Kevin Gilbert - Song For A Dead Friend

And here's a couple more:

Raison D'Etre - Inner Depths Of Sadness (ambient sadness... creepy and so sad)

My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel (not a favorite of mine, but many people love it. A decent sad tune)

Conclusion: Listen to Kevin Gilbert. He's rilly rilly good.

Yippee, more KG exposure for people. I've now got Toy Matinee, Thud, Shaming Of The True, and Live At The Troubadour all on CD, but alas nowhere to host. Plus fuckloads of bootlegs. God bless P2P for giving me the ability to get my hands on some of his rarer stuff (rare stuff from an underexposed artist).

I've got two live acoustic versions of 'Song For...', both very emotive. The man writes a great lyric.

Oh yeah, people should check out Popplusone's KG page if they're interested in getting their hands on some of his work commercially. They ship from the US, but their dispatches have arrived within a week when I've bought from there.

Anyway, yes, people, go forth and check out the Gilbert or you'll have to suffer mine and Sam's perpetual rhetoric otherwise. We'll just keep starting KG threads 'til you all listen to us.

Songs of sadness:

Black Heart Procession - "It's A Crime I Never Told You About The Diamonds In Your Eyes"
Roxy Music - "Sea Breezes"
Natalie Merchant - "The Living"
Modest Mouse - "Alone Down There"
Yo La Tengo - "Tears Are In Your Eyes"
Tindersticks - "Don't Look Down"
Sam Cooke - "Sad Mood"

and also, one which I think Weekender linked (thanks!) a good while ago:

Rose Of Avalanche - "Never Another Sunset"
