Quote from: "Purple Tentacle"I don't have the stomach to argue with the multitude of Firefox evangelists here, but I've been using Opera for a year, tried Firefox and found that it could use java.  So I stuck with Opera.

fixed that for ya

:P

sorry, i like opera too but ....(and i'll concede in advance i haven't tried the latest round, but the last version i treid used to render more than a few pages oddly (i.e. like with centred text etc))

SNG: My god that's fantastic! A million thanks...

There's only one thing to do in a situation like this, post a nice duck:

Also, thanks again freecheese!

Edit:

Sorry, I'm a complete n00b at C++ (been at it a few hours over the last couple of weekends)...

SNG: When I complile main.cpp it's giving errors along the lines of cin and cout not being recognised, even though the right libraries are included.

error C2065: 'cout' : undeclared identifier

and compiling the other .cpp gives no errors but when you built it it gives:

fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Hmm... sounds like a compiler configuration problem, since main.cpp and resizeConsole.cpp both only use standard headers. You need to set up the compiler to link to the appropriate libraries. Could be complicated. What are you compiling with atm? (PM me if it's of, um, dubious provenance...)

Quote from: "Timmay"Unfortunately a lot of other sites simply won't work with anything other than IE, although this is changing. Natwest online banking only ever used to work with IE - it would tell you to fuck off with anything else - but it does now work with Firefox. Albeit slightly clunkily.

Yeah, jobcentreplus.gov.uk doesn't work with Firefox, which really fucks me off.

I'm just writing a very simple programme for work where it asks a series of yes-no questions then displays a result, it should be useful for training a load of new people we're taking on soon*.

I can get around this conole window size problem just by running the programme from a .bat and altering the window size manually (hopefully NT and 2k saves these changes like XP), I was just wondering if there was a more "elegant" way of doing this (i.e. getting the programme to do it). The code you made has taught me some interesting new stuff though so thanks again.

*my reasoning being that  the head of the department got where he is by writing a bit of VB for the company.

I know part of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) says that services provided via the web should be accessible on any device, regardless of platform or software choice. This is of course aimed at improving web accessibility for disabled users, but it has implications across the board.

The WAI may not be law, but the UK's Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) actually uses the WAI as it's basis for judging whether UK websites comply with the law, under it's "Access to Goods and Services" section. I can't find the section now, but I know that this applies to services provided via the web.

So I would say that if a site only works on IE, and is only designed to work on IE, it would be in breach of the DDA. This is a long-winded way of saying you should complain. ;)

In main.cpp, you want to put "using namespace std;" after "#include <iostream>", not before. This seems to be how the MS compiler likes it anyway!

Aha! I'm using Dev-C++, using mingw - which likes it's C++ as close to standards as possible.  Will fix it

edit: Done and reuploaded. Damn microsoft, never can do anything right....

Bill Oddie

Thanks again freecheese and SNG, I've got it up and working now and am going to try and incorporate it into the main programme. If I'm ever in Wales or Malvern I'll buy you both a pint or six.

Not a problem as such, merely a question.

Bought a copy of Nero a while back - that Buffer underrun protection feature - does it actually work? When I use it, the buffer seems to just stay at 94-96%. Is it supposed to do this? When I listen back to audio CD's I burn with it I don't hear any problems on the disc...

Timmay

Buffer underrun does work - it's very handy. It basically allows the writing process to stop, mid-write, to allow the buffer to fill up again and the writing commences where it left off.

It only comes into play if your read buffer completely runs out, which from the sounds of it, yours isn't.

Can anyone recommend me a nice free program to convert Realaudio files to mp3? I've tried Streambox ripper but it doesn't support Realplayer 10 and is telling me to 'upgrade' to G2. I also tried mini streamripper and that didn't work either.

Okay, so I've got Firefox and I think it's really great, blah, blah, blah... but how do I install search bars like the "IMDB" search bar and "eBay" search bar? I need search bars!

Yes, I should probably use my Google search bar.

Rats

I've used this few times, sometimes it works, sometime's it doesn't. http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm You'll have to find a crack I think. You're probably better off waiting untill someone else helps.

Belvedore Jaffa

Hello.
I'm Big Jack's brother. I've installed Firefox on his PC based on recommendations from here and elsewhere, comparisons with IE and Opera etc.
I stuck a handful of themes on there just to test em out , and to see how easy it was to add features (very).

Had a shaky start, with back and forward buttons not working and scroll-bar missing for about 20 mins, but weirdly, these things fixed themselves. Can't complain...
I'm liking being able to drag and drop bookmarks (favourites) to the shortcut toolbar thingy, and the tabbed pages thing will probably be essential once I get used to it.

My question for you Firefox nobbers is, what extensions (add-ins / plug-ins) do you use? There's 135 available on the Firefox website http://update.mozilla.org/ and 214 here: http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/.
Gonna scan through and see what's what, but are there any that you lot find essential or particularly sexy?

As for fucking Casino Palazzo, all's been eerily quiet  for the past 5 or 6 hours.  Prior to installing Firefox, we followed some advice from a tech website, which may or may not help any of you suffering from it's evil grasp, thus:

Quote1. Install new version (1.98.2) of HijackThis from http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip
Create a new folder just for HijackThis.

2. Close ALL browser Windows, only have HijackThis running.
In HijackThis, Check the boxes beside the below entries, then click on "Fix checked" .

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Update4] c:\docume~1\billla~1\applic~1\svchost.exe

Close HijackThis.

3. Reboot into Safe Mode.....( tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key)

4. Make sure you set windows to show Hidden files and Folders.
Then delete the svchost.exe file whilst in Safe Mode:

c:\documements and settings\your_logon_name \application data\svchost.exe

If you can't find it here, you may need to do a SEARCH for the "svchost.exe" file , But ONLY delete the "svchost.exe" file in the "application data" folder.

The "svchost.exe" file in C:\windows\System32 folder is absolutely necessary.

Reboot computer

Download Ad-aware SE Personal to finish cleaning up.
It is critical that you UPDATE Ad-aware, before scanning.
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Remove all that Ad-aware finds.

Reboot computer re-run HijackThis.

#1 you have to install = all in one gestures ( a must)
#2 ad bookmark here
#3 ook
#4 compact menu
#5 gmail compose
#6 BBcode
#7 print
#8 reload every
#9 sort bookmarks
#10 text plain
#11 undo closetab
#12 gmail notifier

i couldn't live without those - ymmv

i'll not do a description as the desciptions more often than not are more than adequate. needless to say i find all the above very helpful and use them all every single day without fail - i have a few others installed to - but they are less essential and as such it a 'personal' thing.

Belvedore Jaffa

Ok, scanned the entire list of 200 and odd, and installed a handful.
How does All-in-one Gestures actually manifest itself / work? It says installed, but I see no evidence of it in menus / buttons etc

Rats

Big Jacks just PM'ed me, saying that he's right proper fucking chinned his brother, knowing full well that the Rats wisdom outweighs and overrides the opinions of everyone else. "Even though he was one man standing brave and bare chested against the combined might of everyone else" he said "he won through and secured the trust and companionship of yet another  fellow whore in need, let out a hearty bellowing laugh in the face of his enemies, swished his cloak around triumphantly and stormed off into the rain pissing over his shoulder into the wind which splashed victorious globules of stinging nector into the eyes of a myriad of twisted frustrated faces.

Click on the bit I arrowed and it will open up a new page with the engines things on.

right click & drag in various directions and you will soon wonder how you lived without it.

i switch on the trail thing to so that i can see if i've made a mis-click/drag of anysort.

i swap "load home page" with whichever action comes in the default "down" action.

that way up = new tab & follwed by a down brings up google.

all-in-one gestures is a god send.

Does anyone know if it's possible to encode a lot of avi files in one go? I have a folder containing 250+ video files, and I'd like to encode them all so I can put them on a dvd, but if I do them each individually it's going to take bloody ages. Anyone know a solution?

phes

Not really a techy problem, but seems the most appropriate place to ask this.

I am trying to track a friend down. It's only been a couple of years since I saw him, but have no idea of his whereabouts, number or E-mail. I have tried some of the white pages/searches etc. Most only offer you a preview of the results. He's probably online now, surely there's some way of tracing him. If anyone has any suggestions of how I may be able to this, I would really appreciate them, thanks.

PS - Is there a free elctoral role search?

gazzyk1ns

People have been discussing Firefox here and it's just occurred to me to mention Mozilla Thunderbird... a great replacement for Outlook. I don't even like calling it that, "great replacement" implies that it's the best of the rest... when it's better than Outlook.

You could try  http://www.192.com
edit: oops, you have to sign up and it's only free for the first couple of searches, use them wisely!

I googled and found that a prog called Dr Divx supports batch encoding.  I've never used Dr Divx though, only VIrtualdub.

Assume that his parents still live at the same place and try and contact him through them.

OK my sisters DVD burner has gone annoying.  It's still fairly new, but all of a sudden it's stopped writing CD's.  Apparently it kept making frisbies for the last week or two, and now today it's stopped recognising blank cd's.  I've been fiddling around with it, and can't get it to write CD's at all.  I tried upgrading the firmware, and installing ASPI drivers, but still nowt.  I tried burning a data DVD, and that seemed to work ok, and verified fine, but then it couldn't read it when I put it back in.  Any ideas?  I've tried a couple of different burning progs, i.e. Nero and CDRWin.  Same deal with both, it doesn't recognise the blank CD's when they are put in...

untitled_london

#1 thanks for the sticky - imo it was sorely needed.

#2 i always blame the media first - i've tossed 60 in a 100 spindle before and then burned 25 from a 25 without touching the firmware etc.

i've also gotten refunds based on that fact. if the guy in dixons wont give up the coinage. make the fucker!

they press the stuff by the 100,000 per day, they have tonnes (literally) of bad batches. get your money back.

i'd bet my bottom dollar on that before i suggested anything else.

try a new batch.... then, if no joy we have to go down the re-install the hardware route, but, in all honesty, i rarely heard of a burner not burning (espesh if its fairly new)
