Surprised no threads yet.

Kenny Wheeler, aged 84 - legendary British trumpet and flugelhorn player. Career arguably peaked in the late 70s  when he made an album with Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland & Jack DeJohnette for ECM, but he's been working solidly since too, all the way up to this year in fact.

U. Srinivas, aged 45 - enormously influential indian mandolin player, best known in the west as a member of John McLaughlin's Remember Shakti. He was such a towering figure that he was known as simply "Mandolin Srinivas" to  many. The guy was a beast.

Srinivas was a God, phenomenal Carnatic musician. Gutted.

Here's a guy who took what Srinivas was doing on mandolin (using a fretted instrument to create an essentially fretless style with use of glissandi) and tried to do it on guitar (very hard due to the much longer neck).

Worth bearing in mind that when Srinivas heard Lane he was gobsmacked and straight onto the phone calling his friends and family to tell them about this guy from American Deep South who could play alongside Carnatic musicians as if he'd been doing it all his life. Lane also died very young and was a sad loss. Srinivas was his idol, so at least they'll be jamming ragas in heaven now or some such trite youtube comment style sentiment.
