Prime Sly Stone absolutely killing it.

I had forgotten about that clip.  I don't think there is a better live performance than that!

I posted this clip back in 2012, but although not musical, it is still a live performance that like the Levi Stubbs thing, destroys me every time I watch it.

Astonishing but, truly heartbreaking.

A lip-synched TV performance matey in your avatar, but just very bizarre.

Was going to post Jacques Dutronc, singing Les Cactus, but then remembered this.

This brief clip of Odetta performing Waterboy shows up in No Direction Home, and it's one of the most - again - astonishing things I've ever seen. I'd love to know where this clip originates from, actually. Truly spellbinding.

MAGMA: at the Bobino in 1981.

TINA & IKE: 1971 - River Deep (check out the dance routine from 0.15!)

FOCUS: doing Hocus Pocus on US TV in 1973 (the audience go crazy at the end)

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA: Swedish TV 1974... Interview, then performance begins circa 3.00 mins.

In an attempt to produce something that not Bjork I'm Paris with Mark Bell or anything from the Atlantic Staxx norweigian tour you can have these (which are in the spirit of the initial post).

India doing Backfired. Fucking love that shit.

And this is just another level. Etta doing Etta but cranked up to 11. Pissed. Pissed off. The fact it's got a slight cheesy 70s white boy backing band just somehow accentuates the genius of the lead performance. Best lyrics ever written sung in best performance ever. Probably my favourite 9 minutes of music ever.

Bit of a tangent, but those who prefer early Verve should check out Black Submarine who list Nick McCabe and Simon Jones amongst their lineup. Certainly a lot closer to the early guitar freakout style than latter-day Verve were. The lp is very good indeed.

Black Submarine - Black Submarine

Black Submarine - Heart First

Anyway, to get back on track with the live part of the thread :

Johnny Marr - Getting Away With It
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9zU6WkBpIM

Saw him doing this live last year, and it was absolutely mesmerising.

The Black Submarine LP is pretty good agreed, the group seems to be the core of Verve without Ashcroft. Pretty sure Verve's drummer was down to play in Black Submarine but pulled out. (edit - here you go http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/nick-mccabe-sailing-calmer-waters-6662869)

Speaking of Marr, I thought this performance of How Soon Is Now is awesome, far better than Morrissey's live efforts. The guitars sound fantastic

Just been revisiting the Associates on youtube, and fucking hell, Billy MacKenzie was incredible. I think the guy could've covered any song and made it his own.

Here's a version of "Kites", originally by Simon Dupree & The Big Sound. Heartbreakingly poor quality but the strength of his performance cuts through it somehow.

Growing up in the 80s, I used to hate Billy Joel.  That all changed when I saw this:

Also, I've often what impact this performance had in Burnley and Wigan when it went out in 1965.

I'm not sure if people will agree but I've always enjoyed the vitality of Run-D.M.C. on Graffiti Rock in 1984.

It helps that they're performing Sucker MCs which is possibly one of my favourite tracks ever.

I think we could do with a Run-D.M.C. thread on here one day.

Moreso I would say that with Ashcroft dominating the reformed Verve McCabe(and indeed Jones) was side lined, stuff like The Rolling People predates there first spilt if I remember correctly although it would probably have been a lot better recorded back then without Ashcrofts vocals dominating.

Yeah, I stumbled across some radio sessions and things years ago, and amongst them were early versions of "The Rolling People" and "Come On" from 1995. A couple of songs on Urban Hymns came out of the band just jamming, which was then edited down and Dickie would sing something something over the top. Most of it started as an Ashcroft solo album though.

For all the faults of the Verve post-1995 though, I do like the live version of "Come On" that closed their Haigh Hall gig in 1998:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l8FBLcJfE4

What I like is that at times, Nick McCabe just makes whatever noises he bloody well wants. I used to have a video of a gig from the US tour they did after McCabe quit. Talk about a band that sounded utterly crippled.

At least one of these funky men is coming up on acid live in a television studio in 1969, and making a pretty good noise, too. The Parliaments morphing into Funkadelic before your eyes, I love the way it just disintegrates during the last 3 minutes, Eddie Hazel starts playing guitar with his teeth, Clinton rolls around on the floor while the audience members, coaxed out to dance with band, look for a way to extricate themselves. How the greatest clip on youtube has only 172,000 views is a travesty and a condemnation of humanity. I believe the drummer was shipped off to Vietnam within months, strange times.

Skip to 3:03 if your short of time or impatient for magical shit to start happening

On this clip, I still dreaming of being everybody in shot - Iggy, an audience member (seated!), the drummer, but particularly the bass player just to say I made that sound. Apparently after this show Iggy said, "The cameraman - he DANCED with me!":

Lust For Life - Iggy Pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD5X5OGLySI

You'll never want to hear this one played the 'slow' way again, and that electrical glottal stop on the organ notes:

Green Onions - Booker T & The MGs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3MWu6LhWQ8

Love this because the studio's bare, but Bez is in full flow regardless:

Performance - Happy Mondays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtpD5mOgyKo

Marriott with very little microphone technique, but makes up for it:

Tin Soldier - Small Faces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uG0Zqo5zrg

But for astonishing in another sense:
