There was another guy who got a picture of his house as it burned down. Which, to be fair to Facebook, he would have uploaded himself.

23 Daves

Saw a young man with a double-barreled name whining about "envious lefties" destroying this "great country" on a politics thread on Facebook. Went to his profile, and one of the first memes I saw was this:

Then I had a fit of giggles. It's the despairing tone and the almost romantic imagery.

What about those "this was my year" things? Who on earth wants to look at a slideshow of someone's year on facebook? I mean, unless you're stalking that person or something I can't see the appeal.

I'd have thought if you were stalking someone it would be like watching the recap of the previous day's games on Match of the Day 2 when you've already watched Match of the Day the previous night and spent half an hour before going to sleep furiously masturbating over a particularly sweet set piece.

I read an interesting book about Medieval europe recently, apparently reactionaries have been chugging the 'envy' line against anyone who objects to the exploitation and dickishness of a tiny elite, since the 12th century.

It's the easiest argument, isn't it? I think there's a genuine struggle for some to accept that, while envy exists in most human beings to a certain extent, they feel it about different people for different reasons. Wealthy people are envious of people who are more wealthy than them, so assume everyone feels the same - but some of those people may actually be envious of others with stable family units, or more creative talent, or beautiful partners, or more intelligence, or... (the list goes on). We all have our reasons, shallow or otherwise, and they're not all about whether someone happens to be the CEO of a petrochemical company or not.

It's a rather odd argument, so it's strange they've been using it for so long. Like you say, there are many things people can be envious of, but that it often relates to personal goals rather than political ones. It also ignores the fact that these movements, old and new, wanted to get rid of lords and bishops, kings and wealthy capitalists, not become them.

I remember a very odd argument that members of the Socialist Workers Party made (a few years ago) when they came under criticism for something - that the critics were envious of the SWP and wished they were in it! Given that it's so easy to join the SWP (signing a petition will probably get you on their membership rolls), this argument from envy-at-exclusivity is bizarre to say the least.

Puce Moment

That is a beautiful image of post-dementia romance.

That "your year" thing was actually quite good.
You could edit it and add photos in, and because it wasn't a Facebook app, the photos you added aren't saved to your profile.
So, there's me, lots of cool photos from my year, some silly ones, but all relevant and the last shot, where the hands place that last picture, I uploaded a photo of a huge cock.

Humour.

Quincey

How does Facebook calcuate the "Suggested groups" feed? Most of them seem to fit in to what I like, but one of them is "Male Feet:A place where you can share and enjoy the beauty of a mans feet. "

I've never posted anything or liked anything to do with feet, male or female. None of my Facebook contacts are members of this group either.

The photo of the group is a topless man sitting on a sofa with one of his feet in the foreground.

I've got nothing against people aroused by feet, male or female, but it seems an odd choice.

olliebean

Did you recognise the man?

Quincey

No, or any of the people who were members of the group. There were over 400 members.

Just been having a scroll through the postings of those scallies 'Britain First', and this really made me laugh -

The capital letters, lack of context, and slightly low quality choice of image are spot-on funny. That parody page 'Britain Furst' has it way too easy.

You get the idea with that, then.

Let's all chip in and buy Clint a pint and a slap up meal at a country pub... then send him out to Paul Ross waiting in the chilly car park.

Couple weeks ago I deactivated Facebook. I only ever went on there when I was pissed, and I reached the point where I couldn't face waking up every other morning to a record of my pissed up wankering of the night before. Private messages sent to this one or the other blathering on about this or that that I'd done that you should check out, uploading photos of myself blind drunk lying in the back garden with snails on my forehead, getting in arguments with folk on the Nightbreed group for no reason...

The proper This Is It came when I was plastered one morning and started shouting at an ex for the ridiculously hateful shit they'd been posting in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo business. I woke up to a bunch of notifications that I never dared look at, and immediately deactivated the account. A few days later I was Not Of Myself and I logged in again to see what I had done, and it was disgraceful. I'd also sent a bunch of pornographic videos to some folk - and posted one on CaB - that I really shouldn't be sending pornographic videos to, if I'm expecting any sort of career. Wasn't me in the porn, by the by, just some porn that I'd edited to one of my songs, with the blessing of the folks involved.

Anyway, I'm about to re-activate for an hour or two to see what the fuck else I did that night. No good can come of it, but there you go.

Edit: Not that bad. Bunch of ticks beside messages I hope folk have forgotten about by now. Gah.

Dead Soon

Fucking bravo for fighting back at the hateful Charlie Hebdo posts at least. The most I've done is screen-shot a shitty post, blank out the names and pictures and upload it to Tumblr for a vent, which is essentially as good as doing nothing at all.

What's up with the trend of saying 'nigga' in lieu of, say, mate or buddy? It's common amongst the teenage/early 20's range and it's very, very annoying. Why do the connotations of the word lose their meaning just because it's spelled slightly differently?

Yep, they've stuck a male member of the Queen's Guard and a male bagpipe player in there, as if it's consistent with the rest of the pictures and the general point they're desperately trying to make about Islamic countries and female dress. And does any part of Syria have red-brick housing?

Their supporters haven't noticed. Britain Furst needn't bother.

Von Rasmus

Liking the diversity there, lads.

I especially like how they've resorted to a painting of a Spanish lady as they couldn't find a photo diverse enough.

Really don't know what point they're trying to make with that.  There are two gingers in there, but that's about as diverse as it gets.  These ladies probably even share the same dress size.

Trying to gain followers by using the popular language of the 'enemy' (a.k.a. "liberal, anti-white" society).[nb]Words like "racism" "diversity" "hate speech" "freedom" "tolerance" etc.[/nb] Stormfront does this as well. ("We're not supremacists, we just want our own homeland. The Jews have their own, why can't we?" "We're all for diversity; diversity amongst our own people." "We're not racist, we only want our own independence: the right to live amongst our own and to protect them. We only want self-determination." "Liberals are the real racists." "White people are the true victims of hate crimes.")

How long did they get away with that in Parliament Square?

This and that William picture, and their strangely fervent 'fire and brimstone' religious warrior outlook, makes me wonder if Britain First have actually been a parody all along. I mean, I know they've been on the news and stuff, but...

'*too'.
