Astonishing live performances on YouTube

Old Thrashbarg

I do love going through OGWT videos; a seemingly never ending supply of excellent performances. And I also love BBC Four for showing them and other old BBC sessions so often.

This recording of Pretty Persuasion by R.E.M. is one I've recently re-heard and the slightly increased tempo and echoiness really do add to the song.

And Nils Lofgren tearing through Keith Don't Go. Just brilliant.

NY Dolls - really LIVE! - making you want to stand up and salute 'em:

That footage has one of my favourite stop-start moments in all of music, at 1:55mins.

An already brilliant performance of The Glory of Man by Minutemen made even better by the bloke sitting on the amplifier at 00.51.

Wow, fantastic! :-) Didn't know they had a stand-in drummer, too.

I'm sure a bunch of folk have seen this already, but this footage of Dylan doing Visions of Johannna from Eat  the Document and No Direction Home is just fucking awe-inspiring. http://youtu.be/IbB9O6fUdKs

Dirty Boy

I think i've posted this before: Fugazi - Glue Man.
The highlight of the Instrument documentary. Go Guy, go!

Heh, the rest of that audience look bored senseless. It's always great to see D Boon do his D Boon dance.

Prime Sly Stone absolutely killing it.

I think this Dick Cavett appearance from '71 is even better. A seven minute version of 'I Want to Take You Higher' that has an incredible finale. No skipping.

This man has some fucking lungs on him, and I want some of whatever the bloke on the tambourines is on.

Frantic.

Dir en grey - Umbrella (live 2014)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn9YsliXqQU [nb]this is the shortened version they uploaded themselves as a promo, the longer version is on YouTube but in bad quality[/nb]

This maybe only makes sense in context.  Basically, Dir en grey is a band which started out as a more or less typical J-Rock act and have since progressed to become one of the most esoteric and instantly-recognisable progressive metal acts in the world.  They're known for being super morbid, dark, angry and all that jazz.  And yet, towards the end of one of their recent big shows at the Budokan, they brought out this goofy number (ostensibly about eating frozen food and fancying girls on TV) from their first album and seem to be having a fucking blast playing it.  The audience, many of whom probably followed them from that first album over 15 years ago, are ecstatic.

I know nobody will really care but I love this performance so much.

I'll say one thing for American hardcore punk audiences of the 1980s - they certainly knew how to enjoy themselves. It 's like watching Minor Threat gigs - the crowds go nuts.

Dexys Midnight Runners (Mk III) perform a 9-minute, half-speed, Celtic Soul version of 'There There My Dear' on The Tube:

The Ramones live on Don Kirshner's Rock concert, 1977

Just over 20 minutes of prime Ramones. I wish the whole thing of this was on that It's Alive 1974-1996 DVD they released years ago. It's still an awesome collection of live footage, though.

His transformation from miserablist singer to cool dude has been a massive boost for his profile. As much as I love his new direction, I still prefer his J Tillman stuff, Vacilando Territory Blues being the best thing he's done.

The Alan Lomax Archive channel on youtube has some absolute gold on. Couple of my faves.

Canray Fontenot - Barres De La Prison, nice Cajun/Lousiana style violin stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as6mxuMNTZ4

R.L. Burnside having a boogie with his family, just lovely footage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0TLP_DCB3I

Boyd Rivers and his wife Ruth May Rivers - Come Out The Wilderness. Actual music starts at around 2:00 but the little bit of chat beforehand is charming as fuck and well worth a watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhF2Vl8Vts0

Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Bongo Beep. New Orleans Mardi Grais funk band in a little bar. Just everything about it is fucking fantastic.

Apologies for spamming links.

Fucking hell, what a find, that's my still hungover Saturday evening sorted.

I know this has already featured on a different thread on here in the past but any excuse to watch this again.

Yeah that whole channel is just full of absolutely amazing recordings. Most of it with hardly any views either. Tis a little treasure.

On another note.

Live performance by Bembeya Jazz National (who are fucking amazing if you're at all into African jazz/funk type stuff). The whole thing is just wonderful on all sorts of levels, the singing, the dancing, the solos. just pure fucking joy. Gets especially good about 5:15.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ganwirqaDc

Sobanza Mimanisa. Fucking mental electrified thumb piano 3 string guitar Congolese "trance" music out of Kinshasa. Just...great really. Off one of the Congotronics comps on crammed discs which are well worth a listen if you like this kind of stuff. Also the dancers :)

Bjork - All is Full of Love

2:31 is the reason why she says she needs a couple days to rest her voice between concerts.

Polyphonic Spree - Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1jFIORBz_w

Not sure if really live (audio goes out of synch at 2:00) but still Polyphonic are always a fun spectacle

I always liked the J Tillman stuff, but it always felt a bit... I dunno. Superficial, maybe. Lyrically, anyway. That new FJM album I think is breathtakingly good - some hacky observations about folk using "literally" wrong aside. In any case, he's brilliant.

On topic, here's a blinding performance of Red Clay Halo by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. The bit where he brings the capo out his pocket and slaps it on without missing a beat at around 01:51 always has me cheering at the screen with the mouths of ten possessed men.

Michael Gira giving an acoustic performance (in a toilet, for some reason), playing one Angels Of Light song (Promise of Water) and one Swans (God Damn The Sun).  He's really hard to beat when it comes to making the most of the most minimal instrumentation/technicality/settings etc.  His acoustic performance in some tiny shit club in Rome was just as imposing as the entire Swans band with all their volume.

Blinder Data

This is an astonishing performance, considering the source material isn't the finest.

Tom Jones dancing like a demon, kissing women in the crowd, having every single person watching it (me included) frothing at the gash.

The squeals at his gyrations, wowzer!

The Fall live on the bbciplayer. Some 6music thing. Someone post a link.

An insufferably beautiful performance of "This Is A Rebel Song" by Sinéad O'Connor. I would marry her off twitter if she'd ask but she never does. She just never does.

https://youtu.be/wbre5Fs9m8I

While we're at it, "Never Get Old" from 1988. Fucking hell. That Almost-Jane's Addiction bit at 03:08... all the piss that's it me spills every direction.

Steve Earle performing Fort Worth Blues at the Townes Van Zandt tribute concert. Nanci Griffith with the eyes running out of her. Earle can't get through the song quick enough.

Just heartbreaking.
