There is ludicrous technique and then there's this, which maybe one in a billion people at the most can realistically achieve:

Nice. If you have heard my HA HA Tapes contributions you will realise that the musical genes didn't splice very far but this is actually my first cousin: Llyr Williams. I suppose you could say he is a fucking genuine genius. Another Wrexham boy.

This is how to play the violin too. From a movie (no idea). Jascha Heifetz playing the best piece of music ever written* for vioiin.

*Well the first movement anyway.

Ha, that's so fucking astonishingly good. AC/DC may have made the same album over and over again to largely diminishing returns, but that's the sort of behaviour that gives them permission do anything they want. Even the apparently mooted reunion minus Malcolm. Just to get a whiff of that magic again.

Agree. I have no dog in the game for AC/DC (apart from I enjoy walking around the Dunston side of the Tyne in Gateshead) but that is ace.

Could honestly post anything with Hilary Hahn but this (particularly the finale) is thrilling.

Love Hahn. Her solo Bach albums are astonishing.

The Roches - Hammond Song

I don't know how I'd never heard this band before. This performance breaks me up.

It is a great song. I had never heard of them before until they popped up on my Spotify recommends playlist last year. This is also sampled on the new(ish) avalanches single

Richard Dawson fans. We all know how amazing he is but I think he has topped himself with this. It's from 2018 (I haven't actually seen him in a while as not been loving his recent stuff as much) but this performance seems to take his intensity to another level. I think it's because he is exposing how fucking incredible he is as a guitar player in the first few minutes. That shit guitar has never sounded better.

Fuck me, I knew which one that was going to be before I even clicked. Proper spine-tingling stuff.

I know what you mean about his recent stuff, I'm less interested in seeing him with a band as he's such a compelling solo performer.

That out of tune sloppy guitar playing is horrible. Not in a good way, not raw, just actively embarrassingly bad.

It's my genuine opinion. I honesty find that unlistenable. Intensity without precision or technique is not enough. It's not so bad when the singing comes in but I just can't handle that kind of guitar playing (and I like the more avant-grade end of things such as Fripp, Abercrombie, Buckethead etc).

Cuellar

He is a very good guitarist though. Honest.

Twit 2

Oh yes, I can see how what he's doing is an aesthetic choice and that he could play more conventionally if he wished but I just can't get my ears around how out of tune and sloppily articulated that is.

FsF

Some wee moments had me cringing slightly, but overall I fucking loved that. Never even heard of the fella before, what should I seek out of his next?

I am genuinely stunned by this take. He had to stop playing that guitar as it just wouldn't stay in tune long enough but to say he playing is lacking in precision or technique is a remarkable statement. Having seen him at least a dozen times I am always blown away with how reproducible his stuff his. He MEANs to play like that; those rhythms are intentional and not a result of sloppiness.

Fair enough if you don't like it but I would give my left hand to be able to play like that. :)

I may have posted this here before, years ago but this has go to be the most astonishing drum solo ever caught on film.

Doesn't miss a beat despite having a heart attack in the middle of it.

Check out anything really. What do you like? His live shows are a mix of solo singing, solo guitar pieces and a mixture of both. More recently he has been playing with a full band. And he also fancies himself as a bit of a comedian.

Solo singing: Poor Old Horse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBW3zmexWK0
Solo Guitar: The Bamburgh Beast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHq6fVbUrhI
Bit of both: Nothing Important https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSgFCUVocHo
Cover of Shirly Collins: Geordie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7htdPJuH20
With fuller band: Jogging https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGiQ_-Ktpvc

Enjoy. :)

My god. That is the best I have ever seen him drum (I read people around him reckon he was as good as he ever was by age of 10 - just got amazing and stayed amazing). The speed of those fills in insane.

I thought Richard Dawson was someone else completely and often wondered why he was talked about with such reverence. Wonder what the bloke I'm thinking of is really called...

Some good links from hummingofevil there. The album Nothing Important which The Vile Stuff is on contains more tracks like that (long, discursive songs, angular guitar, some long instrumentals). His earlier stuff is a bit more 'traditional' - The Magic Bridge is slightly less chaotic than Nothing Important, more melodic, and got some beautiful songs on it (We Picked Apples In a Graveyard Freshly Mown and The Wooden Bag are nice). His most recent two albums (Peasant and 2020) are more collaborative, narrative driven - Peasant is almost a concept album, songs from different apparently medieval stock characters, but it transcends that. If anything it's more like The Magic Bridge, with some really beautiful songs ('Soldier' and 'Beggar' are great), than Nothing Important. 2020 is sort of Peasant updated. Again, long discursive sung stories, witty, moving, about life in the UK I suppose. On these last two albums he rocks out a bit more - some absolute bangers on there: 'Scientist' on Peasant and 'Jogging' on 2020 that hummingofevil linked to. The opening track on 2020 is pretty hot too.

Puddle Of Mudd doing a Nirvana cover, with the astonishing thing being that this was ever broadcast. Or that Puddle of Mudd are an actual band who had a record deal and everything.

Fucking hell - club singer Nirvana. One for the 'made you cry with laughter' thread.

alan nagsworth

Fucking hell I laughed hard at that. The strained look on the cunt's face channelling all the nonexistent emotion of those opening chords, and that's before he even opens his cakehole.

DrGreggles

That is amazing!
The vocals, the natural rhythm of the bongo man, the bass player's death stare - remarkable!

Are we sure it's not a 'shred'?

Cuellar

I know nothing of Puddle of Mudd - is that their usual bassist? Definitely looks like he's only just learnt the song, keeps looking at the lead singer's fingers for the chord changes.
