Anyone know what's happened to TV Chaos

It's back up again. You'll need to change your password before logging in and the reset password email can take up to an hour to send so please be patient.

I'm liking it. Good that the bonus points system has been broken down so you can see what torrents are earning you what.

Anyone know what the Buffer part in the stats is? Mine is at 553GB but no idea what it means. I'll get a good look over the weekend as it doesn't work to well on mobile.

Not entirely sure but it could be the amount you can download (without uploading) before your ratio prevents further downloading. I think we'll have to wait until they flesh out the FAQ.

Gah. I can't seem to get back in. How long did people have to wait for their email?

Edit: "Password reset token not valid" fuck me

I don't know how long my first one took to arrive, but when it did it was only valid for an hour and had already expired by the time I saw it. My second one arrived in minutes and was valid for 2 hours. It probably depends how busy the server is at the time - the one that arrived fast was at about 9:30 this morning, when many UK users were probably at work and most US users asleep.

Bastard... I've missed open registrations. If anybody could sort me out with an invite I'd be really grateful.

NoSleep

Did they actually open registration?

Does somebody (3 somebodies) want an invite to ProAudioTorrents?

Suppose I'll need 3 email addresses (not each) so best ask via PM and if you get banned I'll ban Y O U

You haven't missed it - they've not opened it yet. The last message on their facebook page, from a couple of days ago, says: "Sign-up will reopen briefly in a week or 2 once the site is stable again." So keep an eye on it.

Also I wouldn't hold your breath for an invite, as nobody gets automatic invites to give out - they cost bonus points, I think it's gone up to 2500 points/invite on the new site. But I reckon most users use their bonus points to keep their ratios healthy.

NoSleep

Can we have a heads up in this thread when registrations open, please?

I will if I spot it in time.

Flouncer

Ah, thanks man. I'll let people know on here if I spot it too.

Found today that, to my alarm, uTorrent has transformed itself into "uTorrent Web" and now I don't trust it. What the fuck is it? What should I use instead for Mac?

Did you solve this, I get some bollocks 500 error. I checked the mail I used is correct. I don't even get one sent. Don't tell me, help is on IRC?

Not derail the thread, but what's the benefit to using a private torrent site when there's any number of public ones and the downloads are peer to peer? What am I missing?

I have hard drives full of stuff from private sites like TvChaos that I would never have got anywhere else. Been using them for probably 15 odd years and they've been incredibly useful.

Couldn't the same torrent file be shared on a public tracker? I don't get what the privacy brings...

Sorry, I've only just seen this. I got it but it took ages.

Privacy also brings some security and people keep seeding the same torrents for years, so it grows into a library. Also members that don't help out and just hit and run, then delete from their drive don't build up a decent ratio and get kicked. I belong to a couple of invite only sites for over ten years and I've kept every torrent I've downloaded going. I think every person I've given an invite to has been kicked after a few months, so I've stopped giving them out. One of the sites I belong to isn't even allowing new members anymore.

Ah, I didn't know it was possible to monitor who is doing the seeding of a particular torrent. How does that work? I presume based on IP/MAC addresses given that you don't need to login to torrent clients.

Thanks, I'll try again.

Private trackers often force you to maintain close to 1:1 download to upload but in return they have hard to find stuff seeded for a long time.

In addition to what NoSleep said, in a word, reliability.

The files are always pure. Requests are filled because it's a closed community. There seem to be legal implications also (maybe just in the US though maybe UK ISPs can pick up stuff). You can always get a seed, people tend to give more of a fuck in a closed community.

One really lovely trait on private trackers is individual users actively curating stuff. One place has an utterly fantastic Halloween thread going, for example. Quite a lot of what I watch or consume is shaped this way: torrents themselves are a method but with a private community attached you get a lot more shared experiences, discussion from users who have a stake in it to some extent, and the natural outcome of consuming so much quality: wanting to explore it with others, wanting to find more, and wanting to keep the good ship sailing.

My actual online home, if anything is, doesn't even like its name spoken, so I won't. I won't lie: I flat out love the community there, for way beyond merely file acquisition reasons, largely because there's a certain mentality that's almost socialist - nobody is kept in place by stupid rules about ratio, but because without a good number of people pitching in, the operation ceases to function.

I wouldn't touch a public tracker for a multitude of reasons. But I expect the biggest is because I've been spoiled. Imagine CaB discussion with the subject matter obtainable in the post itself. There's several draws to that. Perhaps I am lucky my idea of a "private tracker" is a pseudo darknet community as rich and loyal as you get here, versus, say, the Dime model.

I'm sorry, but if you need rules to enforce sharing, it is flawed in principle, although obviously works with today's broadband speeds. Hence why you end up with models such as paying for ratio, multiple accounts or other forms of disloyalty because it's just some fuckin tip to rinse because there's fuck all else there and you only use it when you need to, hence few return visits, meaning no community or prospect of one, and the worst aspect of a public tracker in my book, the sheer temporaryness, unguided and simply awaiting targeting by whatever powers be, and who knows how committed the operators are? I'm surely sounding fanatic by now.

... I've written a love letter for my pirate ship, haven't I?

Utter Shit

Waffles isn't showing any signs of re-emerging - anyone recommend a good private music site?

Also, am I being thick or is there no method of filtering torrents on TV Chaos any more? I just logged in for the first time since whatever happened a while back, and it's a mess - is that just a consequence of whatever happened, or is it just the way things are now?

Click "Filters" at the top right of the torrents list. There's loads of ways to filter them.

There is but they rely on the torrents being tagged correctly and I'm not sure that's currently happening consistently.

Malcy

Anyone been using TvChaos much? After weeks of trying on and off I finally got a torrent to download yesterday. It's a nightmare trying to connect to the tracker as apparently it keeps overloading.

I much preferred the old site layout. Don't like the new one very much.

Early days I know but hopefully it gets back to normal over time. It was such a good source of rare stuff.
