Quote from: "swarfmonkey"Anybody know anything about laptops? The DVD-RW drive on mine has disappeared. It doesn't show up in my computer or device manager. Is it just the drive that's fucked? Or something worse? Are all laptop DVD drives the same, ie will a sony one fit in my fujitsu laptop?

My CD-RW drive did this a few times. It's not necessarily your drive that's at fault - I think a pinched cable was causing a connection problem in my case (along with a host of other issues), and a bit of Googling followed by prodding about inside seems to have fixed it for the time being. What does the drive do if you put a disc in? Does it sound like it's spinning normally or is it totally dead?

Can't tell you what other drives would be compatible or not - I don't really know anything about this. Just telling you my own experience incase it does turn out to be nothing more than a loose connection.

swarfmonkey

The drive does absolutely nothing, I've tried taking it out and putting it back. Nowt!. Windows doesn't even acknowledge it's there.

Wilbur

Sounds like dead DVD drive.

Sadly not worth fixing.

A quick scan on e-bay should price  replacement. Standard on a lap top- You jest. No.

In light of the above info,

I've got spare IDE DVD-RW's. Has anyone used a USB2 to IDE converter thingy? It'll be cheaper than buying a new internal drive ( If I could even find one) But do they work? Like this one

Marv Orange

yeah i use one from time to time. The one i use is a bit tempermental but it does the job

swarfmonkey

Nice One ! Cheers Marv

EDIT- Bought one now. If it doesn't work I'll hold you responsible for my actions.

Eight Taiwanese Teenagers

My Windows XP keeps teeling me that it's not genuine and I may be a victim of counterfeiting. In order to resolve this I'm meant to send Microsoft the CD it came on. Thing is, it came with my PC and I don't have it on disc. How can I stop these annoying messages? It's even making me wait before logging on now!

clareQuilty

I'm on a University network which apparently blocks the servers on itunes which allow users to view each others shared files (sussex to be exact) . I want to bypass this (apparently it is possible) but have no idea how.....anyone have any ideas?

OK can we please try and prevent this going into the "how to run our pirate copy" discussion.

It  is against list rules.

So with that proviso. Where did you get your PC ?

Second hand or new? All OEMs agree to supply a cd with at least a recovery XP copy on it.

Does it have a certificate of authentication stuck onto the case?

If it does ring Microsoft. If not then it it is probably a cracked copy and you were duped when you bought the machine.

You have several choices.

Buy XP.

Use another O/S.

With prices as stupidly low as they are at the moment, upgrade the machine for one with a legitimate copy.

Or search the web on how to get round it. Just dont do it here.

Have you registered/verified it online? I did it when I got my laptop, involves finding that sticker thing with the Microsoft serial number on it and putting it in on some page on the website.

We're not allowed to tell you how to stop it on here, but you're connected to the internet and you have google.  The answers are out there.

I bought a Netgear wireless network kit yesterday.
It's a DG834G ADSL Modem Router and a WG11 USB adaptor.
When I try to run Soulseek, my PC crashes as soon as the application window comes up .
As you can see from the Soulseek board, it's not just me. It seems to be a conflict between Soulseek and the adaptor.
I've got Windows XP, Athlon 1300 and 256 MB memory.

Any ideas would be great.
(I've updated the adaptor drivers and still get the same result)

wheatgod

I have that same wireless router, but the wireless bit is for my flatmates only - I connect using a cable.
Soulseek runs fine for me. Perhaps its the USB adaptor bit?
Also, check the router settings - http://192.168.0.1

Milo

I used to get crashes use a Netgear wireless card in my laptop (with Azureus rather than Soulseek). Solved by finding the chipset driver and using that instead - it was a generic Realtek set on there.

Unfortunately I can't remember how to actually find the chipset that's in use, but it's a line of enquiry you could pursue.

Paaaaul

It does seem to be the adaptor - Soulseek worked fine when I was cabled up and my laptop works fine with it.  I've checked the router settings and everything seems OK.

Edit - Thanks Milo , looking into that

Paaaaul

I've sorted it out - didn't use the Netgear software to set up and everything is now great.

Rubbish Monkey

Arrrgh... hello friends. My computer has just (well a couple of hours ago) crashed while i was playing a game and listening to mp3s. Upon rebooting Windows XP reported my second hard drive as being unformatted and being 49GB, where before it was formatted and 250GB. My mate hasnt answered the text I sent and im stuck for ideas.

Rubbish Monkey,

It sounds similar to the problems I had a few pages ago in this thread. Although mine were caused by changing hardware rather than over-stressing my PC. I eventually got all my data back (well, 95% of it) by using Easy Recovery Proffessional and treating the drive as a formatted one. It took a few hours to recover the data though. Scroll back a few pages and you'll see what I'm on about.

Rubbish Monkey

I spoke to a bloke in the pub, and he seemed to think the hard disk had failed. Seeing as it was just under a month old and I dont need to recover anything of fthere, I am trying to send it back to Dabs. Just thought id let y'all know.

Baxter

Does anyone know any applications that allow you to view torrents before they are totally completed?

Divnee Gan

If you're on about porn avi files yes. Make a copy of the file whilst it's still downloading (via eMule or Bit-Torrent) and stick it on your desktop. Then play the file with VLC from Videolan. If it's more that half downloaded you should be able to view the file, but it might be a bit skippy. I don't know about mp3's though; never been desperate enough to want to hear one like I was with downloading filth.

If it's more convenient (which it often is for me) then you can do it in Windows Explorer, you just hold down ctrl and then drag and drop it next to itself (or wherever else you want it, of course).

Yeah, I noticed that Windows Media Player handles partially downloaded avi files better than VLC before (if you've installed DivX on your puta). Dunno why that is, because VLC is supposed to be a stripped down, superior, version of WMP? I still haven't upgraded from version 9 of WMP though, incase it reports to Microsoft that I'm watching downloaded SouthPark episodes (etc.).

Related to the XP issues above, but not (I hope) a request for cracks - my copy of XP turns out to be non-genuine. I DO however have a genuine copy on CD; how do I apply that without either having to re-install all of Windows or maybe trying to run a Repair and losing God knows what?

El Unicornio, mang

Wonder if anyone can help with this. I bought a TV which, for some reason, only has one input for audio, which means that I can only connect either the red or white audio cable into it, thus I only get sound out of one speaker. Does anyone know any way to remedy this, with an adapter, or a cable that goes from two to one, or will I have to get a receiver to go along with the TV?

Milo

(stuff telling people how to crack Windows removed)

And the unicorn, I don't know about cables but you might be able to set the input or the telly to mono to get sound out of both speakers. Seems a pretty odd setup to me, that.
