Happy Talk by Captain Sensible is the worst sound ever made in all our years

Why did Captain Sensible decide to record that song?  Is it irony?  Was it just a cynical cash-in?  Never understood the motivation.

It was an album filler he found in his parent's record collection that he recorded while drunk. He was tricked into releasing it as a single by the record company (they told him someone else was releasing a cover of it).

Thanks Buzby!  Kinda makes it less bad perhaps, but I still don't forgive him for it.

I'm sure Happy Talk held some sort of record at one point for the biggest climb up the chart in a single week, or something like that.
Otherwise that would be a really strange dream to have.

I know Nick Berry has the record for the biggest leap to number one, so that's nice isn't it.

Jockice

That's not the worst song ever. However the worst song ever does have the word 'happy' in the title.

That's a great song. Discovered it via a Dizzee Rascal sample and listened to it on repeat for days.

Captain Sensible went 33-1, the biggest leap inside the Top 40 until it was beaten by the Sugababes in 2007

The Nick Berry record was a jump from 66 to 4, the biggest within the Top 75 to that date.

Yeah, Captain's version of Happy Talk is knowingly awful. It was a mixed blessing, as it financed a lot of his generally excellent solo career, but also contributed to his leaving The Damned (which I believe was part of why Paul Gray left too), ending their best period and leading them onto the pretty dire faux-goth era.

But it gave the Cap the chance to be a prat on TOTP on multiple occasions, so I'm good with it:

I loved how much fun Dolly Mixture are having in every one of those.

I've seen The Damned played it twice and it always goes down like a hilarious lead balloon.

Dusty Substance

I've not been through the whole thread to see if it's already been mentioned but Calling All The Heroes by It Bites ticks all my Worst Song boxes.

You can hear the disgusting empty tininess of the production from the very first second. It has a forced faux-stadium anthem feel to it, a chorus that was designed to irritate and, although I generally don't care too much about lyrics in pop songs, the lyrics are especially gross. As if the song wasn't hell on Earth enough as it is, the video showcases all that was bad about the second half of the 80s - Fashion, hair,  over-use of special effects. Everything about it makes me want to vomit.

Watch me now, Rizz off!
This is how good the Beatles were. They built up so much stock that stuff like this was recorded.

Bently Sheds

Reanimating this thread on the back of Stephen Duffy's work with Robbie Williams getting a mention in the 'Unlikely Songwriting Credits' thread. Out of interest/boredom at work I checked out a couple of tracks off Robbie's unloved experimental Rudebox album.

Fuck me, the track 'Dickhead' is utterly, utterly atrocious.
