Was reading that Angel used to open up 1200/10s when he came on, pop in a screwdriver and tweak the pitch range up a few %. Apparently it was a recognised phenomenon that djs following him often had a mare and didn't know why.

I'm about a week off pulling the trigger on a pair of reloops after a ten year hiatus and post 40. Mid life crisis, I don't know, but I've been craving mixing for months

I did once own a set of decks, but really just couldn't be bothered with it, I'd rather just listen to the tunes rather than meld them together.

Fair enough. It's a thrill that I've not found in anything else. I'm listening to Daniel Avery's Fabric 66 which has been pretty absorbing so far. Nice blend of acidy techno, house and electro

It's probably just one of those things that, because I didn't immediately slide into being OK at, knocked on the head. I do remember the thrill of the first successful mix I pulled off (probably not a hugely difficult one [nb]A-Zone - Calling The People into DJ Taktix - The Way (VIP Mix)[/nb] but as the next mix sounded like a basket of ratchets falling down an elevator shaft, I lost heart.

What kind of stuff would you mix?

From tonight's compilation 'Futuresonics - Techno Vision 01' https://www.discogs.com/Various-Futuresonics-Techno-Vision-01/release/649108, an absolute belter from Dave Angel. I've just got told off for having it too loud over my headphones.

Cor that's good. I only really know Original Man as it was on Laurent Garnier's X-Mix. It's lovely.

I bought a double 12" of his after i got that but wasn't that impressed. Should give it another whirl (after 25 years).

Wonder if he ever played Moonlight Shadow in one of his sets. You would, wouldn't you?

I'm a solid enough beatmatcher, so the idea is to go back to basics and teach myself from the ground up to scratch, cut and drop. Not with the intention of focusing on turntablism and of scratching over everything, but because I want to (and used to) be open to playing everything. From Andy Votel type mixes to straight dance music. With only beatmatching, you're starting with a half-full toolbox

It's a different world now with all the sync, hot cues, loops etc. But I'll concentrate on the fundamentals. Sync seems a great tool but matching is half the buzz

Sync is a weird one, on one hand I don't mind its use as it's all about selection, but on the other hand why not program in some tunes, sit back and let the computer do it all instead of even bothering. I think ultimately, people want to know that there's a human at the controls.

Basically, as you say, once you've got the fundementals in the bag, anything else is a bonus.

Also, post some mixes up!

I haven't yet had the chance to play on something with synch. I have been watching a lot of live mixes on Facebook  and what I have seen is that sync has enabled a whole generation of DJs be ready to stand and play music seamlessly without obvious nightmares much sooner than previous generations. But they haven't developed any of the skills that would traditionally have developed alongside beatmatching and be more advanced by the time a DJ felt accomplished enough to perform. So there's a lot of people who can't select music well  (or have poor music collections), don't understand the structure of the music they're playing, haven't developed the dozens of tricks and techniques that DJs use to work with challenging transitions and be able to control energy and variety. So there's a lot of clueless beginners with a veneer of accomplishment locked into soulless chuggathons that go nowhere and say nothing. On the other hand, you have former DMC champions like Craze who have taken sync and used it to eliminate the time required to match, and are doing stuff like this

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9CKghsrcJpE
(not infallible apparently as he trainwrecks it at 01:00:30 which wipes the smile off his face for a few minutes)

I can't see me getting on with sync as from a personal point of view, a great part of the thrill is in knowing it could go tits up at any second. That's what makes it exhilarating when it's locked in. I don't think the audience cares that much though, unless they're specifically there to see an old school event.

Sorry, sidetracking techno talk a bit here

Cool, I'll give it a listen.

It's a bit more downtempo compared to Dream Injection 6, which is probably the best in the series (but features a mixture of styles, breaks, drum n bass, techno trance; 5 is more consistent in style).

Unreal, sublime, cosmic, balearic, techno, best track of the last 1000 years?

Never heard that before, very nice. The most unreal, sublime, cosmic, balearic, techno, best track of the last 1000 years title of course goes to Todd Terje's mix of Balearic Incarnation.

Lovely tune that, the UK could hit it hard in the early 80's on the NY dancefloor

Powerline - Double Journey

I have heard that, maybe not that version, but a more polished version? Excellent stuff

House, not techno, but this track is on a Spencer Kincy mix I'm listening to and it's definitely the moment where you're like "oh fuck, this mix is good!" https://youtu.be/bJeZzeRVX0k

There's quite a lot of versions around, the original is just called Journey and also came out on the US Prelude label - I love the dubbed out piano on it, it's produced by the same guys that did Atmosfear- Dancing In Outer Space and early Level 42.

Nice article here.

I thought he was basically meant to be homeless and with mental health issues now? Or was that all just a load of bollocks?

QuoteJust take the tragic story of US house producer Gemini, aka. Spencer Kincy. Luke Solomon talks about Kincy's problem in a Resident Advisor Exchange podcast, during which he describes how Kincy has 'decided to opt out of society, to not have a fixed abode, not be a part of the music industry anymore and he doesn't want to be a part of this world anymore - that's his choice and mental illness and that, are a factor.' Although, this is a very drastic example, it only goes to highlight the extent to which mental illness can impact an individual's life. Something, which were it not to have been brought to our attention, could have easily slipped under the radar.

The mix is from 1996, a year or two ago it started gaining traction on rateyourmusic

From what I read he basically vanished asides from some attempt at a lawsuit against the CIA or some shit? I don't know much about him at all though, what's worth checking out beyond that mix?

BlodwynPig

The four Gemini albums are well worth the listen.

Discogs says "he's alive and well and wants his music to be heard"...but that could have been written a decade ago

edit: from his artist edit page on discogs - 2 years ago

Incidentally: glad to hear that he is out of trouble, and backed by a trusted label owner a/o manager (Another Day Records?) if the case. So, simply, glad he's back in the game, back in business, and that he is fine, if so. :)

Sorry I don't know if this is Techno because I lost track of all the genres in about 1998, but the new Forrest Drive West track is brilliant.

Have we discussed The Tunnel on here? I realise that as much as I like the idea of techno I am not really arsed about individual tracks and just love sets.

The Tunnel is a series of gigs from Studio Brussel. I apologise in advance for only posting sets from incredibly good looking women but when the techno is this great it's a sacrific you have to make I am afraid.

I'm sure there was an Ellen Allien one too but can't find the link.

Absolutely awesome stuff. Lens especially is a brilliant DJ playing some of the hardest techno you will hear.
