Shoulders?-Stomach!

Sad news that Sabine Schmitz has died, seems to be related to a cancer diagnosis a few years ago.

Blumf

Damn. A great drivers, and by all accounts, a nice person off the track too.

Seen this vid posted:

Even though she's starting behind lower league cars, and wafts past them with ease, once she's up with fellow GT class car, she's still cutting through, in wet conditions, with barely a slip.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Cheers, I loved the early overtakes down the outside, keeping her foot in when the space was narrowing.

Blumf

New electric racing series, Extreme E, is on ITV1 at 1200h tomorrow (Sun)

A lot more interesting than Formula E.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Looks like we might have a close title fight with 2 evenly match teams at the front and a nip and tuck fight for 3rd as well. Would be typical if we have the most interesting season for 7 or 8 years just before a load of new rule changes come in.

oh they should totally get Mr C to do a big THIS IS FORMULA ONE intro for them

either that or do whatever to get Limmy to do that voice

Did anyone watch Extreme E then? I watched all the qualifying (3+ hours of it) yesterday and the semi-final races this morning as live streams on youtube and really enjoyed it all. I was wondering how the TV broadcast came across though.... was it just the final with 3 teams driving for 10 minutes? Did it show much of the qualifying etc? I missed it on ITV and had to use a VPN to watch the final on youtube (which was annoying).

It was fun getting to know the drivers, most of whom i was unfamiliar with. The mix of male and female is welcome as it's often the women who have a bit more personality. Only one team over the whole weekend chose not to use their male driver first which was a bit disappointing but it's probably just tactical as there does seem to be quite a speed difference between the guys and girls (understandable as there just aren't female equivalents to Sebastian Loeb or Carlos Sainz...yet).

My favourite bits were Cristina Gutierrez taking over from Loeb on the very first qualifying lap (the first run in anger in the cars for anyone) and driving like a bad-ass, and Catie Munnings getting a flat tire near the start of her lap and continuing to absolutely cane it around the course.

Some of the screen graphics and choice of camera-shots etc. during the racing were just confusing and annoying, i hope that will all settle down a bit as the season continues. Even the commentators didn't really know what was going on at some points. Also, when each race is only 12 minutes long, just show the whole thing, not some crappy highlights, especially if the race contains the most exiting example of wheel-to-wheel racing of the whole weekend (the losers race or whatever it was called). And cutting away from the second driver (usually female) embarking on their lap to interview the first driver (usually male) who has just got out the car was frustrating and can wait until after the race. Its only 5 mins ffs.

But yeah, i enjoyed it and will watch the next one in Senegal at the end of May.

Blumf

Yeah, the TV broadcast was a bit limp, only showing that final race and not really going into details of the previous sessions. Looks like this will be best viewed on the streams for the whole weekend.

Worse still, the race itself was a bit of an anticlimax, as X44's car had an issue that dragged it out of contention. +0:23 2nd and +1:38 3rd for a 12 min race is shocking.

In general, what the absolute fuck is up with their graphics!? Massive sodding things taking up most the screen to give you not much info. Worst offender was some big circle thing that showed you... not sure exactly, accelerator/brake state of the car? But not only did it obscure the view of the actual race, but it also shook around the screen itself so you could barely focus on it either. Utter stupidity!

Ted-Maul

Yeah, one graphic was like a massive 'X' that took up the whole screen and displayed Throttle, Brake, Torque and..... Stability? Ridiculous. Their version of the G-force graphic was good though as it showed you how off-balance the cars were getting over the more bouncy terrain... this was necessary as the camera angles didn't always show that.

The fact that this first race was in the desert basically meant that no car could follow less than 30 seconds behind another car due to visibility through the sand. The one time someone tried it they ploughed straight into the back of the other car and neither could carry on. I hope the terrain at the next venue wont have this problem.... it's the Ocean race..... next up Aztec and Futuristic.

Wonderful Butternut

Gary Gannon, who's Mick Schumacher's engineer at Haas (I think he was K-Mag's before that) is a gem:

He's so chill and calming. Should be a Counsellor or answering a suicide hotline or something.

Ambient Sheep

Fans of Ben Edwards should be aware that he's doing the commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra this weekend, one-off replacing Jack Nicholls who's doing Formula E in Monaco.

Much as I like Jack, it was such a huge and wonderful surprise to hear Ben's voice appear at the start of FP1 this morning!  Really put a spring in my step.

Times: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/47499757 (start times are 5 minutes before, and end times are 5 minutes after, those stated, because whoever writes that page is a moron)

Talking of FE in Monaco, my understanding is they're going to be using the full F1 circuit for the first time.

Ambient Sheep

Good point someone made on Twitter earlier:

Should we all be genuinely worried about Mazepin at Monaco in a fortnight? Potential for much more serious impacts than usual hilarity. #bbcf1

Bently Sheds

He's working on the assumption that Mazepin will be able to get out of the pitlane without binning it in the Armco.

petril

He might surprise us and be a modern day Andrea de Cesaris, a man who could and would crash anything anywhere, except Monte Carlo where he'd be the safest pair of hands out there and bloody rapid too. Nearly scored a podium in a Scuderia Italia in '89 'til Piquet took him out.

Ambient Sheep

Hah, I didn't know that latter fact about de Cesaris.  That's great!

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Wasn't Maldonado (or someone similar) also a Monaco specialist, or at least came into F1 with that reputation

Ambient Sheep

Rings a bell.

Mazepin for Monaco pole, then.

Or maybe not. :)

Mosley's gone

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57232681
QuoteMax Mosley, the British racing driver who went on to run motorsport's world governing body and become a prominent privacy campaigner, has died aged 81.

Wonderful Butternut

Huh. I really thought Ecclestone would pop his clogs first.

Alberon

Nah, Ecclestone will never die. He'll just keep shrinking until he disappears completely.

Blumf

Ecclestone has no doubt made a deal with Death, a deal that also fucks over British F1 in some way.

Ambient Sheep

Wow, that was way earlier than I expected.  Perhaps the boredom of yesterday finished him off.

Presumably we'll now get the true story of what happened in the 2007 Spygate affair: Joe Saward for one has long intimated there's a huge story to be told once Mosley went.

In the meantime, Andrew Benson's full obit (some but far from all of it is was in the above link) is worth reading: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/57231465

Also, Matt Bishop has put up his legendary 1997 interview with Max up here: https://twitter.com/TheBishF1/status/1396864337277562885

and Jon Ronson has shared an amusing thing about Mosley's email name:
https://twitter.com/jonronson/status/1396849635814150144

Ambient Sheep

Also just found out that he funded David Nutt's psilocybin-for-depression clinical trial!

https://twitter.com/ProfDavidNutt/status/1396883922546483200

By the way, embarrassingly, that Matt Bishop interview isn't the one I was thinking of.  I only had time to glance at it earlier and assumed it was the "legendary" one.  It isn't.  Still quite good but not the one I meant.  Sorry.

Ambient Sheep

Fascinating stat: every time Carlos Sainz has been on the podium, Lewis Hamilton has finished seventh... and other things too:

Every time @Carlossainz55 has appeared on the podium a Red Bull owned team has won the race. 👀

• Brazil 2019 - Verstappen

• Italy 2020 - Gasly

• Monaco 2021 - Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton has also finished 7th on all three occasions! 😱

Blumf

That was a mess.

Not a fan of the teams getting their drivers to slipstream each other, these quali sessions are tight enough as it is without halving the time drivers have to put in real laps.
