Following Mike James & Thomas Barnett on Facebook...I think Derrick May's number may be up.

James was the guy who basically created and played the piano line on 'Strings Of Life' - he's never been paid anything in royalties for this. James was never really interested in a music career, and has instead been a journalist for the past 30 years. Anyway, he's writing a book about May, about his theft from almost everyone in Detroit, his musical incompetence.....but mainly, the depositions from women who claim that May has raped them, committed sexual assault on them and generally been a right old cunt to.

Normally you might be a bit circumspect about a lot of this, but with Thomas Barnett (who created 'Nude Photo' and has never got paid a cent), Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes, Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter, Ian O'Brien and quite a lot of other Detroit techno people all going into quite some detail about either theft or musical incompetence by May, and it all seems quite believable.

Ugh, reading this was a shit start to my day. Strings Of Life is probably my single favourite piece of music and May's body of work has a magic for me that only a few have. I've heard the plagiarism accusations before and I'm kind of agnostic about it. May's collected works have a clear single stylistic signature and throughline to them. The piano on Strings Of Life is a unique element in that music so it's no surprise it's played by someone else and it's effectively a sample - if he didn't have proper permission or give proper payment that's a bit crap, but thats the biz. The piano isn't all of Strings Of Life, although it's the best bit, and it's the genius way that it's all arranged and the sound that makes the magic, and the piano guy didn't do that. That piano line belongs there and nowhere else. As for Thomas Barnett I've heard his version of Nude Photo and a bit of his other stuff and it's not as good as May's.

Musical incompetence is a new one to me - his DJing always seems pretty top notch to me, and those tracks must have come out the way they did somehow, so I dunno really.

The claims of sexual assault are clearly something else again and if true, well that's fucking grim. He has a reputation for being a bit of a twat - I can live with him being rude to Kevin Saunderson, but a MeToo case clearly not. Never really had an artist I really like turn out to be a wrong un, hope it's not the case here. Not sure I want to dig into the details right now.

Can't believe I'd never heard of Lone on R&S till this year - lovely bright housey sound.

Airport style security on the door (they scan everyone's ID and will probably ask you to take your shoes off) but great once you're inside.

Incredible album from Yoshihiro Sawasaki - Dr.YS & The Cosmic Drunkards

The first track could be from an early Kosmic Kouriers album, but then it goes all wacky IDM, mixes some Drum n Bass and is generally an amazing listen

Insync - Storm

The following comment comes from Lee InSync himself, on the music released on "Storm":

"There are only 4 instruments in the track - all Roland, 2 SH-101s, 1 TR-808 and 1 TR-909. There was no hardware sequencer either. Everything was synched using the drum machine triggers. The notes were recorded on the SH-101 onboard sequencers, so the tune was very limited. Also, one of the SH-101s was not working properly. I could not record the same note twice in the sequencer for some reason. You can't really set up a more basic studio than I used for that track. The track was a production nightmare in reality. I am surprised it ever made it to vinyl. There is tape noise on the recording where the cassette deck level was way too low. But....it does sound like rain. It all went wrong but ended up right it seems".

prolly will, only going for Jeff Mills. Not sure whether to reluctantly drag a friend who I think will love him but has some kind of aversion to Fabric or go solo.

RE: housey stuff in general, been digging DJ Sprinkles's Midtown 120 Blues a lot lately, looking forward to checking out some other stuff

Fancy doing a collaborative playlist - not like anyone would care, but it might be fun

We could, but as your knowledge of the genre considerably dwarves mine, I'd probably end up posting the same tracks I've already posted in here :D

I would not say that - is there a platform/app to do this sort of thing?

Viero_Berlotti

I've been listening a lot to prolific Finnish producer Aleksi Perälä recently:

Some on here might remember him as 'Ovuca'. He released this classic on Rephlex in 2001:

Amazing EP from an unusual source...vaporwave stalwart t e l e p a t h

t e l e p a t h - Clandestine Love Exchange

The first track is perfect Detroit squelchy funk overlaid with some vape vibes, those squelchy basslines appear in the other 2 tracks with decreasing techno vibes, but still 10/10 uplifting music

Horrible remix of that first track on Spotify *sigh etc*

phes

I'm stuck with Spotify due to lack of time and energy to find other ways so sadly it's hard to incorporate a lot of this stuff into my listening on the go

I have enjoyed these by Special Request

Techno or House?

monkfromhavana

I'd say, house. I suppose it exists in that grey area that first progressive house and latterly, tech house, were supposed to fill.

Anyway, Blodders, here's one for you
