I've been enjoying techno stalwart Oliver Ho's recent EBM / industrial stuff under the alias Broken English Club. The recent album 'Suburban Hunting' is real good. The E.P. on the Jealous God label was also great fun: check this fantastic video/track combo for the track 'Plastic Bag'.

All this Dan Curtin talk made me get Web of Life out again. Fuck it's good.

First track - love the synth at 4:20 particularly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEgfb-ca6Z8

Could be UR at their best

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1k2y3IY_90

Third Eye Foundation sounds on this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JFOl_oYqnM

This, at 2:15. Techno is the music you can really see, at its best. (yeah, I know, twat).

Those X-Mix CDs introduced me to loads of amazing stuff - particularly Laurent Garnier's. The best UR and Derrick May tracks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7gK6UuSQ10

I also remember John Peel playing this, when i was probably listening out for a Bogshed session or something, and although i liked a bit of hip hop this sounded so alien and incredible.

So there's my trip down memory lane. Sorry about that.

That first track is a banger. I have fond memories of listening to this in 1999 in my mate's flat on his CD player over a righteous pair of massive 400 watt speakers driven by a lovely Matrix amp. The sound is quite naive and raw and a bit offensive at first in my view. It's quite harsh and abrasive by today's standards. But the sheer strength of the melodies and overall musicianship is just overwhelming. Fantastic synth work. It wouldn't be right to do down the beats though, they are pretty sublime in places. Nice acid house vibes.

I tell you what, this is a cunt to get on t'mp3. Frustrating for such a good record.

A timeless classic from one of the greatest musical collectives ever, regardless of genre. Genuinely uplifting, gives me shivers, a powerful tune with a powerful sentiment.

Uplifting, melodic progressive house from 2001. God I wish I could find more stuff like this.

Crack Mix 105 - DJ Bone

I listened to this on the bus to work yesterday and was floating.

One of the best techno mixes I've heard since his Subject Detroit one from 2000.

The fact most of the records he plays are his own makes it more incredible.

i like their series of mixes that start with Gnod, then Norman Nodge, then Hodge. Was that intentional?

Abstract thought - Bermuda triangle

Out of all the James Stinson aliases; Drexciya, Lab Rat XL, Shifted Phases, The Other People Place, Transllusion and Elecktroids. This one doesn't get enough attention.

I was listening to that the other day - it's great. I've been loving Der Zyklus' Elektronisches Zeitecho too.

The music we lost with Stinsons passing still saddens me. How many other artists have died when in their absolute prime. Releasing albums on multiple labels left and right.

I've been listening to this Marco Passarani - Sullen Look album from 2005 again and theres not a single bad song on there. From start to finish just amazing production abilities. Disappointing that he hasn't released anything in a number of years now.

Der Zyklus is incredible. I'll post a track later that I think is close to the pinnacle

BlodwynPig

Here it is:

Der Zyklus - Formenverwandler

Melancholic electro, should have been on the X-files soundtrack. (Shapeshifter episode)

More melancholic techno

Future Beat Alliance - Void

Matthew Puffett in his Mode-M guise

Mode-M - Space Based

Sensurreal - Neo Cortex

(there must be other Sensurreal fans on here)

...and Gerd

Gerd - For 12 Minutes She Danced with An Alien

(saw this 12" in a shop in Edinburgh a few weeks ago, made the crap decision to save money)

EDIT: its ok, Discogs says I already own the original (Arkest Blade EP), it was the 2010 remix EP that I must have seen

Russ Gabriel - Airborne

Probably the defining techno moment for me when I first heard this in 1996.

Der Zyklus - Formenverwandler

That's the stuff! Richie Hawtin deploys it to a very potent (but all too brief) effect in the middle of his second DE9 mix too.

This is technically a Chicago House record but I reckon anyone on this thread could appreciate it. Genius track that shamefully passed me by (despite being about 30 years old) till its re-release recently (on this: https://www.discogs.com/Jerome-Derradji-Kstarke-Records-The-House-That-Jackmaster-Hater-Built-Pt-1/release/6301009 ):

Took a punt on this when it first came out and I found it in a bargain bin section at Windows in Newcastle. They had loads of great techno CDs hiding between the dross. Richard Brown's Cherry Bomb - electronics for dogs being perhaps the greatest find

J Tijn - HLD (Pris Remix) (2016)

Slow build up. Atmospheric, winter nights, people following you home.

Anil Aras - Dance MF - (Hot Haus Recs) (2016)

reminds me of something Leftfield would play in their Essential Mixes.

There's a lot of not-techno in this thread. Not something I have a problem with, but I've always gotten confused over the classification of electro as techno. While there is no end of goodness in the grey-area between the two, tracks by Der Zyklus, Dopplereffekt and that lovely bit of neo-electro by Mariel Eto posted above inhabit a funkier, more dystopian world than [the likes of what I would think of as] techno. Do people think of Clear as a techno classic, for example?

Yes, they would. Techno and Electro (not so much the more Hip-Hop orientated stuff) are seen pretty much as they same thing. Electro's kinda seen as another variant of techno that just happened to be around before techno, especially as Juan Atkins was part of Cybertron and made the earliest techno tunes.

Some strong strength in this tune. This is the type of tune that clicks my buttons. Strong synth in the mid range and while the beats are nice they ultimately serve the synth.

I think there are two types of techno. The first one for me is the actual proper Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Robert Hood type proper 4-4 techno gear. The second is techno as in any vaguely machine sounding dance music at all incorporating all sorts of house cross overs and that.

If you use the looser definition you could sneak in drum and bass or god help us even *gulp* dubstep.

Speaking of stretching definitions, what would you classify this tune as, big beat? Tech house? Breakbeat? Fucked if I know.

Jon Hopkins - 100

I invite hate on this tune if necessary but I love it.
