Naturally I've known this for years, but nice to see the Eggheads document it as a proven fact.

Rather boringly, perhaps, the research isn't about games par se – but about exercises to improve 'brain fitness'. This is an area that is hotly disputed as some say it's complete bunk and the researchers here, are claiming that their work is providing some evidence to support the assertions that exercising the old noggin has definite benefits. Personally, I think that Engadget has missed the point somewhat.

Arguably, one of the more interesting elements of the research is the claim that the game is able to measure the player's ability and adjust the difficulty accordingly, so the player is forced to concentrate, rather than switching off (as one is able to do with some games when they become proficient).
