Just been hunting around for it. Can't find it though, but the pics are probably long gone.

I remember my first night there. It was their (8th?) birthday and the place was heaving must have been around '94! There were two rooms I didn't even find that night. I remember just following the crowd and ending up at a wall. The crowd had no idea where they were going either. It was certainly well named. Fortunately the rooms I didn't find were the house and techno rooms, so no real loss there. My abiding memory is walking through the tunnel which connected to the two sides of the clubs, lined with dealers just saying "Pills! Pills! Pills!" constantly. I think they even had a sound system set up down there that night.

I've just found reference to a film made about Labrynth called Legacy in the Dust. I have to find that, although it will probably make me cry! (http://www.backtotheoldskool.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=109105 )

Labyrinth still do parties, they're probably the oldest rave organisation in the world. Joe (the promoter) is a really good guy to follow on Facebook too. Luna-C's book, he of Smart E's fame, and owner of Kniteforce writes about discovering rave at the 4 Aces. The garden outside with the rickety staircase to the ambient room, the stairways that led purely to bricked up walls etc etc.

These used to be a documentary on youtube from 1987-88 time that featured on Labyrinth too.

DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer - Ganja Man

This is fantastic, it's three cracking hardcore/jungle tunes all in one. Going cheaply on Discog if you're interested.

While I'm at it...
DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer - In Effect

Big fan of this mix
Bong Ra - Ra is for Rave, E is for Ebenezer!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qenPs-Ry7a8

Can't really have Bong-Ra in this thread without mentioning his Glowstyx project[nb]although as I haven't listened through that mix yet, we might sort-of-have[/nb], can we?

It would be really handy if you could post artists/track names, ta! At some point I'll probably collate all the tracks linked into one handy, easy to access post and it's also nice to know what we're clicking on.

I used to be bang into Suburban Bass Records output.

Heres a few choice cuts:

QBass - Funky Hardcore
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ8bMI3qHKE

Sonz of a Loop da Loop Era - Breaks theme vol.1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjv6yx4NOTA

Austin - I Get High

The Slammer- Dj Krome & Mr Time

Suburban Base is a weird one for me. The quality of the tunes in unimpeachable, it's a top label etc but a lot of the tunes really leave me a bit cold. The SOALDLE tunes are uniformly quality, as are the Krome & Time tunes. There's just something about the label that I don't get.

This is great though:

Rachel Wallace - Tell Me Why (E-Type Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8CCMHbes1E

And some more:

Syko & Mak - The Syko
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44OSdzSulqk
(If anyone knows where the main "can I stay, or should I go" sample is from, let me know. It sounds like it's from The Thompson Twins or something).

Syko & Splice - Twilight Zone (50/50 Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAEMr60lBO4
(SPlice is an Omni Trio alias - Lovely vibe on this one)

Lemon D - I Need You (End Of Nite Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3VO3ffCv5A
His first tune, and one of my all-time favs. So simple, but uplifting and beautiful.

Cheers! I go on that site a lot, but for some reason I never thought of checking it.

It's great isn't it, I've wasted many an hour finding samples on this website.

A recent discovery was this

4 Hero - Mr. Kirk's Nightmare
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THCj2AJuNVE

3.13 mins in
Think - Once You Understand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH8go6bj-Y4

It's another fine day so I'm wheeling this thread out again. Oh yes.

monkfromhavana

If you don't like the SUAD cheesefest, you can always go with this more underground version of "Walking In Memphis"

Krazy Kid - Ravin' Shoes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAFI-X1sGow

Some rawness

Raw From China - In Love With You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAFI-X1sGow

If you ever wondered what Basement Jaxx were up too before they started knocking out house tunes..

Tic Tac Toe - Ephemerol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcEqaTleIlM

Bogwoppa Records baby!

Secret Squirrel & AJ Flex - Come Rudeboy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hONvYblcB0c

This next one is not as well known as Blow Out, but imho it's up there. Also it's an early T. Power tune.

Bass Selective - Jessica's Jaw

I was going to mention Waste of chops' track - absolutely brilliant. I love yours as well PC - proper authentic. Would sit alongside the best of them on any quadrupole Fantazia tape pack!

Awwww, you guuyyyyyyyys! If my main PC wasn't on the fritz then I'd totally suggest some kind of collaborative CaB hardcore project.[nb]Hardcore rave, that is, not hardcore porn -- a skin flick featuring beardy blokes with spectacles and phimosis would be just a little bit too niche.[/nb] We should definitely do it at some point though; even if we only get a few people on board, we can call it an EP or something.

Okay so being 13/14 and living in a small town in West Cumbria when hardcore was big meant that the only stuff I ever heard was whatever made it into the relative mainstream, be it the charts or MTV Party Zone or the kind of compilation that turned up in Woolies like the Kaos Theory series or whatever caught my eye on one of our family trips to Carlisle which meant I got to spend my pocket money in the Our Price. Occasionally, very occasionally, someone would get hold of a "rave tape", ie. a C90 recorded in some provincial nightclub with an overenthusiastic MC and little-to-no chance of ever identifying any of the music on it.

So anyway, I'll post a few tracks now and some more as I remember and dig them out. And this wasn't intentional when I started noting down tracks to post, but I've ended up with one track representative of each hardcore source, so let's pretend I totally meant to do it and it's a really clever concept.

From the charts: Smart E's - Sesame's Treet (Krome & Time Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqnwQiym0Tg

From MTV Party Zone: an awesome 22-minute mix by Coldcut (it's not 100% hardcore all the way through but go with me on this one yeah?):
http://vimeo.com/27766112

From a Woolies compilation: Cosmic Brian - Far From A River
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3DjLoj1NTs

From an Our Price compilation: DJ Rap & Aston - Vertigo (Q Bass Dark Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e715VhcTJ_o

And finally, from a rave tape, a tune that took me 20 years to ID: Desired State - Dance the Dream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77ImR7ky1s4

monkfromhavana

I've just downloaded Fruity Loops with the intention on knocking up a tune or two. At the minute i'm just looking at it and swearing, but it's a start.

The K & T remix of Smart E's isn't that much if a bad tune to be fair. Still fairly commercial, but de-cheesed.

Puffin Chunks

I'm actually planning (have already started) to do a mix consisting solely of (a selection of) tracks posted to this thread, so keep them coming! That said, I'm struggling to keep up with sourcing them all (page 1 cleared and counting!)

Things I've learned: Mixing T99 - Anastasia into anything = next to impossible. Solution: Open the mix with it.

I'm definitely up for a hardcore colab.

Some more tracks to keep you moving:

Shut up and Dance - The Green Man (Rum and Black Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqg2C9q3K3w

The House Crew - Keep the Fire Burning (pseudonym for the Production House label's own crew, and nothing to do with House music)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNJPQbh9Vsk

Nu-Matic - Hard Times (Love the dub vibes on this)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auv_hQ5HJL4

Wood Allen - Airport 89 This is actually more widely known as a house track, but speed it up a little and it's pure hardcore imho.

Other unmixable tunes:

Zero B - Lock Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVa1efCRa9g

The intro is all over the place, timing wise.

Satin Storm - Let's Get Together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DJWtERIVIA

This tune did get played out and became quite big, but the production quality is AWFUL.

monkfromhavana

A Guy Called Gerald - This Is The Right Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9nycDrTcIY

Beatmen - Warehouse Party
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAPBKu1LqQ

OK, so this is from 94. It's very simple. I love it. Samples from a 80s house tune by the New Deep Society celebrating the existence of the Warehouse  (1977-82) from where House music got it's name from. It just loops really, but I love the bit from 4.00.

Clepto-Maniacs - Eros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8EbCkzElrw

Everybody knows them for "Positive Feedback" (and the Genaside II Remix), but I always preferred this. More on a house tip.

DJ Reckless - Take Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh-FTdHqhEc

Simple, yet effective.

Hard & Pure - You're Everything To Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtavkumxZNg

Another one of those tunes int he style that I seem to like. Pianos, almost bittersweet vibe.

Hardcore Rhythm Team - Make Some Noise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHa1bSi2iag

"Milton Keynes make some noise!!!!!!!". Check also the cheeky Beatles sample halfway through.

Unoriginal

It's quite sad listening to all these. I was born in 1990 so missed out on the scene, and have never found a club that plays anything like this. If the quite a few people I know are anything to go by, there's no real demand for it, which means either cheesy 80s shit, awful chart 'dance' bollocks or fucking One Direction. And then people get angry when I say that I don't enjoy going to clubs because I 'don't like having fun'! Bastards, they don't know what fun is/was.

You're not going to get a regular club night playing this kind of stuff, it's mainly going to be one-off type events. I know DJ Lomas used to put on old skool nights in Swansea, but that's as far as my Welsh rave knowledge goes.

Some tunes for the day ahead:

Skoffin Allsorts - Don't Steal Don't Gamble
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87_xoIwScC8

P.P. Orange - My Feelings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BerhH1P3e4

On a slight housier tip, this tune was a big one with Top Buzz. Cant't beat it when the piano breakdown drops.  Quite rare I think.

Princess Of The Posse - Learn To Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRlwpsuKeos

Another one in the style that I Like. Great tune, and Labello Blanco was one of those labels around 92/93 that really had a house style. You can almost tell if it's on LB by just listening to the tune.

Sly T & Ollie J - Help Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY5AwE8wTnw

1992 anthem time! Some people might find it a little on the cheesy side, but it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

M-D-Emm - Fly Free
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcLY19k2YTQ

OK, so the vocal is a bit rave stereotypey, but it's a great tune on the Strictly Underground label.

Speaking of SU, I always loved the daft adverts that they'd stick on the end on their compilations. They were one of th arseier labels though (demanding money for tunes being on tapepacks, occasional threats of violence). Pretty much every tune, regardless of artist alias, was made by one of 4 people.

Here's an advert for their compilation, Illegal Rave 3

Given Bobby Treetops posting of a Red Alert & Mike Slammer tune, here's another top one:

DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer - Just Wanna Hold You Tight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqQT2G9gsqk

Chipmunks in effect! Amigacore.

DJ Massive - Fall Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO2TtN0SngA

Something a little different with DJ Massive experimenting with Hardcore at a slower tempo.

Brainstorm Crew - Pick Up The Pace
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H4MctLxIyE

Tune famed for it's "Change the track" middle section. Can you name all the tunes???

Nebula II - X-Plore H-Core
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ttc6yTyvRbY

Mental! Check out that breakdown at 3.00.

Kid Andy - Baby Stop Spinning Me Round
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6SGV5sTGqc

Boogie Beat were one of those labels where the quality veered from release to release. I Love this tune,  (from 0.47) the chipmunks, the strings, the piano. I find just really, really sweet. Especially when those chimes/bells come in. Some might say it's cheesy, but they're idiots.

Fugitive - Fugitive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QoYrrWhnZY

Top 93er here from Dave Wallace (one of my favourite producers, latterly of Aquasky). This shows the way to the kind of tunes LTJ Bukem was doing, but I prefer it over that wishy-washy stuff due to it having some bollocks. Emotioncore business.

Omer & Crooks - Let There Be Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7cKz8C0KeQ

This could almost be on Labello Blanco Records, it has a very similar sound to that labels productions. Nothing too clever, just a good piano tune.

Spaceballs - State of the Art
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPSst20JEcE

...

LSD - Jesus on E's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x37gIahAtXQ

Of course (and anyone who knows hardcore knows this) the Amiga was no stranger to the hardcore scene. The aforementioned Urban Shakedown - Some Justice was 2 synced Amiga 500s, a mixer and a tone generator for the bassline. I actually have the 4 channel Pro Tracker Mod version created by Urban Shakedown kicking around somewhere. I might see if I can get it converted for posterity. They apparently performed that song on TOTP. I've never seen it, but would love to.

I remember the Spaceballs demo, good shit!

LSD later became Spoon Wizard - http://www.spoonwizard.com/

A few corrections on Some Justice. They used OctaMED which not only used samples but also had a waveform generator which they used for the sub. It's a rather gritty sinewave, so they eq'd the top off to get rid of the digital whistle using a Realistic (Tandy) graphic EQ that Gavin still had in the studio when I first went there in 1996.  I'm not sure about the pro-tracker mod version you talk of, but there was a 1994 remix version out there on one of those amiga archive sites that I downloaded. It's ripped from the VideoTracker authored demo by Tony Horgan of, erm, was he part of CU Amiga or Amiga Format? Can't remember :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73T85GP93go

There is a mod here - http://blogtotheoldskool.com/?p=1582 - but I think it's probably just somebody sampling the record and looping it up.

Whilst we are on the Amiga...

OctaMED just looks like the most insanely complicated way to make music ever.
