I did (although I recorded it several weeks ago when I had long hair) It wasn't astonishing though.

I'm on a bit of a Whale kick at the minute, and I found this.

It's an absolutely sick performance, if that's what they were like on TV imagine what they must have been like live.

Can't believe this thread has been dormant for almost a year, but not worth starting a new one for this.

It's amazing this 6 year old video has been invisible to me all this time even though I can't get enough Sister Rosetta. And there's more too.

The whole channel is crammed full of great gospel, blues and jazz.

And this one! Posted nearly ten years ago!

I love this group, and by the time they get to performing Max Brown they're so in the pocket it's unreal. The sound and camera work are the cherry on top.

They were amazing live, only saw them a couple of times but they were ace.
This is good, they put it out on a 7" too but it's very hard to find:

Have you heard their cover of Prince's Darling Nikki?
That's cracking:

On a non Whale tip, this is Underworld at their finest. I was also there!

There are a lot of Underworld shows from that era appearing on Youtube, like this cracker, which is nice:

The great lost band of LA punk, Screamers. There's lots of their music on youtube now, good to see it documented. Tomata du Plenty is one of the most captivating performers, truly wild and unhinged. Exhilarating stuff and very unique - must have been mind-blowing to see this in 1978.

Minor background detail bit: the presenter in that clip, Kristian Luuk, was actually part of a successful comedy group in '90s Sweden with Henrik Schyffert - the guitarist. They're both pretty big TV stars now.

Man, the one on the right, stood totally stock still at the start, amazing bit of stage presence

Are you dissing Cream, who is moonlighting from Addis Black Widow in this performance?  Because if you are I won't have it.

No sorry, was being earnest about it, I thought she was really cool - sorry I have a tendency to sound sarcastic in writing here. I love how the band are all clearly winding up to give it some, and she's stood stock still like the short kungfu guy in the big fight in the Simpsons, clearly About to do something amazing.

Fair enough then. I think she's one of the coolest people ever and she's amazing in this, and she also does a fair bit of jiggling.

PlanktonSideburns

This is the first I've ever heard of her, but in seconds she looks commanding by just standing there, fair doos

Great performance, but also just an amazing series of images: lead singer looking like a gorgeous lost goblin, Dr robotic/toe jam and earl Mashup  on the ones and twos, every audience member a perfect Adam Curtis reaction shot, silhouette of someone holding a guitar in the audience, just keeps giving

Annie Lennox doing Here comes the rain again

What an astonishing arrangement of a song that already had no right to get better

Norton Canes

This Eurythmics concert at Heaven in 1983 cropped up on TV station ARTE recently, it's pretty brilliant

JaDanketies

also the official music video and what South Park did the 'Stevie Nicks is a goat' thing about

The opening lyrics were inspired by a menu she was reading at a Phoenix restaurant in 1980, which said, "The white wing dove sings a song that sounds like she's singing ooh, ooh, ooh. She makes her home here in the great Saguaro cactus that provides shelter and protection for her..."

I enjoy how at the end of this performance she is overloaded with roses from the crowd

Bently Sheds

Number Girl - Omoide In My Head

Probably worth forwarding to the 2 minute mark when the music begins.

The last but one song of their final gig. People in the crowd weeping, thinking they'll never see the band live again (they did reform - and split up again, last year). The energy of this whole thing is off the scale & the comments below it just add to the magic.

jobotic

Blimey, Sweet were a band weren't they? (They were also #1 on the day I was born!)

studpuppet

Musikladen has reminded me of this bit of writing about Dr Hook's appearance on the show (I posted it on the 'bands fucking around' thread a couple of years ago apparently).

https://www.gawker.com/5981614/dennis-weve-been-crying-too-much-dr-hook-and-the-untold-story-of-the-best-rock-movie-ever-made

It's worth watching the performance while reading along (sorry for the ads):

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

By the way George (who gets his chance in Part Three) is immense in all senses of the word.
