Here's the gotcha I've been waiting for!

Watched it just then, really GOOD. had it leave it on pause for a few while and lower the volume at that scene

Glad you enjoyed it.  I still think it's boring, amateurish tripe.  Swings and roundabouts.

Freddy titmus, back in da house!

This is kind of just Horror Movies now, this thread, isn't it?

Incident In A Ghost Land, or just Ghostland, as mentioned upthread.

Absolute fucking garbage from one wretched end to the other. Repulsive fucking horseshit that seems designed purely to make anyone who has ever had anything positive to say about Martyrs or Pascal Laugier more generally look like an utter fucking prick. Where Martyrs was largely about fucked up notions to do with women and suffering, this is just an ugly, nauseating expression of them. Idiotic fucking tripe of use to nobody.

Await Further Instructions is a bit shit but fucking hell is it wonderfully fun shit.

Was quite surprised by Cold Skin on Netflix last night.  It's a great take on all those dead sober and rationalist horror stories we'd get at the turn of the century, like Hope Hodgson's works, Algernon Blackwood, Wells, and maybe a bit of Lovecraft's Dagon.  It's about a couple of Edwardian dudes fielding off sieges by hominid sea creatures (pretty much the plot of Hodgson's Boats of the Glenn Carrig, though it's based on a more recent book by a Spanish author).  The more scurvy and hairy of the two men has tamed a female of the species who he bangs every now and then.  It's less scary than disquieting, like those old books were, but I was refreshed by the total lack of jump scares and just general circumnavigation of the genre's usual bad habits.  Plus the barren Antarctic island whose only real scenery is a lighthouse, a whale skeleton, and a burnt-out cabin creates a wonderful atmosphere.

Just got around to watching Hereditary. Was there a thread on this? I couldn't see one. Holy shit though, probably one of the best, creepiest things I've seen for a few years. I'm kind of bored, burnt out on horror but this had at least three scenes that me do an aloud "what the FUCK!" which I rarely do. Going to watch it again soon, I think, must be a lot of things I missed the first time around. Good God though, that scene...

EDIT: Oh, there's the Hereditary thread. Fucking hell, wish I had eyes that worked for shit.

He's Out There (2018)

A decent home-invasion horror, that owes much to Halloween. In fact, if this had been the new Halloween, it'd probably be regarded as a modern classic.

Really tense, really nasty, but not really anything that hasn't been done before upteen times.

Enjoyed it though, and well worth checking out.

Saw one called Screamers (2016) last night. Awful. I really hate those videos where it's all peaceful and then some 'scary' face appears and there's a screaming noise. Apparently, they're called Screamers. I hate them, to the point of getting quite angry. Anyway, this film is based around one of those videos. Some internet company gets sent not one but two of those videos and they all think they're fucking amazing. There's about five minutes of them just showing people in the office react to them. Then they go to find who made them and it's just those screamy jumps until the shit end, apart from some really confused bit where they try and tie it in with the 'real' Jack the Ripper. there were one or two decent touches but, generally, a right load of poxy old crap.

^Ha ha!^

Quite enjoyed this on Halloween Eve. As you say, it is very familiar in it's tropes (you could predict nearly everything that happens) but it was effective enough for what it was and rather unpleasant viewing at times. Very old school and straight-forward, which I appreciated. I will say that if you're home is being invaded and a maniac keeps turning the lights off, don't run around beaming a flashlight - it's like a fucken tracking beacon, stupid film protagonists!

The Devil's Doorway (2018) is a terrific little film, the Irish answer to Borderlands - which is also great, mind, not bad like some wrong people on here said. Lalor Roddy is commanding as Father Thomas, and Father John looks... exactly like my brother, actually. It does a lot with a house and some good actors, and it looks very good. Just don't think about how Father John is filming everything so easily with 1960s equipment.

I could have sworn it was someone in this thread that recommended the newish Estonian film, November, but I can't find any post about it. In any case, if it was someone in this thread, thank you kindly, as it was a great, bizarre visual treat. Definitely wouldn't classify it as a horror film, though it has elements. It's just full of haunting and beautiful imagery - well worth a watch when you're in the mood for weird pretty arthouse fare.

Watched a couple decent horrors lately, both with cool posters!

The top film, TERRIFIED, is a fun ghosty sorta film from Argentina. Basic premise is: cops and paranormal investigators try to make sense of a woman's unusual death. The story doesn't work completely but in terms of tension I found it very effective and there were some moments that really put the shitters up me, especially watching alone in the dark with headphones on. Had to put the lights on the moment the film was finished.

The second film, CAM, I really enjoyed. It felt a bit like an episode of Black Mirror (I know this is a thing that is said too often nowadays but it's true of this) and I was compelled the whole way through by the mystery of what was going on. Basic premise of this one: a camgirl's attempt to rise to the top of her profession goes off the rails. I've no experience of the camgirl genre of porn but the film felt quite immersive and realistic in depicting it and it made for a novel setting for a horror story. The lead actress was good and reminded me a bit of Angela Bettis' performance in May.

Next up tonight is The Blacksmith And The Devil from Spain, which I have pretty high hopes for.

BlodwynPig

Cam was ok, but not great. I didn't like the modern technology noises all the time. The lead actress was in Black Mirror previously.

Is this referring to the "dinging" in the chats while she was doing shows? I can't really recall any intrusive noises.

Dinging everywhere - her phone, her web room. It also seemed rather sympathetic to digital prostitution.

I found Monster Party (2018) pretty enjoyable. Teenagers posing as catering aim to rob a party full of serial killers.

It was nice to hear the baddies cackling maniacally. Not enough of that these days.

Enrico Palazzo

Also watched Maniac (2012) which is fucking horrible.

zomgmouse

If anyone gets a chance well worth checking out The Dark. Audacious blend of a few different kinds of horror film and mostly pulls it off. Some great scares and the emotional elements fall just on the untrite side.

madhair60

Any proper mental gorefest carnage fit-to-be-banned movies lately?

zomgmouse

Luz is frightfully good! Plays with demons and a little bit of time loopiness. Shot on 16mm for a grainy pulpy vibe. Properly cool and only 70mins.

Supposedly Overlord fits that description, it was having trouble getting rated here in Australia.

I've been hearing that's a lot of fun; pure B-movie schlock.

The Witch In The Window (2018) -

This was alright. A really low budget horror, focused on a father and son's relationship as they do up a house to sell on afterwards. There's a witch who sits by the window, as you can probably gather from the title.

It's really short, at 77 minutes, and is fairly entertaining for most of it. Not a must see, but worth a butchers.

It's on Shudder, if you swing that way

Three buns, and a little bucket of water in case the witch comes close!

You're not selling me on it, there.

CAM was really good I thought. Simple and effective. I like that you still never really found out what it was that was causing the thing. And a great use of tension, a couple of unresolved hooks notwithstanding.

The dinging is just the sound that occurs in that environment.

And re your second point - the main writer was a former camgirl. And also - so what?

I really liked this. The way the witch was in the background for nearly every shot once they were in the house was good and the bit where the boy came back from the bus but wasn't really got me.
