I don't understand the promo posters of the main character doing various "sexy" or "cutesy" poses.

Don't get it.
It's a 'thing' he likes doing:

Right, MoonDust doesn't understand Deadpool's arse, and I don't understand this clip of him making fun of Australia:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVj8Pm9JRjI

Why is he confused by the hat? Even sarcastically it's a bit weird. Didn't he put the hat on?

CaB: collectively baffled by Deadpool.

I really fancy seeing this. I'm not sure why, maybe it's my kind of humour. I'm not usually into superhero films, the last one I went to see in the cinema was The Punisher, 12 years ago. But this appeals to me for some reason.

I know some people aren't sure what to make of this character or Ryan Reynolds, so I urge them to watch this post-haste:

How were the rape jokes?

There were so many sarcastic swipes it's hard to remember any specific jokes but if there were any rape jokes I missed them.
It's worth seeing after a few pints of whatever with a couple of mates as it's all very silly and more folks came out of the screening
smiling than when I saw Spotlight last week.

Reviews and reports on this are much more positive than I expected after that trailer, so kinda almost looking forward to seeing this soon. I guess with brain fully off it could be some knockabout fun. Hell, it can be the same level as Kingsman and I'd be ok with it.

Kermode liked it: https://youtu.be/Itcn9qY_mXc

Well that's encouraging... you'd think he'd be quite dismissive of it.

Box Office: Ryan Reynolds' 'Deadpool' Earns Record $47.5M Friday for Massive $130M Debut.

Wow. That's pretty great for a relatively low-budget, R-rated movie. Might encourage studios to take a punt on edgier genre stuff.

And Betty White loved it, too.

Fuck me. Well in that case the film is already considered a success, since it made back double its $60m budget. An enormous success, in fact, if it did that in one weekend. It could sell no more tickets at all from this moment on and still be thought of as a hit.

Cue overblown sequel that utterly tanks, meaning nobody dares touch the property ever again.

It's... okay, I suppose. Like many rapid fire comedies, the material is hit and miss, but in this case, with far more misses than hits. If you're a fan of series 3 and 4 of The Thick of It, you might like it, since Deadpool shares a love of contrived, overwritten insults and sexually descriptive compound swearwords with the characters in those episodes. Much of the rest of what he says feels like Joss Whedon writing for Family Guy.

The best stuff is probably the action, which is suitably ridiculous and usually funnier and more imaginative than what happens when he opens his mouth. It's disappointing, though, that most of the best action beats have already been shown in the trailers and there's way more - I'd argue far too much - of his origin story than I expected; I'd guess we see significantly more of him without his mask than with it.

Don't get me wrong, there are some genuinely funny moments in there. Just not anywhere near as many as there should be. And don't just take my word for it; the cinema was packed and with the exception of about 10 occasions, the entire film passed in near silence. If you haven't liked what you've seen in the trailers or advertising, I wouldn't go in expecting something different.

How were the rape jokes?

There's only one rape joke that I can remember, but it's probably the most obnoxious joke in the entire film.

For those that don't care about having this hilarious gag spoiled:
Ryan Reynolds and his (future) girlfriend bond by competing over how awful their lives have been until now. They both happily pronounce that they were molested as children, but she "beats him" by saying was fucked by two uncles, rather than just one, boasting "They DP'd me".
There were gales of laughter at the screening I saw. It's not as mad as the Crank films perhaps, but it's not all that far off, which is surprising for a major studio superhero thing (albeit a modestly budgeted one).

Some gripes: I felt they could have done a lot more with the fourth wall deconstruction stuff; I wasn't sure about the main villain bloke. Maybe him being all mockney is a subversion of the typical posh English baddie, or maybe he's just a bit naff; I was disappointed that the love interest was relegated to damsel in distress, especially when the trailer had her specifically saying that she wasn't one. Why
set up the mutation inducing oxygen chamber and have her trapped in it if not to foreshadow her developing powers of her own
?

Otherwise I enjoyed it greatly.

‘Deadpool’ Demolishes Box Office Records with $135 Million Debut.

Wowzers. Had an initial target of $75 million, ends up with the third highest opening of all time. And remember, it's an R-rated movie, plus there's no 3D ticket to rely on.

I actually wondered if I might have enjoyed it more if the audience hadn't been so silent throughout. Watching a comedy in a packed cinema and no-one laughs, as with all comedy, you laugh out loud more and enjoy the experience more if you're surrounded by other people enjoying themselves. Even the bits I found funny rarely got laughs.

It might be the fact people just thought it was rubbish, but I also wondered if it was partly down to how heavily the script relies on American pop culture references and the fact that many people may have gone in expecting a tone similar to the X-Men or Disney/Marvel films, and then finding it was full of meta-jokes and jokes about cum. I saw families in there, for example; children no older than 11 or 12, watching the film's hero openly wanking.

Yeah, on a story level, the villain was the worst thing about it - although I liked
seeing him credited as "Stereotypical English Villain".
Yeah, on a story level, the villain was the worst thing about it - although I liked
seeing him credited as "Stereotypical English Villain".
The whole opening to the film was great, I thought.  It wasn't just that, the whole thing was full of things like 'Directed by...
some prick
, and 'Produced by...'
an asshat
.  All that whilst doing some good cinematography about a moment that actually occurs mid-way through the film.

I also enjoyed the way it built back up to that moment, and then when you see the opening again you do actually wonder how it was made.  Even though I know technically how it's done, I'm still a sucker for any camera that rotates degrees around a 'thing'[nb]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_time[/nb] and how you'd actually achieve that with an action scene including a man giving someone a wedgie[nb]Probably computers, I dunno.[/nb].

Anyway, Deadpool was good, a solid 7/10.  I was one of the first ones laughing[nb]Quietly, I'm not a cunt.[/nb] at the opening titles, and I think the whole audience took their cue from me because there was gradually more laughter throughout the film once the tone was established.  Mrs weekender left to do some shopping after about half an hour, make of that what you will[nb]A reasonable outcome would be "She didn't like the film and wanted to go shopping before the shops closed".[/nb].

I just felt that it felt slightly flat once the flashback to the opening scene had been made, and then the latter half of the movie was a fairly 'standard' Hollywood blockbuster ending.

I can see how a more adult approach to Marvel stuff works, and it does work, but it just wasn't satisfying enough in the dénouement, for me.

Were they? I know some of the other things they said were absurd, but I assumed that was only as they escalated the competition. The first ones, including
the child abuse, I took to be real events they were exploiting to outdo each other.
Also, yes, weekender, I thought that whole scene on the motorway was the highlight of the film. Best direction, best jokes, best action. If more of the film had maintained that level of energy and ideas, I'd have probably loved it.

It also featured my favourite bit in the whole film, when
Deadpool was counting down the bullets and then wasted two on the dead guy who had pissed him off.
Aye, it should have been the end of the film.  Leads beautifully into sequel territory.

I loved it.

Two tiny 12 year olds asked me to buy them tickets so they could see it. I took their money and said I was calling the police.

Loved seeing Colossus, it was more than the cameo I expected and they got his character closer than any X-men film has tried so far. And Negasonic Teenage Warhead, is she a real comic character? It's a Monster Magnet song.

edit - yeah the MM song came first. (1995). Ha!

I haven't seen the film yet, but this hugely obnoxious article has persuaded me to see it in the next couple days,

Some decent digs, mind: "Deadpool makes fun of itself when there is barely a self to make fun of. The experience is like listening to people improvising on instruments they cannot play.

I saw it last night and despite a few very funny lines and setpieces, I just found the constant wisecracks wearying after a while. Did Reynolds actually deliver a single line that didn't have a joke in it? The jokes at the expense of the old blind lady I found especially unpleasant.

The stuff with the taxi driver was my favourite bit, wish they'd shown what happened to him and his girlfriend.

It seemed to be riven with plot holes though:

How did he know where to find Francis at the end?
How did Francis find Deadpool's girlfriend?
What happened to the Super-Slave plan? That sounded quite an interesting premise but never went anywhere
What was Francis selling to that guy in the helicopter at the start?

Still, there was a trailer for Grimsby beforehand so it could have been worse, fuck me that looks shit
