears. Great Mary J. Blige samples

Manix - Too Strong For So Long

4 Horseman Of The Apocalypse - We Are The Future https://youtu.be/gvm7yNDhwUE came up in a playlist and I spent ages trying to think of the familiar sample right in the middle, turns out it was Michael Nyman from the Zed & Two Noughts soundtrack - lovely bit of sampling.

oh to be permanently stuck in 1993-1995

I'd go for 88-90 if you can arrange it. I'm available ASAP..

monkfromhavana

I'll take 1991-93 please if it's available.

Ignore the fact that this upload is by those wankers at Hardcore Junglism.

DJ Junk - Keep Climbing

I know DJ Junk really well, from way back when he was selling tape packs in Camden and Carnaby Street, totally eccentric but inspirational guy - he was the first person who explained to me how you could put a record out. Committed breaker from the mid 80's, I don't think I've ever seen him not wearing a tracksuit.

Do It, Do It is a bonafide classic. He made all his tunes inside an Akai S950 and bounced it straight down to DAT, probably still does knowing him.

the

DJ Junk's Breaker Breaks 4 scratch vinyl is permanently sat on my 1200, ever-poised for a twiddle.

the

This came on earlier and reminded me it's one of my favourite tunes ever:

      2 Intense - I've Fallen 'N' I Can't Git Up (1990)

This is a 1990 track, but listen to that riff, the layered breaks and superb beat edits. It's hard as fuck, I don't care what anyone says.

Apparently written by Aurelio and Omar Martin - ?

The video adds another dimension - far from being a latterday Youtube fan video, it seems to have been composed on VHS by a VJ from BITD (reuniting the samples with the infomercials they were taken from). Also, who's the geezer, a guy called Stina? Who is he, why is he so hilarious (and has seemingly passed on)? This track raises more questions than it answers, in the best way possible. I love it to death.

Came across an interview/podcast Jay Cunning did with Ron Wells/Jack Smooth in November last year, really interesting if your fan of jungle techno

Here's part one

Good interview that. He really did throw himself into that thread on B2VOS as well and remained posting until the site spun off into nothingness.

A nice snapshot of the summer of '90 in Manchester on this mix by Jay Weardon @ The House.

Only 45 minutes, but manages to cram in some house, techno, bleeps, breakbeats, hip-house and some bruising Belgian techno.

The main reason I've included it though, is for the last 7 minutes. One mix of Together's 'Hardcore Uproar' into another, then the vocal from Nicole - 'Rock The House' mixed in over the piano for a couple of minutes. One of those bits of mixes that I've listened to a couple of times on the way home from work today, that last time slowing my walk down my road to make sure I didn't get home before it finished.

Anyway,

Also, 'Hardcore Uproar' really is a fantastic record.

RIP Nicholas Parsons ;)

(Satin Storm - Think I'm Going Out Of My Head)

I was going to post that in the other thread but thought better of it.

the

Is it actually a sample of someone saying 'Nicholas Parsons', or something which just unfortunately sounds like it?

It's "people are passing" or "people are crossing" apparently, I can't believe that the synth riff at 15s hasn't been identified, sounds like an eighties Latin Freestyle sample.

stranger

Yeah it sounds like "people are passing", but it will always be Nicholas Parsons to me
