Some discussion in the other Bond thread, but - yeah - it needs a thread of its own now.

Massively excited for this.  The casting is excellent, the team behind the camera is solid, the locations are good and the return of SPECTRE / Blofeld bodes well.

As long as they've got the script right this should be a tap in for them.

As long as it's better than [INSERT NAME OF RECENT ONE] that wasn't as good as [ONE I WATCHED ON A BANK HOLIDAY AS A KID WHEN EVERYTHING WAS SIMPLE AND THE WORLD WAS A NICER PLACE AND I WAS HAPPY].

A viral marketing website has gone up : http://www.waldorf-music.info/spectre

I'm not sure what it all means but it does hint that another sinister-sounding organisation called 'MIDI' might crop up in the plot.

In case you missed it in the other thread.

Hmm. Theme tune by The Pet Shop Boys?

Dig the teaser poster with the tentacular breaking glass:

kittens

christoph waltz is in it. this might be the first bond film i watch!

The bullet hole in that poster is shaped exactly like this:

Probably deliberate. I'm assuming that this film will be a celebration of US/UK state-sanctioned overseas torture. Bond himself probably dishing a bit out but regretting it later over a scotch with his bowtie undone.

SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion)

Is that really a good name to call your organisation in 2015? How are your press officers supposed to spin that?

They may as well have went with the James Bond Junior cartoon's S.C.U.M. (Saboteurs and Criminals United in Mayhem).

Maybe they'll make the SPECTRE name stand for something a bit more realistic.

Jim_MacLaine

I'm happy with two exceptions.

No.1 (of 2) Andrew Scott. Can't stand him. Terrible actor.
No.2 (of 2) A̶n̶d̶r̶e̶w̶ ̶S̶c̶o̶t̶t̶  The Aston. I'm not feeling it.

and Crabwalk, please. No spoilers.

That makes it even more interesting in my futile opinion.

I observed this too and I'm not sure the 'terrorism' part would play well either. I imagine it will be changed. Or likely won't even be an acronym this time. I'm all for the return of SPECTRE as an organisation though, but they'll have to give it a significant overhaul to update it and align it to the current Bond.

I'm sure they will sweep Quantum under the rug, but they'll need to differentiate it somehow. I'm not sure they'd get away with a Dr No style exposition.

Gulftastic

Good to see Batista in there. He'll make a proper Bond henchmen. Something lacking from the series of late.

I read about that in Q Magazine.

It's actually a good opportunity to 'finish' the Quantum stuff in a way, perhaps with a throwaway line about how it evolved into the more effective SPECTRE or something.  I think the Quantum storyline was handled rather sloppily anyway, but at least it would give a small sense of closure and continuity to the Craig era.

I thought Skyfall was increadibly disappointing, one of the worst Bond films ever. Bond does fuck all the entire film other than get shot, be a bit over the hill, then trudge around the highlands failing to save anyone as the film turns into a geriatric version of home alone. Awful, not on a patch on the criminally underrated Quantum of Solace.

This sounds like it could be great though, if it gets back to some solid old school Bonding.

CaledonianGonzo

I liked QoS a heap more than most, but Skyfall was the significantly more "old school Bond" of the two movies.

What font is that on the poster[nb]Tried a few 'what font' sites but they came up with no matches[/nb], the more I see it, the more I like it's use there. Seems to have a slightly retro feel to it that fits James Bond.

monkfromhavana

I didn't even know that it wasn't Daniel Craig anymore.

Old school in the sense that Bond is central to the film. He may as well have not bothered turning up to the last one because he didn't actually do anything.

Quantum of Solace is such an obvious rush job. It's got almost no plot, rushed character beats, a forgettable script, a weak villain, unforgivably humdrum action scenes and a director who doesn't know how to film action. It's the one where people say "I quite like the opera scene".

biggytitbo

Alternatively it has a discipline missing from all other modern Bond films - it's short, tight, dark as hell and has by far the most interesting bond/bond-girl relationship in any of the films. 2 broken people finding a common bond in their pain fuelled thirst for revenge. I think it's brilliant really and the flabby old nonsense that is Skyfall doesn't hold a candle to it.

I assume this "Mr Hinx" character is Blofeld's cat.

The fact it's short and tight[nb]New porn laws meant I had to remove a joke here.[/nb] are strengths, in of themselves, I agree, and the relationship and Bond's motivation are indeed rich areas they could have explored - but instead, squander and waste in the most spectacularly superficial and unmemorable way. Even if recent offerings have been overlong - and I'd say that was more of a problem with Casino Royale than Skyfall - they all contain several brilliant action scenes and a handful of memorable dramatic/character moments. QOS is the one, solitary Bond film where the action scenes are the weak points, and as I said before, in execution, almost nothing stands out about it. Except, I'm legally obliged to add, the Opera scene. :)

I believe there was a writers strike and they had to rewrite some of the screenplay during production. Craig himself wrote some of his own dialogue for the movie. All in all during the mess Hollywood was experiencing at that time the end product was not that bad.

Spoiler alert
OK...it could have been worse.

I take it you've seen Goldfinger. ......!

Now that SPECTRE have arrived, I suppose this film will end on a massive 'And NOW he's James Bond!' vibe. Just the same as the way the other three films ended.
