I think it fails in either respect, really. As a traditional Bond it's okay, but suffers from pacing issues, a forgettable script, a weak finale and an unclear plot. As a Craig era character piece, it falls flat on its face with inconsistent characterisation, contrived twists and unclear motivations. It's not a terrible film, but I think the Craig films as a whole have raised audience expections about what we can expect from the series and this felt like a film that didn't know what direction it wanted to continue in.

It was the film that Daniel Craig had often threatened which was a return to flippancy while still keeping things grounded... and it didn't really come off.
Even after watching it twice, I'm still struggling to remember what the significance of L'Americain was - and my mind is geared towards storing trivial crap like that.

It was the name of the hotel in Morocco. Do you need to remember such things?

Yes. I know it was the hotel. I struggle to recall what they found behind the wall. Some more Mr White stuff, just what exactly and how that takes them further... I'm left head-scratching.

Does Craig take his top off in SPECTRE? I'm compiling a list.

Watched it tonight. Have we discussed the smoke/haze/steam overload and tons of mirror wank shots?
I didn't like this and I liked Skyfall. If it wasn't 2.5 hrs i would maybe give it another watch.

Loved the Mexican couch gag at the beginning  though.

Right now, MGM and EON are busy negotiating production and distribution deals with another studio, now that the contract with Sony is over. Warner, Fox and a few others are interested in producing Bond 25, 26...

That must be the main reason (apart from the free publicity they get with the endless "Who will be the next Bond?" features in the press) for which Craig is not officially under contract, so he can be used as an asset at some point during the negotiations. A studio is ready to offer a certain sum of money, even if they'll have to promote a new face for Bond, who will not be proven box office quality like Craig is now (plus, they may have to recast Blofeld, etc.). If EON plays their cards rights, at one point, they'll raise the possibility that Craig would return as a favor to them, possibly for a two film deal that would conclude his stint as 007. Any studio head would raise the offer by a noticeable amount.

Daniel Craig Maybe Almost Bankrupted Skyfall With a Pair of Tough Guy Leather Gloves.

How odd. Also:

Cannibalism, necrophilia, and a brush with James Bond: meet Nicolas Winding Refn, cinema's master of shock and gore.

QuoteWill this be to all intents and purposes "his Bond movie", I ask? "Yeah. Yeah," he agrees – before collecting himself and adding with a serpentine smile: "Well, I don't know yet." Before Sam Mendes agreed to direct the most recent Bond film Spectre, Refn was one of a few filmmakers approached by Eon Productions to take the reins: he doesn't elaborate, but says he's now certain franchise work is not for him. "I just know this way I can do whatever I want, and that outweighs any money anyone can give me."

You read stuff like that and it really gets you wondering: is Daniel Craig actually a bit of an asshole? He's quite a private person it seems, I've only really seen him on a couple of Graham Norton appearances. He seems to have more of a sense of humour than people credit him with.

But when you hear about him appearing as a Stormtrooper, seemingly because it would be a laugh, you think, OK that's cool. But then the crass way he denied the rumour. And the "slitting wrists" comment. OK, not all (any?) Hollywood stars are saints, probably not even well-known nice guys like Hanks ( or less well known like Keanu Reeves).

So what kind of twat spontaneously decides his character should wear leather gloves, with evening wear, in a tropical far-eastern casino? When a key part of the scene is his fingerprints?

Listen to his interview on the Nerdist podcast. That is a genuinely happy Funtime Danny.

Also, I'm quite happy to call bullshit on the gloves story. Sounds made up with little evidence.

Yeah, it does seem a bit odd. Plus his hands don't look outsized in the footage.

Yeah. Didn't the guy who made this video realise how fucking ridiculous that sounds? James Bond, in a casino, wearing leather gloves with a tuxedo. As some people have pointed out though, he does wear leather gloves in the Shanghai assassination scene, so it's probably that one.
