When was this joke first done in a film? It now seems to be such a standard in Christmas movies, that there must be a generation of kids for whom it doesn't register as a comic conceit, but rather the norm.

You're supposed to keep your eyes open when you watch films.

And anyway it is funny because it is an old fashioned or timeless man doing futuristic things, which is straightaway funny.

I can't actually think of that many examples of this off the top of my head, with the exception of Arthur Christmas where it is executed brilliantly, so er, yeah.
