OctaMED just looks like the most insanely complicated way to make music ever.

Well, it depends. It looked like that until I understood what all the commands meant.

c#3 << That's the note you are playing

00000 << That's what you are doing with it.

If I put 00C64 in there, I would be setting the note volume or midi velocity at 64.  Every 8 lines of the 'block' = One beat.

Found that Some Justice 94 mod being run in MED. They've kept the stereo split which is interesting...

What a tune. First heard it on a DJ Sy Obsession set.

..I tried to buy a mint one off the TCR shop a while back, but Rennie himself informed me the shop was now shut and I shouldn't have been able to order! :(

Some more from me:

Sub 45 - Feel The Rhythm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1khhmmBpnk

At the start I think it samples/Reips off the music from Escape From New York

Stop Press - Buckarood Boy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1khhmmBpnk

G-Force - Have My Mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTgtyQ49K00

Children's Stories - Chocolate Factory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIhkNGQJZUA

Willy Wonka samples are great. The only tune to use Roy Kinnear saying "You're off your bleedin' nut Wonka!" I love daft samples.

Kaos - Definition Of Love (DJ Nex Remix)

The 80s house anthem gets a makeover by one of Altern 8.

I like the Kaos remix, I've got a wicked Mark Archer set from Origin FM around here somewhere, I think I ripped it off Mixcloud.

The Chocolate Factory reminds me of - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIf1RkhExzo

In other news, Ricardo Da Force died recently...

I've got a sneaky suspicion that NRG was behind that  Children's Stories tune. It sounds like his production, and he did that other tune with Willy Wonka samples. Plus I think he'd had a tune or 2 out on that label.

Sad news about Ricardo Da Force. He was doing stuff in the rave scene MC wise since the late 80s, so he's probably up there as one of the first few rave MCs (not that he did much work in the rave scene from 1990).

Another example of why I love old skool Hardcore. I've been lsietnign to it for 20 years, but still finding tunes i've never heard before, but rock.

Thsi was the first release on Bush, which was basically a proper Techno label, so this piece of breakbeat-led Hardcore is a bit of an anomaly.

Human Resource - Dominator (Joey Beltram Mix) - Can't believe I forgot to post one of my favourite tracks... here it is:

Satin Storm - Let's Get Together - hilariously badly produced. It took a brave mad to try and mix this from when the beat drops because it's all over the place. It's still a classic though.

Have you listened to the Slipmatt Facebook sessions mixes? The tunes are really sick and that but there's interruptions telling me what I'm listening to and shoutouts and so on every ten flipping seconds. It's like being on one of the new tube trains where not a moment goes by without an automated announcement pestering you. Sigh.

I've seen him advertising them on FB, but they don't really appeal. I'm a bit of a geek so I get my tunes fixes pirely by looking at old tracklistings, then listening to tunes on that particular label. I'm on Parliament at the minute, which has always been in my top 5 labels.

On a housiers tip (splice is Omni Trio btw)

Jonny L - The Ansaphone

The story goes that the women sampled on the answerphone was his girlfriend at the time. I always thought he was a bit of a twat if this was true.

He clearly likes phones/answerphones... this isn't hardcore, but it was a track Jonny L did for a Select 'Future Tracks' compilation back in '94 and he'd gone all Big Beat... but it always tickles me the abuse he throws at the poor directory enquiries woman:

I had that tape too. The Prodigy's unreleased "We Eat Rhythm" (was meant to go on MFTJG but then thy realized the album would be too long for CD so they had to cut it and put on the edited version of One Love), and the amazing live version of "Impact (The Earth Is Burning)" by Orbital.

Some of the other tunes were a bit cack though (Transglobal Underground and that Eno remix of James).

I thought I might get pulled up on this, I added to the thread more for the story behind it, rather than an example of a classic rave/hardcore tune.

Yep, I think I've still got this tape somewhere in my mum's loft, is it worth anything?

Anyway really enjoying this thread, I've discovered/re-discovered some cracking tunes on here.

7 Euros on Discogs, so no, not really. Jonny L apparently went a bit mental 93/94 time (hence his only recordings 4 releases up to 1995), probably due to the drugs. Probably influenced the tunes he made though. Moving Shadow apparently turned down signing him prior to him joining XL Recordings.

Also if you listen closely to "We Eat Rhythm" you'll hear that the tribal drums are actually playing the guitar part of "Their Law".

The Prodigy - We Eat Rhythm

Also for those that don't know, you can hear tunes from The Prodigy's demo tape from 1990-1991, the tape that got them signed to XL on Youtube.

I always thought this sounded like it was produced on an Amiga, but given that it's The House Crew I reckon I was well off.... just the cutting of the sample "hardcore... we are hardcore"[nb]which in retrospect sounds like a splicing of the same sample used by Lennie D Ice in We Are I.E.[/nb] and the sampled minor chord stabs sounds like pure Amiga 8-bit goodness....

Anyway:

Have you been listening to XL Recordings "The Third Chapter" by any chance???

I always preferred the remix of "Right Before". It was only released on an American techno compilation back in the day, until it got repressed by one of the small labels who press up obscure old skool tunes.

It's not one of my absolute favs, but it's a solid enough tune in my eyes.

I'm going to go a little later and up the cheese factor by going to bonny Scotland. The Scottish have always had their own version of rave tune, highly influenced by Italian house and gay Hi-NRG that was huge in straight clubs up there when it was only played in gay clubs in London. As such it's very "white", very cheesy and bouncy and, well most of the time a bit shit.

This tune is cheesy to cheese factor 15+, but for some reason I love it. It always puts a daft smile on my face. There was also a video to it, shot on a budget of about £3.42 in a scrap metal yard that was one of the best videos i've ever seen. Not cos it was any good, but because everyone in the video seemed to be having a really good time and just getting on with it despite it obviously being shit.
